BMW maintenance and repairs can be expensive, so review the car’s records, check its VIN for open recalls, and have it independently inspected before you commit.
What reliability data can—and can’t—tell you
Consumer Reports’ used-car reliability histories use member surveys covering model years 2000–2025 and some early 2026 models when enough responses are available. They compare a model’s reported problem rate with the average for vehicles of the same model year. Look up the exact BMW model and year rather than treating a brand-wide ranking as a prediction for one car. An unavailable verdict can mean there is not enough data, not necessarily that the model is unreliable. Consumer Reports’ BMW overview also cautions that its rankings have scope limits.
On its 2026 brand page, Consumer Reports places BMW sixth for used-car reliability and 25th for maintenance and repair cost. It describes BMW costs as relatively expensive among luxury brands and advises used buyers to have warranty protection or budget for repairs. These broad comparisons do not establish what a particular car will need.
What problems should you check for?
Without the model, year, engine, mileage, and market, there is no sound basis for naming a specific recurring mechanical fault as a universal BMW problem. Use the VIN and exact vehicle details to identify applicable reliability information and recalls; ask the inspector to assess the actual car rather than relying on generic lists or isolated owner reports.

Service history and maintenance
Ask for service records and receipts, then compare documented work and intervals with the maintenance schedule for that exact car. Receipts can corroborate the seller’s account and show mileage at service. Follow up on gaps, unexplained inconsistencies, or maintenance that appears due. Consumer Reports recommends checking records and the manufacturer’s schedule as part of evaluating a used car. Its used-car buying guide explains the broader process.
Accident, damage, and title history
Review a vehicle-history report and title information for reported accidents, damage, title events, and any available maintenance records. Treat the report as a clue, not proof that the car has never been damaged: incidents that were never reported may not appear. Ask the seller about any identified repairs and have the car examined in person.

Open recalls
Check the individual VIN rather than relying on a model-year search. BMW’s U.S. FAQ says owners can enter the VIN on its recall site or use the My BMW App; BMW says recall repairs are free at an authorized BMW Center. You can also use NHTSA’s recall lookup. Independent inspection
Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic before buying. For possible collision damage, Consumer Reports Autos Editor John Ibbotson recommends a mechanic experienced in auto bodywork and accident repair: “If you can, have a mechanic experienced in auto bodywork and accident repair give the vehicle a detailed inspection,” Consumer Reports’ used-car guide advises. A BMW specialist may be useful where available, but the cited guidance does not make dealer inspection a requirement.

How to compare two used BMWs
Compare the specific vehicles on evidence and total ownership costs, not just asking price or brand reputation.
- Model and year: Check reliability information for each exact model year, noting whether enough data exists.
- Records and upcoming maintenance: Compare service-history completeness and any work due.
- Condition and mileage: Use the inspection findings to understand the actual car, not mileage alone.
- History and recalls: Review title and damage records and check open recalls by VIN.
- Ownership cost: Add the purchase price to likely maintenance and repair costs. Get an insurance quote and ask a local shop about inspection findings.
- Coverage: Verify what warranty or CPO protection applies to that specific vehicle, including terms and exclusions.
Is BMW Certified Pre-Owned worth considering?
BMW’s U.S. Certified Pre-Owned program describes a review of the vehicle-history and maintenance records, inspection and reconditioning, and a comprehensive road test using BMW diagnostic equipment. Its current page lists standard eligibility as more than 300 miles and fewer than 60,000 miles; the checklist says vehicles must be five years old or newer. It also lists checks covering tires, wheels, brakes, body, mechanical condition, diagnostics, and the road test. Check the current program requirements and read the actual contract for the vehicle you are considering. Certification adds a documented process and protection, but it does not erase the car’s history. BMW’s U.S. CPO page provides program details; its inspection checklist lists checks.

As a separate, broad comparison, Consumer Reports’ 2026 survey analysis found that CPO purchases had about 14 percent fewer problems than other used-car purchases. That is an aggregate result, not a BMW-specific rate or a guarantee about an individual car. Consumer Reports’ CPO overview discusses the category.

Before you make an offer
- Get the VIN, exact model year, mileage, and maintenance schedule for the car.
- Ask for service records and receipts; investigate gaps and work that is due.
- Review history and title information, then ask about any reported damage or repairs.
- Check recall status by VIN and confirm whether open work has been completed.
- Book an independent inspection and use its findings to estimate near-term costs.
- Compare the total price, expected upkeep, and any applicable warranty or CPO terms with another candidate.
