There is no single defensible top-15 list for 2024 without first deciding whether electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, conventional hybrids and SUVs count—and whether “efficient” means EPA window-sticker ratings or an adjusted real-world estimate. For U.S. model-year 2024 vehicles, the fairest comparison starts with the exact vehicle’s EPA label and a consistent metric: MPG for gasoline operation, or MPGe for electric operation.

Because the title alone does not specify those rules, an exact ranked list of 15 models would risk mixing unlike vehicles or misrepresenting their ratings. Here’s how to compare the most efficient choices accurately, and what the official 2024 data can—and cannot—establish.

Why an exact top 15 needs a clear comparison rule

EPA ratings vary by vehicle configuration, including trim, drivetrain, wheels, engine and transmission. A model name alone may not identify one rating: the result should be checked against the exact model-year record and the vehicle’s window sticker. EPA’s detailed automotive trends data provides a reproducible starting point, while its fuel-economy label guidance explains what buyers can compare.

The ranking also changes depending on whether it includes battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), conventional hybrids, and SUVs. EPA regulatory categories do not map neatly to everyday use of the word “car”: in model year 2024, 34% of new vehicles were categorized as cars and 66% as trucks under NHTSA regulatory categories, according to EPA’s 2026 report highlights. Many SUVs fall into the truck category, though some are classified as cars.

  • Choose the vehicle scope: for example, sedans only, or passenger vehicles including SUVs.
  • Choose powertrains: decide whether BEVs and PHEVs share a comparison with gasoline vehicles and conventional hybrids.
  • Choose one rating basis: use EPA combined window-sticker MPG/MPGe or a clearly identified real-world estimate, not a mixture.
  • Compare exact configurations: verify the EPA record for the model year, make, model, engine, transmission and drivetrain or trim.

EPA’s 2024 Automotive Trends Report uses adjusted real-world estimates for trend analysis; those are not the same as the values printed on fuel-economy labels at the time of sale. It identifies the Hyundai Ioniq 6 as the highest MY2024 vehicle in a preliminary report table at 137.0 on the report’s metric. That figure should not be substituted for a window-sticker combined MPGe rating.

What the official 2024 efficiency figures show

The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 summary reports broad ranges across model-year 2024 vehicles, not a ranked list of 15 models. Its underlying EPA fuel-economy website datafiles were accessed October 2, 2024.

Vehicle group Reported MY2024 range How to read it
Electric vehicles 53–140 MPGe; 1.49–4.17 miles per kWh on the EPA combined cycle MPGe is an energy-equivalence measure, not miles per gallon of gasoline. DOE says EPA’s label conversion uses 33.7 kWh per gallon equivalent.
Gasoline vehicles, including traditional hybrids 9–57 MPG These figures use miles per gallon of gasoline. The range covers a broad vehicle set, not just cars or hybrids.

These ranges make clear why a single ranking can mislead: MPGe and MPG describe different energy sources, and the group boundaries matter. The DOE summary does not establish which 15 vehicles belong on a list or how to rank their individual trims. See DOE Fact of the Week #1373 for the reported ranges and conversion basis.

How to compare the options that fit your driving

A maximum efficiency score is only one part of the purchase decision. EPA labels provide additional context, including fuel-cost comparisons and emissions ratings; EV labels also include driving range and charging-time information. Use the exact vehicle’s label, then weigh the details that affect your own use:

  • Energy cost: compare fuel or electricity costs using local prices and your expected driving. An efficient rating alone does not predict your bill.
  • Range and charging: for a BEV or PHEV, consider the labeled range, charging time and whether you can charge where you live or work.
  • Vehicle fit: body style, passenger and cargo space, and drivetrain can narrow the relevant comparison before efficiency breaks a tie.
  • Emissions and ownership cost: use the label’s emissions information and fuel-cost comparison alongside purchase price and your expected mileage.

How to check a specific 2024 vehicle’s rating

  1. Open EPA’s fuel-economy label guidance and use the vehicle lookup linked there.
  2. Select model year 2024, then match the make, model, engine and transmission to the vehicle you are considering.
  3. Confirm the drivetrain and trim or other configuration details against the actual vehicle’s window sticker; do not assume another version of the same model has the same rating.
  4. Compare combined MPG for gasoline use or combined MPGe for electric operation, keeping the units visible. For plug-in hybrids, distinguish electric operation from gasoline operation rather than treating one number as the whole story.
  5. Review the label’s fuel-cost, emissions, range and charging details where applicable before comparing vehicles for your needs.

For a used vehicle, EPA says the original fuel-economy estimate remains the best indicator of average gas mileage over a typical 15-year life when the vehicle is properly maintained. Actual results vary with driving and vehicle condition.

How 2024 efficiency compares with the broader fleet

EPA’s 2026 report highlights put the average new vehicle’s model-year 2024 real-world fuel economy at 27.2 mpg, up 0.1 mpg and a record at the time of the report. That is a fleetwide trend estimate, not the rating of an individual vehicle and not directly interchangeable with a window-sticker combined rating.
