Is a Used Porsche 718 a Good Buy for a Gas-Powered Sports Car?

A used Porsche 718 suits buyers who want a focused gasoline sports car and can afford premium upkeep. Learn how to choose Cayman or Boxster, verify recalls and warranty coverage, and inspect the individual car before buying.

Yes—if you want a focused, two-seat gasoline sports car and can budget for premium maintenance. A used Porsche 718 gives you a choice between the Cayman coupe and Boxster convertible, manual or automatic transmissions, and a wide performance range. It is not the right answer for low running costs, rear-seat practicality, or a guaranteed reliability record. The individual car’s service history, accident record, inspection results, recall status, equipment and remaining warranty matter more than the badge or trim name.

What you are buying: Cayman or Boxster

The 718 name covers two body styles built around the same mid-engine, two-seat sports-car concept:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Model Body style Best fit What to verify
Cayman Fixed-roof coupe Drivers who prefer a rigid roof, enclosed cabin and year-round sports-car use Exact engine, transmission, options, mileage, service history and evidence of track or heavy-use driving
Boxster Convertible Drivers who will regularly use open-air driving and accept additional roof mechanisms to inspect Roof operation and condition, water leaks, seals, storage-area condition, plus the same mechanical and history checks as a Cayman

Neither body style is automatically the better buy. A well-documented Boxster is preferable to a neglected Cayman, and vice versa. Decide whether you genuinely want a convertible before comparing colors or option packages; the roof is the most visible difference in everyday use, while the condition of the specific vehicle determines the financial risk.

Engine and performance choices

Porsche’s U.S. model information lists gasoline 718 variants including the base car and GTS 4.0, along with S and other performance versions. Output, engine configuration, equipment and availability vary by model year and trim, so identify the exact build rather than assuming every 718 drives the same way.

2025 GTS 4.0 394 hp Specification published by Porsche Cars North America; confirm the model year and equipment of the used car you are considering
S and other 718 versions Not stated in the supplied official material Check the vehicle’s VIN, factory build information and registration details for the exact engine and output

The practical buying question is not simply “How much horsepower can I get?” It is whether the engine, gearbox, tires, brakes and options match how you will drive. A lower-output car with a manual transmission and a clear maintenance file may be a better ownership proposition than a higher-output example with unknown use. Conversely, a buyer specifically seeking the character of a 4.0-liter GTS should not treat a base Cayman as an equivalent substitute.

Manual versus automatic

Porsche model pages list both manual and automatic availability across the range. Confirm the actual transmission in the listing and VIN records; trim names alone do not establish it. During a test drive, check cold and warm operation, clutch take-up or shift quality, reverse engagement, warning messages and any signs that the car has been modified for track use. Ask whether scheduled transmission service was completed at the required interval for that model year.

Is a used 718 reliable?

There is no verified, representative long-term reliability statistic for the used 718 range in the available official material. That means a responsible answer cannot assign the model a blanket reliability rating or promise that ownership will be trouble-free. One safety recall demonstrates a specific issue affecting a defined group of cars; it does not measure the reliability of every Cayman and Boxster.

For a used 718, reliability is best judged as a vehicle-by-vehicle probability assessment. Favor cars with complete invoices, consistent mileage records, factory or specialist servicing, no unexplained warning lights and an independent inspection. Treat missing records, multiple owners with no documentation, accident repairs, extensive modifications and evidence of repeated track use as reasons to demand a lower price—or to walk away.

Recall checks you must complete

Use the 17-character VIN

Porsche USA’s VIN lookup checks applicable recall information for the actual vehicle. Enter the 17-character VIN rather than relying on the model year. A campaign may apply only to certain production batches, and a listed campaign may already have been completed.

  1. Obtain the VIN from the car, registration and seller’s paperwork; make sure all three agree.
  2. Run it through Porsche USA’s recall lookup before committing money.
  3. Ask the seller for repair documentation showing whether each campaign was completed.
  4. Have the inspection report note open campaigns, completed remedies and any mismatch between the VIN and paperwork.

What happened with recall 21V-200

NHTSA recall 21V-200, dated March 29, 2021, covered certain 2021 Porsche 718 Spyder, Cayman GT4, Boxster GTS 4.0 and Cayman GTS 4.0 vehicles. NHTSA reported that connecting rods could crack or loosen, potentially causing engine damage, stalling, an oil leak and crash or fire risk. The remedy was replacement of connecting rods or, when necessary, the engine, at no charge. The notice identified 190 potentially affected vehicles.

This recall is limited to affected VINs. Do not infer that every 2021 4.0-liter car—or every 718—has the problem. Verify the individual VIN and obtain proof of the remedy. If the seller cannot show completion, pause the purchase and ask Porsche or an authorized repair facility how the open campaign will be handled before driving the car away.

What to inspect before purchase

A specialist pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is prudent for any used 718, especially when the seller is private or the car has performance options. Request a written report with photographs, fault-code results and measured wear rather than a verbal “looks good.”

Documents and identity

  • Match the VIN on the dashboard, door label, title and service invoices.
  • Review maintenance invoices in date and mileage order; gaps should be explained.
  • Check title status, accident reports and evidence of structural repair.
  • Ask for both keys, owner manuals, wheel-lock keys and records for aftermarket parts.
  • Confirm whether the car was used for track days, driver training, competition or long-term storage.

Mechanical and electronic checks

  • Scan all control modules for stored or pending fault codes, not just the dashboard for active warnings.
  • Inspect for oil or coolant leaks, damaged undertrays, corrosion and signs of previous impact.
  • Evaluate cold start, idle quality, exhaust smoke, operating temperature and restart when hot.
  • Check clutch engagement and gearbox operation through every gear, including reverse.
  • Test steering, suspension, brakes, parking brake, air conditioning, infotainment, windows and convertible-roof operation on a Boxster.
  • Measure tire tread and inspect age, matching brands, uneven wear and sidewall damage.
  • Assess brake-disc condition, pad thickness and any vibration or pulling under braking.

Why tires and brakes deserve special attention

Performance tires and brake components can be expensive consumables. Uneven tire wear may indicate alignment, suspension or accident problems; very old tires can be unsafe even with good tread. A PPI should record measured tread depth, disc condition and pad thickness so you can budget for work immediately rather than treating an apparent bargain as a finished purchase.

How to compare two used 718s

Put both cars on the same checklist. The lower odometer reading is not automatically the safer choice if its service history is incomplete.

Decision area Questions to ask Preferred evidence
Body style Will you use a roofless car often enough to justify it? Working roof, healthy seals and no water intrusion for a Boxster; straight body and clean glass for either car
Engine and trim Does the output and character fit your roads and budget? VIN/build data and original sales documents
Transmission Do you want manual involvement or automatic convenience? Correct transmission operation on a cold and warm test drive
Equipment Are the options important enough to affect price or future repairs? Factory option list, not a seller’s shorthand description
Use and mileage Was the car a commuter, weekend car or track vehicle? Service timeline, tire records, alignment history and inspection findings
Condition What will need replacement soon? Independent written PPI with measurements and photographs
Protection What happens after the sale if a major fault appears? Remaining factory or CPO warranty in writing

Warranty and Porsche Approved CPO

Porsche USA states that a new vehicle has a four-year/50,000-mile warranty. The limit is four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, and these are U.S. terms. Confirm the original in-service date, mileage and exclusions for the specific car and market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Porsche USA also describes a Porsche Approved certified-pre-owned limited warranty lasting two years with unlimited mileage after the new-vehicle warranty expires by months or miles, whichever comes first. CPO vehicles must meet Porsche quality standards and receive a multipoint inspection; Porsche lists warranty and roadside-assistance benefits. The exact contract, start date, deductible, exclusions and geographic coverage should be read before purchase because terms can change by country and vehicle.

When CPO may justify its premium

  • You want a documented inspection and a manufacturer-backed warranty rather than relying solely on a private seller’s assurances.
  • The car is close to the end of its original coverage and the CPO term materially reduces your exposure to unexpected repairs.
  • You value roadside assistance and a standardized handover process.

CPO is not proof that a car has never been tracked, modified or damaged. Read the inspection report and contract, and still verify the VIN recall status.

Ownership costs and practical trade-offs

There is no fixed, market-wide used-718 price or typical repair-cost figure established here. Asking prices change by country, mileage, trim, options, season and listing. Use Porsche’s U.S. used-car finder to see current examples and filter by year, mileage, transmission, options and campaigns; treat each listing as a starting point, not a price guide.

Budget beyond the purchase price for premium-car labor, scheduled servicing, tires, brakes, insurance, registration, storage and unexpected repairs. A pre-purchase inspection is usually cheaper than discovering deferred maintenance after closing. Obtain written estimates for any near-term work identified by the inspector and include them in your purchase decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 718’s compromises are deliberate: two seats, limited luggage space compared with a conventional car, low ground clearance and a performance-focused ride. Those are acceptable if the car is a second vehicle or a lifestyle purchase; they are frustrating if it must handle family transport, bulky cargo or inexpensive daily commuting.

A safe buying process

  1. Define the use case. Choose Cayman or Boxster, manual or automatic, and the performance level before shopping.
  2. Shortlist documented cars. Request the VIN, title status, maintenance file, ownership history and modification list.
  3. Run the VIN recall check. Resolve any open campaign before purchase.
  4. Compare like with like. Adjust for trim, options, tires, brakes, mileage, accident history and warranty—not just the advertised price.
  5. Arrange an independent Porsche-specialist PPI. Ask for a written report and fault-code scan; do not use the seller’s inspection as your only evidence.
  6. Price the immediate work. Include tires, brakes, fluids, leaks, alignment, roof repairs or missing equipment identified by the PPI.
  7. Verify the contract. For CPO, read the warranty and roadside-assistance terms. For a private sale, document what is included and whether any warranty exists.
  8. Walk away when evidence does not add up. An unusually low price cannot compensate for an unclear VIN, unresolved recall, structural damage or a seller unwilling to permit inspection.

Who should buy a used Porsche 718?

It makes sense when you want

  • A gasoline-powered, two-seat sports car rather than a practical hatchback or sedan.
  • A choice of fixed-roof Cayman or open-top Boxster.
  • Multiple engine and transmission personalities, including a 300-hp 2025 base Cayman and 394-hp 2025 GTS 4.0 as published Porsche specifications.
  • A car you are prepared to maintain to premium-vehicle standards.
  • To evaluate condition and documentation carefully instead of relying on model reputation.

Choose something else when you need

  • Rear seats, substantial cargo capacity or low-cost routine ownership.
  • A predictable reliability score that applies equally to every used example.
  • To skip an inspection, records review or VIN campaign check.
  • A single trim whose equipment and engine are identical across all model years.

Bottom line

A used Porsche 718 can be a very good buy for the right sports-car buyer: it offers gasoline power, two-seat focus, Cayman-versus-Boxster choice and a broad range of engines and transmissions. Buy the specific car, not the reputation. Require a matching VIN, documented maintenance, clean title and accident history, a Porsche-specialist inspection, confirmed recall completion and a clear warranty decision. If the evidence is incomplete or the expected upkeep does not fit your budget, the correct answer is to keep shopping rather than assume the badge guarantees reliability.
