The current all-electric F-150 Lightning has finished production, but Ford says the Lightning name will return on a planned extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). That makes the current battery-electric model a casualty of Ford’s December 2025 EV reset—not necessarily the Lightning nameplate. Ford has not announced when the successor will be available.
Is Ford discontinuing or cancelling the F-150 Lightning?
Ford ended production of the current, all-electric generation and says it is no longer available to order in its current form. Ford’s current F-150 Lightning page describes the vehicle as being transformed as part of its Universal Electric Vehicle platform. In other words, the existing battery-electric version has concluded its production run, while Ford plans to continue the Lightning as a different kind of vehicle.
Calling the Lightning a “casualty” is accurate if it refers to the current product and production run. It is misleading if it suggests Ford has announced the permanent end of the Lightning name: Ford says a next-generation Lightning is planned.
What will replace the all-electric Lightning?
Ford announced on December 15, 2025, that the next-generation Lightning would use extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) architecture. Ford describes the planned truck as delivering electric power with a generator to extend its range. That is distinct from the current Lightning, which is a battery-electric vehicle.

Ford has cited estimated range exceeding 700 miles and acceleration from zero to 60 mph in under five seconds for the planned EREV. Those are Ford’s estimates and claims about a future vehicle, not independently verified results or confirmed production specifications. Ford has not established the successor’s final specifications or price.
When will the new F-150 Lightning come out?
Ford has not announced a specific availability date for the EREV Lightning. Its December 2025 announcement said the planned truck would be assembled at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan, but a plant plan is not a confirmed launch date. The 2027 start Ford discussed for a separate midsize electric pickup on its Universal EV Platform does not establish when the Lightning successor will arrive.

What Ford’s EV reset changes
The Lightning shift is part of a broader change in Ford’s planned vehicle mix. In its December 2025 announcement, Ford said it expected hybrids, EREVs and fully electric vehicles to make up about 50% of global volume by 2030, compared with 17% in 2025. These are company expectations, not achieved results.
Ford also said it planned a lower-cost Universal EV Platform, starting with a midsize electric pickup planned for assembly in Louisville beginning in 2027. The company described redirecting its Tennessee EV plant toward affordable gasoline trucks and replacing a planned North American electric commercial van with gas and hybrid models. Those decisions show the scope of the reset, but none provides a confirmed date or final specifications for the next Lightning.

What Ford has said the reset will cost
Ford’s December 2025 announcement estimated about $19.5 billion in special items, most expected to be recorded in the fourth quarter of 2025, with the remainder in 2026 and 2027. Ford also estimated about $5.5 billion in cash effects associated with those announced items. These are company-reported figures and accounting estimates tied to the broader strategic actions, not a stated cost solely for ending Lightning production. Ford’s December 2025 announcement filed with the SEC provides the original context.
In its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Ford reported $481 million in cash-payable charges during the second quarter, primarily related to contractual commitments from EV programs. It said further related expenses and cash expenditures could be up to $2 billion pre-tax. The filing also discusses the May 2026 closing of BlueOval SK joint-venture disposition transactions and associated battery-plant arrangements; those transactions should not be confused with costs specifically attributed to Lightning production ending. Ford’s June 2026 Form 10-Q gives the accounting details.

Will Ford still support current Lightning owners?
Ford says existing-owner support remains unchanged. Its current owner information says software updates and connected services will continue and replacement parts will remain available. For high-voltage battery components, Ford lists coverage of eight years or 100,000 miles and describes a 70% capacity threshold during the applicable warranty period. Coverage conditions and other warranty terms depend on the vehicle’s model year, warranty guide and jurisdiction; owners should consult the guide for their vehicle and confirm details with a Ford dealer. Ford’s Lightning page and owner information also list separate powertrain and bumper-to-bumper terms.

For a used battery-electric Lightning, charging access and the kind of towing you actually do are central to the decision. If you need a truck soon, compare available gas and hybrid F-150s with used Lightning listings rather than treating the planned EREV as an imminent replacement. Local prices, incentives and inventory vary, and the sources cited here do not establish a current purchase price for any of these paths.
