No: Tesla’s current Cybertruck manual describes slow, shallow-water wading—not floating or travelling under power as a boat. Elon Musk said in September 2022 that the truck would be “waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat,” but that statement is not a published operating specification or a test result. Tesla’s manual gives an approximate maximum wade depth of 32 inches (815 mm), measured from the bottom of the tire, and warns that soft or muddy ground can make the truck sink in.
What Musk said—and what it establishes
On September 29, 2022, TechCrunch reported Musk’s statement: “Cybertruck will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes & even seas that aren’t too choppy.” He also wrote, “Needs be able to get from Starbase to South Padre Island, which requires crossing the channel.” TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report attributes those remarks to Musk; they do not specify a duration, operating method, or tested production configuration.
The distinction matters: a claim that a vehicle might briefly act as a boat is not the same as manufacturer guidance authorizing flotation or powered travel while afloat. The sources cited here do not establish that a production Cybertruck can safely float and propel itself as a boat.
What Tesla’s manual actually allows
Tesla’s current U.S. Cybertruck Owner’s Manual describes Wade Mode for entering and driving through water such as rivers or creeks. It gives an approximate maximum wade depth of 32 inches (815 mm), measured from the bottom of the tire, and recommends moving slowly at 1–3 mph (2–5 km/h). The manual says Wade Mode sets ride height to Very High and that the high-voltage battery automatically pressurizes to help protect it from water and debris. It does not describe the Cybertruck as a boat or specify operation while afloat. Tesla Cybertruck Owner’s Manual
#1 Best Overall
The manual limits Wade Mode to 30 minutes. These are manufacturer instructions, not independent test results or a guarantee that a particular crossing is safe. The approximate depth is not a universal safe-water threshold: the driver is responsible for judging the site and its conditions.
Why a crossing can still go wrong
Tesla instructs drivers to gauge depth and inspect underwater conditions, including debris. If the water is too deep, the manual says to return to shallower water or dry land. It warns against deep, fast-flowing water and against crossing beside or immediately after another vehicle, since the resulting currents can damage the Cybertruck.

Soft or muddy underwater surfaces create a separate risk: the truck can sink into the bottom, effectively raising the water level around the vehicle. That warning explains the “until it sinks” hazard in practical wading terms; it does not document a boat test or establish a particular real-world sinking incident. The manual also warns drivers never to stop or shift into Park while crossing.

Tesla says the driver is responsible for assessing water depth before entering, and that water ingress or damage caused by driving in water is not covered by warranty. Its guidance for a submerged vehicle—especially one submerged in salt water—is to treat it as if it had been in an accident; Tesla also states that water damage is not covered.
