Is a Used Midsize Pickup Truck Practical as a Daily Driver?

A used midsize pickup is practical when its bed or towing utility justifies the trade-offs in fuel, parking, comfort and maintenance. Learn how to evaluate the exact truck.

Yes—if you regularly use the bed, towing hardware, or truck-specific ground clearance, a used midsize pickup can be a sensible daily driver. The trade is that fuel use, parking dimensions, ride comfort, rear-seat space, and ownership costs vary sharply by year, cab, bed, engine, drivetrain, tires, suspension, trim, and condition.

Judge the exact truck against your commute, parking space, passengers, cargo, and trailer—not against the word “midsize.”

Start with the job the truck must do

A pickup earns its daily-driver compromises when its utility is part of your normal routine. That might mean carrying dirty or oversize items that you do not want inside an SUV, towing a small boat or utility trailer, hauling landscaping supplies, or needing an open bed several times a month. If those needs are occasional, compare the truck’s ongoing costs and parking burden with renting a vehicle for the rare job.

Write down a typical week before shopping:

  • How many people ride, and how often do adults use the second row?
  • What is the longest item you carry, and does it need to stay dry or locked?
  • What is the loaded trailer weight, including cargo, rather than the trailer’s empty weight?
  • Where will the truck park at home, work, and regular destinations?
  • How much of your driving is stop-and-go city traffic, highway commuting, or unpaved roads?

This list prevents a common mistake: buying for a maximum towing number or an appealing bed length while overlooking the daily tasks that determine whether the truck is pleasant to live with.

Fuel and running costs depend on the exact configuration

There is no single “midsize-truck mpg” figure. Engine, transmission, two- or four-wheel drive, cab, bed, tires, payload, weather, and traffic all change consumption. Use the precise model year and configuration in the EPA’s FuelEconomy.gov database, then estimate fuel from your own commute. The rating is a comparison tool, not a promise of real-world results.

A manufacturer’s 2023 comparison illustrates the spread. These are EPA-estimated ratings for the configurations shown on that specific page, not universal figures for every used truck:

Vehicle and configuration shown by Toyota City mpg Highway mpg Combined mpg
2023 Ford Ranger, rear-wheel drive 20 26 22
2023 Toyota Tacoma, 2.7-liter engine, rear-wheel drive 20 23 21

Source: Toyota’s 2023 Tacoma-versus-Ranger comparison. Four-wheel drive and other engines on that page receive different ratings, and later model years can differ again.

Budget more than gasoline. The Federal Trade Commission advises including registration, insurance, fuel, maintenance, and repairs when evaluating a used vehicle. A truck with aggressive all-terrain tires, a lift, or a history of towing may also bring faster wear on brakes, suspension, steering components, and tires. Ask an insurer for a quote on the exact vehicle identification number and trim before you buy.

Are midsize trucks hard to park?

“Midsize” does not guarantee car-like maneuverability. Overall length, width, wheelbase, turning behavior, hood height, blind spots, and camera or sensor equipment vary by configuration. Measure the actual parking space—including door clearance and the path into it—then compare those measurements with the candidate’s specifications.

Toyota’s 2023 comparison lists a Tacoma at up to 212.3 inches with the standard bed and up to 225.5 inches with the long bed. Cab and bed choices account for meaningful differences in tight garages and crowded lots. The same comparison also lists different configurations for the Tacoma and Ranger, so do not use a short-bed dimension to judge a long-bed truck.

During a test drive, recreate your routine rather than circling a dealership block:

  1. Drive into your home garage or assigned space and open the doors where you normally would.
  2. Try a tight turn, a reverse maneuver, and a parallel- or angled-parking approach.
  3. Check the view over the shoulder and through the mirrors with the driver’s seat in your normal position.
  4. Test the backup camera and parking sensors in low light and in a space with pedestrians or parked cars nearby.

A truck that technically fits may still be tiring if every parking maneuver requires multiple corrections.

Cabin comfort and passenger space can decide the answer

Spend enough time in the driver’s seat to expose problems that a short test drive hides. Check thigh support, steering-wheel adjustment, seat-belt position, road and tire noise, ride over broken pavement, heating and air-conditioning controls, and whether the infotainment system is usable without taking your eyes off the road.

Bring the people who will actually ride in it. Have rear-seat passengers sit behind the driver’s normal position, check legroom and headroom, and try installing the child seats or boosters you use. Some crew-cab trucks provide useful occasional seating but are less comfortable for adults on long trips. A rear seat that works for short errands may be a poor choice for a daily family commute.

The Honda Ridgeline is a useful example of why model-specific evaluation matters. An Edmunds used-truck guide covering 2017–2022 models describes the Ridgeline as having car-like ride quality and gives it a maximum tow rating of 5,000 pounds. That is a source’s description of that model period, not a guarantee that every Ridgeline or every driver will prefer its ride. Read the full used-truck discussion at Edmunds via AP, then drive the exact example you are considering.

Bed, payload, and towing: verify the truck you are buying

Bed utility is more than length. Check usable floor length with the tailgate closed and open, wheel-well intrusion, tie-down locations, tailgate height, and whether your cargo needs protection from weather or theft. A tonneau cover can make covered bed cargo easier, but fit is specific to the truck’s model year, bed length, cab, and mounting system. Toyota lists tonneau covers as available for the Tacoma and Ranger in its 2023 comparison; that does not establish universal fit or endorse a particular product.

Payload is the weight of passengers, luggage, accessories, hitch hardware, and cargo carried by the truck. A bed rack, camper shell, toolboxes, or heavy passengers reduce what remains available. Find the payload label on the actual truck and stay within its gross vehicle weight rating.

Towing capacity is equally configuration-specific. Toyota’s 2023 comparison states maximums of up to 6,800 pounds for a Tacoma V6 and up to 7,500 pounds for a Ranger, depending on body style and equipment. Those are model-page maxima, not a promise for every used example. Verify the door label, owner’s manual, axle and hitch equipment, and the loaded trailer’s actual weight. Include tongue weight in the truck’s payload calculation, and confirm that the trailer brakes, wiring, and weight-distribution requirements match the vehicle.

Safety ratings must match the year and body style

Use the current IIHS small-pickup ratings and NHTSA results for the exact model year and cab. Ratings are not transferable across generations, body styles, or test methods. Active safety equipment—automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert—can also vary by trim and may be absent from an older used truck.

IIHS explains that its small-overlap test sends 25% of the vehicle’s front width into a rigid barrier at 40 mph. Its side test uses an SUV-like striking vehicle at 37 mph. Those controlled results help compare vehicles, but they do not predict every crash.

Rear-seat protection deserves special attention if passengers ride regularly. In a June 28, 2023 release, IIHS said none of five tested small crew-cab pickups earned a good rating in the then-updated moderate-overlap test. IIHS later changed the criteria in 2024: under the new method, the Frontier’s overall rating became good, the Ranger’s poor, and the Colorado and Gladiator’s marginal; the Tacoma’s overall grade did not change. Read the current result for the exact used truck rather than repeating an older headline grade. IIHS President David Harkey said, “Our updated moderate overlap front crash test proved to be challenging for small pickups. A common problem was that the rear passenger dummy’s head came dangerously close to the front seatback, and in many cases, dummy measurements indicated a risk of neck or chest injuries. All these things tell us that the rear seat belts need improvement.” The statement appears in IIHS’s June 28, 2023 release, which also explains the 2024 methodology update.

For a used vehicle, inspect seat belts, head restraints, child-seat anchors, airbags, and warning lights. A safety rating cannot compensate for missing equipment, crash damage, or poor maintenance on the particular truck.

What to check before buying a used midsize pickup

The FTC’s used-car buying guidance recommends researching the model and options, reviewing repair records and safety tests, obtaining a vehicle history report, and arranging an independent inspection. It specifically warns that a history report is not a substitute for an inspection because reports typically do not list mechanical problems. Request a written inspection report and repair estimates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the inspecting mechanic to address pickup-specific risks as well as ordinary used-car wear:

  • Frame and underbody corrosion, dents, weld repairs, or damage from off-road use.
  • Evidence of heavy towing, including hitch wear, brake-controller wiring, transmission-cooler plumbing, and uneven tire wear.
  • Suspension, steering, driveshaft, differential, and four-wheel-drive operation where fitted.
  • Brake thickness, rotor condition, tire age and load rating, fluid leaks, and cooling-system condition.
  • Warning lights, scan-tool fault codes, water intrusion, and operation of cameras, sensors, and climate controls.
  • Bed floor, tailgate hinges, tie-downs, and any aftermarket lift, lighting, winch, or electrical work.

Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup guidance. NHTSA says open recall repairs are free through the automaker’s local dealer. A recall search does not describe general condition, confirm maintenance, or replace an inspection and title-history review.

A practical decision rule

Choose the used midsize pickup when all of these are true:

  • The bed or towing ability solves a recurring problem that another vehicle or occasional rental would not solve cheaply or conveniently.
  • The exact truck fits your parking space and your passengers can ride comfortably for the trips you actually make.
  • Its EPA rating, insurance quote, tire choice, and expected maintenance fit your budget.
  • The payload and tow ratings cover your loaded use with a safety margin, not merely the brochure maximum.
  • The VIN has no unresolved safety recall, and an independent inspection finds no repair bill that changes the purchase decision.

Walk away or keep shopping if the truck only works with an optimistic fuel estimate, an empty-trailer weight, a barely adequate parking space, or a seller who will not allow an independent inspection. Condition and configuration matter more than the badge on the grille.
