The automatic tested had performance exhaust, and the available figures do not establish an identical-options, tires, launch-procedure, or test-conditions comparison. They show that an automatic GT can be quicker to 60 mph—not that every automatic Mustang is faster in every measure.
What the available 0–60 mph results show
| Mustang tested | 0–60 mph | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mustang GT with automatic transmission | 3.7 seconds | Car and Driver identifies this GT as having performance exhaust. The source does not establish that its options, tires, launch procedure, and test conditions matched the manual test. |
| Mustang GT with manual transmission | 4.2 seconds | Car and Driver’s reported result; the source does not establish a fully matched configuration with the automatic test. |
Car and Driver’s Mustang review and specifications also report a 4.1-second 0–60 mph time for a Dark Horse. That is a different trim, so it should not be used as a GT transmission comparison.

Which transmissions are available on 2026 Mustangs?
For the 2026 U.S. lineup, Ford lists the Mustang GT with a 5.0L V8, a standard six-speed manual with rev matching, and an available 10-speed automatic. The Dark Horse has a different standard-equipment arrangement: its 10-speed automatic is standard, while a TREMEC six-speed manual is optional. Check the specific model year and trim when comparing cars.

Those are engine-output figures for the listed configurations; they do not prove that the transmission alone caused the difference between the cited acceleration times. Why the 10-speed automatic may help in acceleration
The transmission specifications illustrate a difference in gearing, but do not independently establish which car will accelerate faster in a particular test. Ford’s 2025 technical specifications list six ratios for the GT manual and ten for the GT automatic:
| 2025 Mustang GT transmission | Listed gear ratios |
|---|---|
| Six-speed manual | 3.237, 2.104, 1.422, 1.000, 0.814, 0.622 |
| 10-speed automatic | 4.696, 2.985, 2.146, 1.769, 1.520, 1.275, 1.000, 0.854, 0.689, 0.636 |
More ratios can give an automatic more opportunities to keep the engine in a useful speed range during acceleration, while shifts are handled by the transmission. But gearing alone is not a real-world performance result: the car’s full configuration and the test method matter. Ford’s 2025 Mustang technical specifications establish the listed transmissions and ratios, not a universal automatic advantage.

“Faster” depends on the measure
The cited comparison is specifically about 0–60 mph acceleration. It does not compare quarter-mile times, rolling acceleration, lap times, or top speed. A result in one of those measures cannot be inferred from the 0–60 figures. For a fair comparison, match model year, trim, engine output, options, tires, launch procedure, and test conditions as closely as possible—and say which performance measure is being compared.
How to choose between manual and automatic
If your priority is the quickest documented 0–60 mph result among these cited GT examples, the automatic has the lower reported time. If you prefer choosing gears and operating the clutch yourself, the manual offers that experience; the acceleration figures do not measure driving enjoyment. For a purchase decision, compare the exact model year and trim you intend to buy rather than treating a result from one configuration as a verdict on every Mustang.
