Is It a Jeep or a Speedboat? The WaterCar Panther Explained

WaterCar's Panther was a custom amphibious vehicle with retractable wheels, a V6, and jet propulsion. Here is how it worked, how fast it was, what it cost, and why it is not the same as WaterCar's current EV.

The WaterCar Panther looked like a Jeep, but it was engineered to become a jet-powered boat. Its retractable wheels, fiberglass hull, custom chassis, and rear-mounted Honda/Acura V6 made it a genuine amphibious recreational vehicle—not a conventional Jeep conversion and not merely a floating novelty.

It is both—but the WaterCar Panther is neither a normal Jeep nor an ordinary boat

The WaterCar Panther was a real amphibious recreational vehicle that could drive on land, retract its wheels, and travel across water under jet power. Its appearance suggested a Jeep CJ-8/Scrambler, but it was not simply a Jeep modified with flotation gear. The Panther used a custom chassis, a fiberglass marine hull, retractable wheels, a rear-mounted Honda/Acura V6, and a dedicated Panther Jet propulsion system.

That combination made it one of the most convincing road-and-water vehicles ever produced. On land, published reports put its top speed somewhere around 70–80-plus mph. On water, reported figures ranged from approximately 38 to 44 mph—fast enough, according to period coverage, for recreational activities such as waterskiing. Those are manufacturer or publication-reported figures, not independent tests conducted for this article.

The important distinction for shoppers and enthusiasts is that the Panther is a historical WaterCar model, while the company’s current official materials focus on a different vehicle: the electric WaterCar EV. The newer EV should not be confused with the gasoline-powered Panther.

What was the WaterCar Panther?

WaterCar developed the Panther as a production-oriented amphibious vehicle after its earlier Python project. Founder Dave March’s interest reportedly began with dissatisfaction over the water performance of the Amphicar. The engineering challenge was not merely making a car float. The vehicle had to remain usable as an off-road machine while also developing enough hull performance and propulsion to rise onto plane like a small speedboat.

The result looked familiar from a distance: an open, Jeep-like body with upright proportions and off-road styling. Underneath, however, the architecture was specialized. Reporting from New Atlas described a custom-built production chassis rather than an unmodified Jeep frame. A lightweight chromoly-steel structure was integrated with a fiberglass hull, with flotation material intended to make the vehicle difficult to sink.

In practical terms, the Panther was a compromise in two directions. Wheels, axles, suspension, and ground clearance are essential when driving toward a shoreline, but all of them create drag and complexity in water. A boat hull and jet drive work well afloat, but they make conventional automotive packaging, cooling, steering, and drivetrain design much more difficult. The Panther’s entire identity came from solving that conflict well enough to make both modes credible.

How the Panther worked

A rear-mounted V6 and manual transaxle

Period technical coverage reported a rear-mounted 3.7-liter Acura/Honda V6 producing approximately 305 horsepower. MotorTrend described the use of a Honda/Acura V6 paired with a four-speed Volkswagen Bus manual transaxle. That is an unusual drivetrain for a vehicle that also needs to propel a boat hull, so the Panther required additional hardware to route power between land and water operation.

The water side of the system used a Panther Jet propulsion arrangement. Once the vehicle was afloat, the driver transferred power to the jet drive and raised the wheels out of the water. Removing the wheels was essential: leaving them submerged would add drag and compromise the Panther’s performance as a boat.

Retractable wheels and amphibious steering

The Panther’s wheels were hydraulically retracted for water travel. MotorTrend also reported that the steering and water-propulsion systems were coordinated so steering inputs remained useful in both environments. In other words, the driver did not simply point the front wheels and hope the boat went in the same direction. The vehicle had to provide a meaningful way to control its heading after the road-going hardware was lifted clear of the water.

Cooling a V6 inside a boat-shaped vehicle

Cooling was another problem that a normal SUV does not face. A conventional car can place a radiator at the front behind a grille. The Panther’s hull and amphibious packaging made that arrangement less straightforward. MotorTrend reported side air ducts and fans used to manage engine cooling. This is a small but revealing detail: an amphibious vehicle must adapt nearly every ordinary automotive subsystem to a marine environment.

How it changed from car to boat

The Panther was designed to enter and leave suitable water-access points without always requiring a conventional boat ramp. In the procedure described by New Atlas, the driver approached the water at low speed, placed the transmission in neutral, switched the transfer case to jet drive, hydraulically raised the wheels, and began operating as a boat. The reported transition took less than 15 seconds under the stated conditions.

  1. Approach a suitable shoreline slowly and assess the surface, water depth, and obstacles.
  2. Place the transmission in neutral.
  3. Change the transfer case to jet-drive operation.
  4. Raise the wheels hydraulically.
  5. Apply power and continue as a jet-powered boat once afloat.

This does not mean the Panther could safely launch from every beach. A firm shoreline, a manageable water entry, sufficient depth, limited submerged obstacles, acceptable waves, and local permission were all important. Soft sand, mud, rocks, a sharp drop-off, breaking surf, or hidden debris could turn the Panther’s shore-access ability into a serious recovery problem. “No boat ramp required” is therefore too broad; “engineered to reach suitable shorelines directly” is more accurate.

How fast was the Panther?

Environment Reported performance How to interpret it
Land Approximately 70–80-plus mph Figures varied by source and configuration; they are reported claims, not a fresh independent test.
Water Approximately 38–44 mph, or about 38 knots in one review Roughly the speed of a fast recreational boat, rather than merely a floating car.

New Atlas reported more than 80 mph on land and 44 mph on water. Top Gear described its reviewed example as reaching roughly 70–80 mph on land and up to 38 knots—about 44 mph—on water. The safest summary is that Panther performance depended on the particular vehicle and source, with published figures clustering around those ranges.

The water speed was the more significant achievement. Top Gear said its reviewed Panther was capable of towing a waterskier, while New Atlas described enough performance for waterskiing and wakeboarding. That supports calling the Panther a genuine recreational speedboat as well as an amphibious car. It should not, however, be presented as a verified universal performance specification for every Panther.

What was it like on land?

The Panther’s road behavior was the price of its unusual capability. Its long-travel suspension and rear-wheel-drive layout gave it the ingredients of a recreational off-roader, but it was not designed to be a quiet, comfortable daily SUV. Top Gear’s review criticized its comfort, practicality, noise, fumes, handling, and ease of parking, even while praising its water performance.

That trade-off makes sense. The Panther had to carry a hull, flotation, retractable-wheel mechanisms, jet-drive hardware, marine controls, and a powerful engine while remaining light enough to perform on water. Its appeal was not fuel economy, refinement, cargo space, or effortless urban driving. Its appeal was arriving at a shoreline under its own power, then driving away from the water when the outing was over.

It is best understood as an expensive recreational machine: part off-roader, part speedboat, and part engineering demonstration. Someone seeking a practical daily driver would be better served by an ordinary SUV and a conventional boat. Someone valuing the experience of owning one machine that can do both would find the Panther’s compromises more understandable.

How much did a WaterCar Panther cost?

There was no single universal Panther price. Configuration, build level, year, and market mattered substantially.

The $465,000 H1-Panther figure requires particular caution. A purchase-agreement PDF demonstrates that a commercial agreement referenced that amount, but it does not prove that standard Panther production was active, that inventory was available, or that the figure represented a current public price. It should not be used as a simple answer to “how much does a Panther cost?”

Can you buy a new WaterCar Panther today?

Do not assume that you can order a new, standard gasoline-powered Panther simply because older reviews and WaterCar history pages still exist. The current WaterCar website and specification materials emphasized the newer WaterCar EV, and the available research does not establish current Panther production, inventory, delivery timing, or a standard Panther sales program.

If you are pursuing one, the responsible next step is to contact WaterCar about current amphibious-vehicle availability and ask specifically about Panther production status, parts support, documentation, registration, and whether any vehicle offered is new, completed, used, or a custom build. Do not interpret a historical Panther page or a purchase-agreement reference as confirmation that a vehicle is currently available.

Do not confuse the Panther with the current WaterCar EV

WaterCar’s current official materials focus on an electric amphibious design, not the gasoline Panther described in the older automotive reports. The current WaterCar EV is specified with electric road propulsion and a 115-hp Mercury Pro XS outboard for water travel. The published specifications list up to 25 mph on land, up to 35 mph on water, a hull in the 19-foot class, seating for four, and a starting price of $170,000 on the main site.

Ownership means treating it as a boat and a motor vehicle

A Panther’s ability to drive on water does not remove ordinary boating responsibilities. Before operating one, an owner should verify the rules that apply in the relevant country, state, or province, including registration, launch permissions, operator requirements, navigation rules, and required safety equipment. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and can depend on whether the vehicle is being operated on roads, navigable waters, or both.

WaterCar’s current EV materials emphasize the kinds of marine systems owners need to consider, including flotation, bilge equipment, capacity information, navigation equipment, and fire extinguishers. Those current-EV details should not automatically be treated as Panther specifications. They are, however, a useful reminder that an older Panther needs vehicle-specific documentation and a proper marine-safety inspection.

For general preparation, a properly rated boat safety equipment checklist is more relevant than ordinary automotive accessories. That is a category-level recommendation only: a specific PFD, extinguisher, bilge component, or navigation device still needs to meet the applicable rules and fit the particular vehicle.

So, is it a Jeep or a speedboat?

The most accurate answer is “both, within limits.” The Panther borrowed the visual language and recreational purpose of a Jeep-like off-roader, but its custom chassis and fiberglass hull made it a specialized amphibious vehicle rather than a conventional Jeep conversion. Once its wheels were raised and the Panther Jet engaged, its reported water performance put it much closer to a genuine recreational speedboat than to a slow floating automobile.

Its limitations are equally important. It was noisy, expensive, awkward, and impractical compared with separate land and water vehicles. Its impressive speed figures come from period reports and manufacturer claims rather than a current independent test. Its direct-to-shore capability depended on the shoreline and conditions. And its historical presence on WaterCar’s website does not establish that a new Panther can be ordered today.

That combination is exactly why the Panther remains memorable. It did not make the compromises disappear; it engineered enough solutions around them to create a machine that could leave the road, become a jet boat in seconds, and return to land under its own power.

A note on equipment recommendations

No verified Panther-specific manual, parts catalog, Amazon product, or exact accessory listing was established in the supplied research. Owners should therefore buy safety equipment only after checking local marine rules, the vehicle’s documentation, and the product’s specifications. A generic “Panther” search result may refer to an unrelated product and is not evidence of compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was the WaterCar Panther built from a Jeep?

The Panther was not a conventional Jeep conversion. Reports described a custom-built chromoly-steel chassis integrated with a fiberglass hull, plus retractable wheels and a dedicated jet-drive system.

How fast could the WaterCar Panther go?

Published reports put land speed at roughly 70–80-plus mph and water speed at approximately 38–44 mph, depending on the source and vehicle configuration. These are reported claims, not independent test results from this article.

Can you still buy a new WaterCar Panther?

The supplied research does not establish that a standard new Panther is currently in production or available. WaterCar’s current official materials focus on the different, electric WaterCar EV.

Could the Panther launch from any beach?

Not necessarily. The Panther was designed for suitable firm shorelines, but surface firmness, water depth, waves, submerged obstacles, vehicle condition, and local rules all determine whether a launch is safe and legal.

The Bottom Line

The WaterCar Panther was a custom-built amphibious recreational vehicle that combined a Jeep-like off-road layout with a fiberglass hull, retractable wheels, a Honda/Acura V6, and jet propulsion. Reported figures put it at roughly 70–80-plus mph on land and about 38–44 mph on water, but those numbers were not independently tested for this article. It was a remarkable speedboat-capable machine, not a practical SUV—and it should not be confused with WaterCar’s current electric amphibious vehicle or assumed to be in current Panther production.
