Is a Used Nissan Altima a Good Buy? Common Problems and What to Check

A used Nissan Altima can be a good buy when its VIN, maintenance, CVT behavior, title history and independent inspection all check out. Here is exactly what to verify.

By CarCody Team

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A used Nissan Altima can be a good buy if the specific car has verifiable maintenance, a clean VIN history, a sound independent inspection and a price that reflects its condition. The main issue requiring extra scrutiny is the continuously variable transmission (CVT). Nissan has published CVT maintenance guidance and warranty actions for certain years, but those actions do not prove that every Altima will fail or provide a reliable failure-rate ranking by model year.

Evaluate the individual Altima—not just the badge—by checking its VIN, service records, transmission behavior, accident history, remaining coverage and inspection results.

What makes a used Altima a good or bad buy?

The Altima is worth considering when the ownership record is clear and the car passes a professional inspection. A low asking price does not compensate for undocumented maintenance, severe accident repairs or transmission symptoms. Conversely, a higher-mileage example with consistent invoices, careful previous ownership and a clean inspection may be a better purchase than a newer car with missing records.

When an Altima is a sensible purchase

  • The seller provides the VIN and allows you to verify recalls and warranty status.
  • Maintenance and repair invoices match the vehicle’s model year, engine and mileage.
  • The CVT engages smoothly when cold and warm, with no shudder, delay, unusual noise, leak or warning light.
  • An independent mechanic finds no significant problems with the drivetrain, suspension, brakes, tires, electronics or body repairs.
  • The title and accident history are consistent with the seller’s description.
  • The price reflects the inspection findings and any remaining factory or certified coverage.

When to walk away or renegotiate

  • The seller will not provide the VIN or refuses an independent inspection.
  • There are unexplained transmission symptoms, active warning lights, fluid leaks or stored diagnostic codes.
  • Service records are absent where major maintenance should have occurred.
  • The car has severe structural damage, an inconsistent odometer or a title problem.
  • The seller treats a warranty extension, settlement notice or “certified” label as proof that the car is trouble-free without supplying written terms.

Which Altima years have documented CVT concerns?

Official records document two different CVT-related matters, and they should not be turned into a blanket ranking of “good” and “bad” years.

2013–2016 Altima: historical settlement allegations

A Nissan notice concerning 2013–2016 Altimas described allegations about CVT performance or failure. Nissan denied the allegations, and the notice stated that the settlement was not an admission of wrongdoing. The notice also described historical reimbursement rules and deadlines; those deadlines have passed. It is therefore evidence that CVT complaints were litigated, not evidence that every car from these years has a failed transmission or that a current buyer is automatically entitled to reimbursement.

2017–2018 Altima: warranty extension

Nissan’s November 2, 2023 bulletin states that CVT coverage for specified 2017–2018 Altimas was extended from 60 months or 60,000 miles to 84 months or 84,000 miles, whichever came first. Dealers were instructed to verify eligibility by vehicle identification number. The bulletin also notes that some owners may have opted out of the settlement associated with the action.

This extension is not a safety recall. It does not show that an individual used Altima is covered today: the time and mileage limits may have expired, and eligibility depends on the exact VIN and written program terms. Ask Nissan or a dealer to check the VIN rather than relying on the model year alone.

What the evidence does not establish

The available official material does not provide a defensible, comparable failure-rate table for every Altima model year. Avoid claims that all Altimas are bad, that one year is failure-proof or that a particular percentage of transmissions will fail. The documented actions justify a careful inspection and record check, not a numerical prediction.

How to check a used Altima before buying

  1. Get the VIN before visiting. Use the 17-character VIN from the dashboard, driver’s door label or registration. Do not accept a stock number or partial VIN as a substitute.
  2. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. NHTSA distinguishes an individual vehicle’s open-recall result from general year/make/model information. A model-level search that shows no campaign does not prove that a particular car’s recalls are complete. Save the result and ask for repair documentation for any open campaign.
  3. Request the complete service file. Look for dated invoices, mileage, parts used and the repair facility’s identity. Pay special attention to CVT-fluid inspection or replacement when the applicable schedule calls for it. A seller’s verbal statement that the fluid was “changed” is weaker than an invoice identifying the service.
  4. Confirm warranty or extension status by VIN. Ask Nissan or an authorized dealer to check remaining time, mileage, exclusions and transfer rules. Confirm whether a claimed certified status is genuine and which written warranty applies.
  5. Inspect the car before starting it. A cold start can reveal noises, delayed engagement, warning lights or leaks that may disappear after the engine warms. Ask the seller not to warm the car before you arrive.
  6. Test-drive it cold and fully warm. Use local streets and a highway if possible. Select Drive and Reverse several times, accelerate gently and firmly, coast, climb a hill and make stop-and-go transitions. Note delayed engagement, shuddering, hesitation, surging, unusual whining or a transmission warning. These symptoms require diagnosis; they are not, by themselves, proof of a specific internal failure.
  7. Have a qualified independent mechanic inspect the whole vehicle. Request a written report covering the CVT and engine, leaks, stored diagnostic codes, tires, brakes, suspension, steering, body and frame repairs, air-conditioning, safety systems, windows, locks and other electronics.
  8. Use an OBD-II scanner only as a supplement. It can reveal some stored codes, but it cannot certify CVT health, detect every mechanical problem or prove that codes were not recently cleared. It does not replace a professional inspection.
  9. Reconcile the findings with the price. Include immediate repairs, deferred maintenance, tires, brakes, accident history, title status, equipment and remaining coverage when comparing cars.

How to tell whether an Altima CVT may be going bad

A CVT normally changes engine speed continuously rather than shifting through fixed gears. During a drive, focus on behavior that is repeatable in both cold and warm conditions.

Symptoms that deserve diagnosis

  • A noticeable delay when selecting Drive or Reverse.
  • Shuddering or vibration during takeoff or light acceleration.
  • Hesitation, surging or an inability to maintain speed normally.
  • Unusual whining, grinding or other drivetrain noise.
  • Transmission, check-engine or other warning lights.
  • Visible fluid leakage or a burning smell after driving.
  • Stored transmission-related codes found during a diagnostic scan.

None of these symptoms identifies the failed part on its own. A specialist should confirm the cause, estimate repair needs and determine whether the car is safe and economical to buy. A smooth test drive is encouraging but cannot guarantee future reliability.

CVT-fluid maintenance by engine

Nissan’s 2024 Altima maintenance guide gives different intervals for the two listed engines. Apply these figures only when they match the vehicle’s engine and model-year documentation; older schedules can differ. Nissan says the Owner’s Manual or Service Maintenance Guide is the controlling source and that a dealer can confirm the schedule.

Engine CVT-fluid inspection CVT-fluid replacement
2.5L four-cylinder Every 10,000 miles or 12 months Every 60,000 miles or 72 months
2.0L turbo Every 7,500 miles or 12 months Every 60,000 miles or 96 months

Nissan’s maintenance page explains: “Over time, heat and contaminants can cause CVT fluid to lose the necessary properties.” Ask for evidence that inspections and replacements were performed at the interval applicable to that specific car, and ask the mechanic to check for leaks. Do not assume that a fluid change cures shuddering or other symptoms; diagnosis comes first.

Comparing two used Altimas—or an Altima with another car

Compare candidates on identical criteria. A newer model year is not automatically the better purchase if its records are incomplete or its inspection reveals expensive repairs.

What Nissan certified used coverage means

Nissan describes two certified categories, but the listing’s written terms and eligibility must be verified before purchase.

Program Published inspection Published limited warranty
Nissan Certified 167-point inspection 7 years or 100,000 miles
Certified Select 84-point inspection 12 months or 12,000 miles

Nissan also sets age and mileage eligibility limits. Ask to see the program category, inspection report, in-service date, mileage limits, exclusions, deductible and transfer provisions. A dealer’s use of the word “certified” without those documents is not enough to evaluate coverage.

Checking only a generic recall page

Fix: run the individual VIN through NHTSA and obtain proof that open recalls were repaired.

Assuming a clean scan proves a healthy CVT

Fix: combine a scan with cold and warm driving, a leak check and an independent mechanical inspection.

Accepting “fresh fluid” without documentation

Fix: request an invoice and compare the service date and mileage with the correct engine-specific schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skipping the inspection because the car drives well

Fix: remember that a road test is a screening step, not a guarantee against future problems. Have the whole vehicle inspected before money changes hands.

Bottom-line buying decision

Buy a used Nissan Altima when the individual car earns confidence through documentation and inspection—not because a particular year is labeled safe or unsafe online. Give the CVT extra attention, verify recall and warranty status by VIN, match fluid service to the engine-specific schedule and price the car according to its actual condition. If the seller withholds the VIN, records or an independent inspection, the risk is high enough to choose another example.
