Yes—but only for a buyer who wants the Maybach’s exceptional rear-seat comfort and can comfortably fund complex luxury-car ownership. A used Mercedes-Maybach S-Class may cost far less than it did new, yet that discount reflects steep depreciation, not inexpensive maintenance. The smart purchase is the individual car with complete records, a clean inspection, verified recall work and enough financial headroom for faults that are specific to a highly equipped flagship.
Is it worth buying a used Mercedes-Maybach S-Class?

What does a Maybach cost, and what do the published figures really mean?
New-car pricing shows the Maybach’s market position, but it cannot establish the fair price of a used example. Mercedes-Benz USA’s July 7, 2026 2027 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Quick Reference Guide lists these U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail prices:

ADAC’s Germany-specific listing for a configured 2025 Maybach S 580 4MATIC with 9G-TRONIC displays an estimated €2,890 per month and 231.2 euro cents per kilometer. Its calculation separates depreciation, operating costs, fixed costs and workshop costs, and allows different holding periods and annual mileage. The page does not establish the assumptions as a universal ownership budget: the result is for the displayed German configuration, its selected usage pattern and a 2025 car. It is not a U.S. estimate, not a quote for a used car and not a Maybach-wide average.
Use both references correctly. MSRP explains why depreciation can create an attractive used price. The ADAC figure demonstrates that total cost includes much more than fuel and scheduled servicing. Neither number tells you what your particular car will require, so obtain local labor and parts quotes after inspection.
What should you check before buying?
1. Demand complete records, not a verbal history
Ask for itemized invoices, digital service records and repair orders covering the entire ownership period. A stamped booklet alone may not show what was actually replaced. Check for:
- Gaps in time or mileage between services.
- Repeated repairs for the same warning light, leak or electrical fault.
- Open work orders, unresolved dashboard messages or a recently cleared fault history.
- Evidence that every major comfort feature works, rather than an assumption that it was never used.
- Ownership changes, storage periods and use as a chauffeur, rental or fleet vehicle.
Records should let the inspector identify what is due next and whether previous work was performed by a qualified Mercedes-Benz facility or an independent shop familiar with the platform.

2. Commission a Mercedes specialist inspection
Arrange a pre-purchase inspection with a workshop that regularly works on Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and require a written report. The report should distinguish immediate safety issues from deferred maintenance and cosmetic recommendations, then attach estimated repair costs to each item. A generic inspection that only checks tire tread, fluid levels and visible body damage is not sufficient for a Maybach.
Have the shop scan all applicable control units, road-test the car, inspect for fluid leaks and verify the operation of the equipment fitted to that vehicle identification number (VIN). Ask which tests are appropriate for the car’s exact market specification; equipment and software can differ by model, year and region.

The current Maybach S-Class equipment reference includes AIRMATIC suspension and rear-axle steering. These systems can materially affect ride comfort, maneuverability and repair complexity. The available evidence does not establish a Maybach-specific failure rate for either system, so the practical test is the condition of the individual car.
- Check whether the car sits level after being parked and whether its height changes as commanded.
- Listen for compressor, pump or abnormal suspension noises and note any warning messages.
- Confirm that the steering behaves consistently at parking speed and on the road.
- Inspect suspension components, lines, electrical connectors and evidence of previous collision or water damage.
Do not approve a purchase on the promise that a warning will be “reset later.” Require the underlying diagnosis and a costed repair plan.

A Maybach’s value is concentrated in systems that are easy to overlook during a short drive. Operate every seat adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage function; rear-seat screens and controls; climate zones; powered shades; doors and soft-close mechanisms; ambient lighting; cameras; parking aids; navigation and connectivity. Verify that the functions remain available after the car has warmed up and after a restart.

Have the inspection shop check the driver-assistance features fitted to that VIN, including warning messages, sensor alignment and camera visibility. A clean-looking dashboard does not prove that every module is communicating correctly.

Compare mileage with the records and condition of the interior. Very low mileage is not automatically better if the car spent long periods unused, because age, storage conditions and short-trip operation can still affect fluids, batteries, seals and electronics. A higher-mileage car with consistent servicing may be the more defensible purchase than a lightly used car with missing history.
Ask for a cold start, inspect the engine bay and underbody, and complete a sufficiently long road test to expose transmission behavior, cooling issues, brake vibration and intermittent warnings. The inspection report should identify upcoming maintenance rather than merely stating that the car drives well today.
How do I check recalls on a used Maybach?
Recall completion is VIN-specific. For a U.S.-market car, obtain the 17-digit VIN and check it in both the Mercedes-Benz USA recall lookup and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) VIN tool. Mercedes-Benz USA states that its recall page is for U.S. vehicles only; the page was updated October 12, 2026. A car imported from another country requires the relevant national recall authority and manufacturer, not the U.S. page alone.
- Copy the VIN directly from the vehicle and title or registration; do not rely on a seller’s typed transcription.
- Run the VIN through the Mercedes-Benz USA recall lookup if the car is U.S.-market.
- Run the same VIN through NHTSA’s lookup and save the displayed status.
- Ask the seller for repair invoices or dealer confirmation for every listed campaign.
- Have the selling dealer or your specialist confirm that no remedy remains open before money changes hands.
ADAC lists one limited example involving certain Maybach S-Class vehicles produced from September 2020 through December 2021. The issue concerned front-seat backrests and a possible effect on rear airbags in a crash; ADAC reports nine affected vehicles in Germany and 29 worldwide. That entry is not a model-wide rate and does not mean every car from those dates is affected. Only the individual VIN check establishes whether the campaign applies.

Which model year or engine should you buy?
No reliable Maybach-specific ranking by model year, engine, expected repair cost or reliability was established in the available evidence. General S-Class buying guides sometimes label certain years “best” or advise researching others, but those recommendations cover multiple S-Class versions and should not be presented as proven Maybach advice.
Instead of applying a year slogan, compare actual cars using the following order:

How much should you budget for maintenance?
There is no defensible universal annual Maybach maintenance figure in the available evidence. Do not convert the German ADAC scenario into a U.S. budget, and do not treat a new-car MSRP as a repair estimate. Taxes, insurance, labor rates, parts availability, mileage, specification and previous neglect vary substantially by market and vehicle.
Build your budget in three layers:
- Known scheduled work: use the car’s service records and the manufacturer’s maintenance requirements to identify the next due items.
- Inspection-identified work: obtain written estimates for every fault, worn component and overdue service before negotiating.
- Ownership capacity: retain enough liquidity for an unexpected electronic, suspension, comfort or drivetrain repair without relying on the car being trouble-free.
Ask at least one independent specialist and, where appropriate, a dealer service department for labor and parts estimates. A generic diagnostic scanner may not access every proprietary Mercedes system, so confirm that the inspecting shop has the appropriate equipment and experience.

Choosing the cheapest car
The lowest advertised price can represent deferred maintenance, missing records or a specification that is difficult to support locally. Compare the purchase price plus documented corrective work, not the listing price alone.

Assuming a flagship was always pampered
Luxury status does not prove careful servicing. Require invoices and test the equipment. A chauffeur or fleet history is not automatically disqualifying, but it makes mileage chronology and service quality especially important.
Relying on a broad “best year” answer
Without Maybach-specific evidence, model-year generalizations can hide differences in condition, software, options and recall status. Select the better-documented, better-inspected car.
Skipping the inspection because the car has a warranty
Warranty terms, exclusions and transferability differ. An inspection still identifies accident damage, wear, upcoming service and functions that may not qualify for coverage.

Checking recalls only after purchase
Run the VIN checks before signing. An open campaign may be repairable at no charge, but you should know its status and arrange completion rather than discovering it after delivery.
When is a used Maybach a smart buy?
It is a rational choice when the rear-seat experience and quiet, highly equipped character are central to your priorities; the purchase leaves room for ongoing maintenance; records are complete; the inspection is clean or its repairs are priced; recalls are closed; and a capable specialist is accessible in your area.
It is a poor choice when the attraction is simply getting an expensive car cheaply, when a single unexpected repair would strain your finances, when the seller cannot document servicing, or when no nearby workshop can diagnose the car’s electronic and chassis systems. In those situations, a lower purchase price can produce the least affordable ownership experience.
What the manufacturer’s manual says about unresolved problems
The 2025 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Sedan Owner’s Manual, published by Mercedes-Benz Canada, gives a clear safety instruction: “If you should experience any problem with your vehicle, particularly one that you believe may affect its safe operation, we urge you to contact a Mercedes-Benz Service Center immediately to have the problem diagnosed and rectified.” That is manufacturer guidance, not a promise of reliability or a cost estimate, but it is a useful standard for handling warning messages and safety-related faults.
