Tesla’s European registrations fell sharply in April 2025 even as electric-car registrations rose, and reporting identified backlash to Elon Musk’s politics as one possible contributor. The figures show a real downturn; they do not prove that Musk’s support for Donald Trump caused it or measure how much politics influenced buyers.
What happened to Tesla’s European registrations?
In April 2025, Tesla registrations fell 49% year over year to 7,261 across 32 European countries, according to the Associated Press. Across those same countries and that month, battery-electric registrations rose about 28%. That contrast makes a shrinking electric-car market an incomplete explanation for Tesla’s April drop.
The geography matters: the AP figure covers 32 European countries, not just the European Union. It should not be combined with EU-only figures as though both described an identical market.
Does the data show that Trump-related backlash caused the decline?
No. Registration totals count vehicles registered, not why customers chose or avoided a brand. The AP reported political backlash over Musk’s politics as a likely explanation facing Tesla, but the data do not establish a boycott or quantify the effect of Musk’s alignment with Donald Trump.

Political backlash is one plausible contributor, not a demonstrated sole cause. Reporting also pointed to intensifying competition. Reuters, via Investing.com, reported that Volkswagen overtook Tesla in European fully electric vehicle sales in 2025, citing JATO Dynamics. The cited coverage does not measure the relative impact of political sentiment, competition, or other business conditions.
How does Tesla’s performance compare with the wider car and EV market?
EU-wide market figures provide useful context, but they measure a different geography and period from the AP’s April comparison.

The August 2026 figures show growth in the broader EU market and a larger battery-electric share; they do not show whether Tesla itself recovered.
