Yes, for the right beginner—but not for someone who needs a cheap, dependable daily driver. An FD RX-7 can be a rewarding first project if you have funds beyond the purchase price, time to source parts, and access to a rotary-experienced shop. Its rotary engine and sequential turbo system, age, and uneven parts availability make it a demanding choice on a tight budget or a deadline.
What makes the FD rewarding—and challenging?
Mazda’s official history says the third-generation RX-7 launched in 1991 with a 13B two-rotor rotary engine and sequential twin turbochargers. Mazda lists 255 PS and a front-midship layout with 50:50 weight distribution for the model. The company describes its aim as developing “a world-class sports car” around “the best rotary engine pure sports car” concept. Mazda’s corporate history
That specialized powertrain is part of the car’s appeal, but it also means an owner should not assume that general experience with older piston-engine project cars is enough. Hagerty’s March 19, 2024 report describes the 13B-REW’s staged twin-turbo operation and says fewer than 70,000 FD RX-7s were built from 1991 to 2002. Those details help explain why expertise and sourcing matter; they are not a current price guide. Hagerty’s FD RX-7 report
How much does an FD RX-7 project cost?
There is no reliable universal total for buying, restoring, or maintaining an FD. A asking price alone cannot tell you whether a car is economical: a cheap example may be incomplete, modified, poorly documented, or in need of specialist work. Current costs depend on the individual car, parts availability in your region, and local labor rates.

Before committing, ask a rotary-specialist shop for a written inspection and estimate. Build your budget around the engine assessment, cooling system, turbo system, missing or altered components, body and accident condition, parts lead times, and labor. Keep a contingency for problems uncovered after purchase; if you must complete the project by a deadline, avoid relying on the FD as your only transportation.
Are FD RX-7 parts still available?
Mazda Classic parts in Japan
Mazda Japan says its Classic Mazda program has reissued about 90 FC/FD repair parts and plans to expand the program. It also warns that some parts take time to manufacture. The company says the parts are obtained through Mazda group dealers and parts companies, and notes that some continuing genuine parts are nearing the end of procurement. The program’s availability, price, and stock should not be assumed to apply outside Japan. Mazda’s reissued-parts list was updated July 13, 2026; its final-procurement list was updated September 15, 2026. Mazda Japan’s Classic Mazda parts information

Catalogs and manuals
Mazda Motorsports provides RX-7 parts-catalog resources for model years 1993, 1994, and 1995, along with collision guides for several years. A separate listing includes 1993–95 13B rebuild parts. Catalogs can help identify the correct component, but an entry in a catalog does not mean the part is currently orderable. Mazda Motorsports says workshop manuals are not available for download and describes a limited purchase route for eligible members. Mazda Motorsports RX-7 resources Mazda Motorsports RX-7 parts lists
What to check before buying
Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection with a shop that knows rotary engines. Treat this as practical buying guidance, not a Mazda factory checklist.

- Get a rotary-appropriate compression assessment. Ask the shop to explain the results in writing rather than relying on a generic engine check.
- Review the car’s history. Request service records and confirm the engine and turbo configuration. Look for undocumented modifications and changes that may complicate diagnosis or sourcing.
- Inspect systems and condition. Ask the specialist to assess signs of overheating, leaks, accident repair, and incomplete vacuum or turbo plumbing.
- Check completeness against local availability. Identify missing or altered parts and confirm whether they can be sourced where you live, including likely lead times.
- Get the likely work priced before purchase. Use the written inspection and region-specific parts and labor quotes to decide whether the project fits your budget and schedule.
Who should choose an FD as a first project?
| Situation | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You have a repair reserve, time, and access to rotary-skilled labor | Potentially a good fit | You can plan around specialist diagnosis and parts sourcing rather than expecting a quick, low-cost build. |
| You are learning but can work with a rotary specialist | Possible, with careful planning | The FD can be a motivating project, but unfamiliar problems may require expert input and a realistic schedule. |
| You have a tight budget or need dependable daily transportation | Poor fit | The available evidence does not establish a predictable total cost, and parts or specialist work may take time. |
| You are considering an incomplete or heavily modified example without records | High risk | Condition, missing parts, and undocumented changes can make both diagnosis and budgeting harder. |
The best first FD is not necessarily the cheapest listing. It is the example whose condition, documentation, local parts prospects, and specialist inspection support a budget and timeline you can tolerate.
