The price data supports part of the headline. New Toyota Corolla Altis models sold in Pakistan carried ex-factory prices of roughly PKR 6.1 million to PKR 7.7 million from July 1, 2025. But those prices do not show that only the extremely rich can buy one. Affordability depends on income, which the available material does not measure for this market, so the stronger claim remains unproven.
Which country and model this refers to
The headline does not name a country. Coverage that discusses a locally sold Corolla Altis and identifies Indus Motor Company as Toyota’s official vehicle assembler points to Pakistan. Treat that as a strong inference rather than a confirmed fact. “Corolla Altis” is the name under which the Corolla is sold locally there, so every figure below refers to that model and that market.
Listed prices for the Corolla Altis
Pakistani reporting on the price schedule that took effect on July 1, 2025 lists the following ex-factory prices. These are secondary reports of the schedule, not a copy of Toyota’s own price list, and they are now more than a year old as of October 2026.

What the spread means
The gap between the cheapest listed trim and the most expensive is PKR 1,610,000, or about 26% above the entry price. Most of that gap comes from choosing a larger engine, an automatic gearbox, or a higher trim, not from a single price increase. A buyer who chooses the manual 1.6 pays roughly PKR 6.1 million before any other charges; a buyer who chooses the top Grande trim pays about PKR 7.7 million on the same schedule.

Why the ex-factory price is not what you pay
An ex-factory price is the price before registration, taxes and dealer-side charges. A retailer page labelled 2026 lists the base Altis X Manual 1.6 at PKR 6,394,554 on-road in Karachi for a filer. That is about PKR 295,554 above the July 2025 ex-factory figure for the same trim, but the two numbers come from different dates, so the gap should not be read as a clean tax calculation.
Factors that change the total
- Province of registration. The same entry trim is priced differently by location. The retailer page shows a difference of PKR 111,868 between Karachi and Peshawar for filers.
- Filer status. The Karachi on-road figure applies to filers. Non-filer buyers should expect a different total and should ask the dealer for a written breakdown.
- Trim and transmission. Manual and CVT versions, and the 1.6 and 1.8 engines, carry different ex-factory prices before any on-road charges are added.
- Date. Retailer figures for 2026 and the July 2025 ex-factory list are not the same schedule. Prices can change, and the retailer page itself warns that its figures can move.
The regional comparison and where it comes from
A PakWheels article dated October 7, 2025 reports a regional price comparison from Amir Allawala, identified there as a senior representative of PAMA, the industry body for automakers. The claim is that locally assembled cars in Pakistan are cheaper than comparable models in Thailand and Indonesia. This is an industry position, not an independent audit of regional prices.

The article’s worked example uses the Toyota Corolla 1.8 CVT (AT). It gives the Pakistan factory price as PKR 7,029,000 and a converted net price of US$18,497 at PKR 285 per US dollar. That exchange rate was part of the article’s own calculation and is not a current rate. The net figure is not the same as the factory price converted at the same rate, which would be about US$24,660. The article does not restate the deductions behind the net figure, so the two numbers should not be compared directly.
Allawala is quoted as saying “India is a unique case where six million cars are produced, leading to economies of scale,” and “Our cars are already cheaper than those in Indonesia and Thailand before taxes.” Both statements are attributed to an industry representative and should be read that way. No official Toyota or government statement on regional pricing was found in the material reviewed.

Why buyers feel the car is expensive
Public discussion, including a Pakistan-focused subreddit, contains questions such as “Why are Toyota cars so unaffordable these days?” and “Why are Toyota Corollas so expensive now?” These are individual posts, not a survey, and they show perception rather than measured affordability.
One structural point appears in the same PakWheels reporting. It attributes US$1.55 billion in automotive parts imports for fiscal year 2024–25 to the State Bank of Pakistan, and notes that this figure excludes completely built units. That shows how dependent local assembly is on imported components. The article does not link that import figure to Corolla price changes, so it should not be read as the cause of the prices above.

What would be needed to test the “extremely rich” claim
The headline makes a statement about income, and price alone cannot support it. A test would need four things:
- Define the buyer. Decide whether the unit is one person, a household, or a household with one earner. The answer changes the result by a large margin.
- Use an official income measure. A current, nationally representative figure from an official household income or earnings survey is required. The material reviewed did not include one, and a per-capita GDP figure is not a substitute for household purchasing power.
- Use the on-road price. Apply the full cost a buyer would pay in the chosen city, not the ex-factory list price.
- State the affordability measure. For example: years of after-tax income needed to pay the on-road price in full, or the share of income that would go to a loan. Financing terms were not covered in the material reviewed, so any loan calculation needs current lender terms.
Until those inputs are in place, the accurate statement is that the car is expensive relative to listed prices, with the affordability conclusion left open.

How to check a current price before deciding
- Ask an authorised dealer for a written, itemised on-road quote for the exact trim and city.
- Confirm the date of the price schedule the dealer is using, and compare it with the July 1, 2025 list only if the dates match.
- State your filer status at the quote stage, because the total changes with it.
- Ask for the same quote for two trims, such as the manual 1.6 and the CVT 1.8, so the gap is measured on identical terms.
- Keep the written quote; prices in retailer and reporting pages can change without notice.
Verdict
The headline is directionally fair about cost: a new Corolla Altis in Pakistan lists at several million rupees before on-road charges, and the step from the entry trim to the top trim is large. The claim that only the extremely rich can afford one is not established. The available figures give no current income measure, the most recent ex-factory schedule found dates from July 2025, and the regional comparison comes from an industry representative. A fair headline would say that the car is costly for its listed price, and that whether it is out of reach depends on income data the reporting does not provide.
