A used Lexus SC 430 can make a compelling open-air luxury cruiser for around $15,000, but the budget is a shopping target—not a promise of a clean, trouble-free car. Its appeal is a smooth V8, a power-retractable hardtop and a plush two-seat-first cabin. Whether it is a good buy comes down to the individual car’s condition, service history and roof operation.
What makes the SC 430 a luxury cruiser?
The SC 430 is a two-door 2+2 convertible with a power-retractable hardtop. With the roof raised, it has a coupe-like enclosed cabin; with it lowered, it offers open-air driving. That flexibility is central to the car’s appeal, though it comes with limited passenger and luggage practicality.
Lexus’s 2002 Canadian specification lists a 4.3-liter 3UZ-FE V8 producing 300 hp at 5,600 rpm and 325 lb-ft at 3,400 rpm, paired with a five-speed Super ECT automatic and rear-wheel drive. The same specification lists 8.8 cubic feet of trunk space; it does not establish how much space remains with the roof stowed. Lexus Canada’s 2002 SC 430 specifications provide the details.
Output differs by model year: Lexus’s announcement for the 2010 SC 430 lists 288 horsepower and 317 lb-ft. Do not assume the 2002 figures apply to every car in the 2002–2010 range. Lexus’s 2010 announcement gives that model-year figure.

Consumer Reports describes the SC 430 as a plush retractable-hardtop personal luxury car and characterizes its V8 as smooth and refined, while noting that the car is not particularly quick. That is a useful description of its mission: relaxed cruising rather than sharp-edged sports-car performance. Consumer Reports’ 2002 overview discusses its character.
Does $15,000 buy a good SC 430?
It may buy an earlier example, but the available price reference is not a survey of current listings or a guarantee of condition. Kelley Blue Book displayed a $13,500 starting price and an $11,900 current resale value for the 2002 SC 430 Convertible 2D when accessed on October 8, 2026. Those are estimates for that specific year and trim, not reported completed-sale prices or a reliable valuation for every model year, mileage, region or condition. Use $15,000 as a starting budget for comparing actual cars, not as a reason to overlook deferred maintenance. A lower asking price can leave room for inspection and repairs, while a more expensive example may be worthwhile if its records and condition support the premium. What to check before buying a used SC 430
1. Service records and overall condition
Ask for maintenance documentation and review the vehicle history. Inspect the paint and cabin for wear or damage, check for warning lights, and look for signs of neglected repairs. Have an independent shop familiar with older Lexus or Toyota vehicles inspect the car before purchase. The available sources do not establish a timing-belt service interval, typical repair costs or a comparative reliability ranking, so get vehicle-specific advice rather than relying on unsupported claims about common failures.

2. The complete hardtop cycle
Ask the seller to demonstrate the retractable hardtop and watch it complete a full opening and closing cycle. Confirm that it latches and seals. This check follows from the complexity and importance of the powered roof; it is not evidence of a documented defect rate.
3. VIN-specific recall status
Enter the car’s VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup and ask for documentation of completed repairs. NHTSA explains that a VIN search can show unrepaired recalls. The agency’s Takata recall information includes SC 430 vehicles from 2002 through 2010, but model year alone does not establish whether a particular car is covered or whether work remains outstanding. Lexus recall material describes a passenger-airbag inflator campaign for covered vehicles; the VIN check is the way to assess an individual car.

4. Tires, wheels and model-year details
Lexus’s 2002 specification lists 245/40ZR18 run-flat performance summer tires. Before buying replacement tires, check the vehicle’s door placard and the wheels actually installed; a modified car or another model year may differ. Confirm the exact model year and equipment from the vehicle records rather than transferring 2002 specifications to every SC 430.

The SC 430 makes the most sense for a buyer who values a comfortable cabin, V8 refinement and the choice between a closed roof and open-air driving more than brisk acceleration, rear-seat usefulness or generous luggage capacity. It is a personal luxury convertible with 2+2 seating, not a practical family car or a sports car chosen primarily for speed.

Consider another vehicle if you need frequent rear-passenger space, substantial cargo room or a car whose purchase decision can be made from the model name alone. At this budget, the individual car’s documented upkeep and inspection results matter more than a broad reputation.
