Yes—if the specific SUV fits your streets, parking spaces and running-cost expectations. A boxy profile can make the cabin and cargo area useful, but it does not tell you whether the vehicle will clear a garage, turn around a narrow corner or provide a good view while reversing. For city use, check the exact vehicle’s length, width with mirrors open, turning-circle measurement, driver sightlines, parking-camera coverage, fuel or energy consumption, and the space you actually need to carry.
Why the word boxy is not enough
Boxy SUVs usually have upright sides, a tall roof and a relatively square rear body. That shape can make interior space easier to use: doors may open into a more practical cabin, the roof can provide useful headroom, and the rear volume can be less tapered than in a coupe-like crossover. Those are genuine advantages for shopping, child seats, bicycles or bulky luggage.

Parking, however, is governed by the vehicle’s outer dimensions and steering geometry. A squared-off rear does not make a long vehicle short, and a tall driving position does not guarantee that you can see every low obstacle or cyclist. Two SUVs that look similarly upright can differ substantially in width, turning circle and mirror overhang. Treat the body style as a starting description, not a parking specification.

Overall length affects bays, ramps and turning space
Length determines whether the front or rear projects into a walkway or traffic lane when you park. It also affects how many steering corrections you need in a multi-storey garage. Measure the available bay from end to end, including any wall, pillar or door clearance. A published vehicle length normally refers to the vehicle itself; it does not tell you how much room you need to open the hatch or doors.

For scale, Toyota Europe’s 2021 launch material lists the Yaris Cross at 4,180 mm long. Dacia UK lists the Bigster at 4.57 m, or 4,570 mm. Those figures describe different vehicles and markets, but they show why the word compact can be misleading: a difference of several hundred millimetres is noticeable when a bay or turning head is tight.
Width must include the mirrors you will actually use
Garage entrances, narrow lanes and neighbouring cars interact with the widest part of the vehicle. Compare the width with the mirrors open, and check whether the manufacturer also publishes a folded-mirror figure. Body width without mirrors is useful for understanding the cabin, but it cannot answer the question will it fit my garage?
Mazda’s US page for the 2026 CX-5 describes the vehicle as under 7 feet wide with the mirrors open and just over 15 feet long. Dacia’s UK Bigster dimensions list 1.81 m wide excluding mirrors. Do not place those two width numbers in a direct garage comparison: they are measured on different bases. Measure your opening at its narrowest point, account for the mirror housings, and leave enough side clearance for the way you enter and exit.

A turning circle can mean different things. Manufacturers may quote a diameter, a radius, a curb-to-curb circle, a wall-to-wall circle or a tyre-based figure. Read the label before comparing numbers. A smaller number is not automatically better if one figure is a radius and the other is a diameter.

Mazda gives the 2026 CX-5 a 36.8-foot turning diameter. Dacia UK lists a 10.96 m turning circle between kerbs for most Bigster powertrains and 11.01 m for two specified hybrid 4×4 versions. Toyota Europe’s Yaris Cross material uses the wording 5.3 m turning radius/circle (tyre). Because Toyota’s wording combines radius and circle and specifies the tyre measurement, it should not be compared casually with Mazda’s curb-style diameter or Dacia’s between-kerbs figure.

Parking technology helps, but it does not park the SUV for you
Sensors and cameras
Parking sensors warn when a bumper approaches an object, while a reversing camera shows an area behind the vehicle that mirrors cannot cover. Mazda says the 2026 CX-5 has front and rear parking sensors and a rearview monitor; the 360-degree monitor is listed on the 2.5 S Premium Plus trim. Confirm whether the trim you want includes the camera view and whether the display remains clear in rain, darkness and direct sunlight.
Camera guidelines are assistance, not a guarantee of clearance. A lens can be dirty, a low object can fall below the detection area, and a camera perspective can make distances look different from reality. Use the mirrors, look over your shoulder where possible, and stop if the view is uncertain.

Rear cross-traffic alerts
Rear cross-traffic warning can detect approaching vehicles while you reverse from a space with blocked side visibility. Hyundai describes the feature on specified 2026 Venue trims and explicitly cautions that it is not a substitute for attentive driving, mirrors and looking around while backing. Availability is trim- and market-dependent, so check the equipment list rather than assuming every version has it.
These systems are most valuable when they supplement a good driving position and a manageable turning circle. They cannot make an oversized SUV fit a narrow entrance, and they do not remove the need to check for pedestrians, bicycles, posts and low walls.
Visibility from the driver’s seat matters more than the roofline
An upright windshield and higher seat can make traffic easier to read, and Toyota’s Yaris Cross material describes a higher driving position and visibility. That does not establish that all boxy SUVs have fewer blind spots. Thick pillars, a high beltline, head restraints and a large tailgate can still block parts of the view.

- Set the seat and steering wheel as you would for daily driving, then check the front corners and the area immediately ahead of the bumper.
- Adjust the side mirrors and look for lanes, cyclists and pedestrians beside the rear quarter.
- Check whether the rear head restraints, cargo cover or third-row seat obstruct the rear window.
- Try a child-seat position or the cargo configuration you normally use; it can change what you can see.
- Reverse past a controlled row of cones or parked cars, using the mirrors and camera together rather than relying on the screen alone.
City practicality includes fuel, energy and carrying needs
Fuel consumption can outweigh parking convenience
Frequent stop-start traffic makes urban consumption important. Mazda lists an EPA-estimated 24 mpg city for the 2026 CX-5 in the United States. That is a specific model-year and market estimate, not a prediction for every boxy SUV or for real-world results in another country. Compare the official city figure for the powertrain you are considering, then allow for winter temperatures, short trips, heavy loads, roof equipment and idling.
If two vehicles fit equally well, the one with lower city energy use may be the more practical daily choice. If you routinely carry passengers or equipment, however, choosing a smaller vehicle solely for its consumption can create a different problem: overloading the cabin or making every trip inconvenient.
Cargo volume should match your routine
Mazda lists 33.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats for the 2026 CX-5. That figure is useful only when compared with what you carry and how the manufacturer measures cargo volume. Put a tape measure on your own largest items—stroller, flat-pack furniture, musical instrument, shopping crates or sports gear—and check hatch opening height and floor length, not just the published number.

An upright rear body can make loading easier, but the vehicle still needs enough room around it for the hatch to open. In a tight underground bay, a large cargo area is less useful if you cannot lift the hatch without striking a wall or the car behind you.

How to evaluate a boxy SUV before you buy
- Measure your real spaces. Record the narrowest garage opening, the internal width between pillars, the bay length and the turning area at the entrance. Include shelves, kerbs, charging equipment and the door swing.
- Obtain complete vehicle dimensions. Ask for overall length, body width, mirror-open width, mirror-folded width, height with roof rails if fitted, and ground clearance. Make sure the figures apply to the exact trim and wheel package.
- Check the turning convention. Find out whether the published number is a radius or diameter and whether it is measured between kerbs, walls or tyres. Use the same convention when comparing vehicles.
- Inspect the parking equipment. List front and rear sensors, reversing-camera coverage, a 360-degree view, cross-traffic warning and any automatic parking function. Verify standard versus optional equipment.
- Test sightlines in the driver’s seat. Adjust the seat, mirrors and steering wheel yourself. Check blind spots with a person or safe marker outside the vehicle, not only from a brochure image.
- Drive a representative route. Include your narrowest street, a multi-storey ramp, a supermarket bay and the location where you normally reverse or turn around. If a test drive cannot include those places, recreate their constraints safely nearby.
- Calculate the daily trade-off. Compare city fuel or energy use, insurance and parking costs with the passenger and cargo capacity you actually need. A vehicle that is easy to park but cannot carry your routine load may not be practical overall.
When a boxy SUV is a sensible city choice
It is a strong fit when your usual spaces accommodate its mirror width and length, its turning measurement suits your manoeuvres, and you genuinely use the upright cabin or cargo area. Parking sensors and cameras add confidence, especially in dark or crowded garages, provided you continue to check surroundings. A higher seat can also make entry and traffic observation comfortable for some drivers.
When another shape or size may work better
Look beyond the styling if your parking bay is narrow, your route includes frequent hairpin turns, or your city imposes high fuel, congestion or parking charges. A shorter or narrower crossover may be easier to place, while a hatchback may offer a lower loading floor and better economy. The right alternative depends on measured space and carrying requirements, not on whether a vehicle is marketed as boxy.

- Measure the garage and the tightest parking space, including the entrance.
- Confirm width with mirrors open and folded; do not rely on body width alone.
- Record length and height, including roof rails or other fitted equipment.
- Check whether the turning figure is a radius, diameter, tyre circle or between-kerbs measurement.
- Verify sensors, camera views and cross-traffic warning on the exact trim.
- Assess blind spots and hatch clearance from the driver’s seat.
- Compare the relevant market’s city fuel or energy figure.
- Measure your largest regular cargo item and check the hatch opening.
- Test-drive a route that reproduces your narrow streets, ramps and parking manoeuvres.
Verdict
A boxy SUV can be practical for city driving and parking when its measured dimensions, steering geometry, visibility and operating costs match your environment. The shape may improve interior usability, but only an exact-vehicle check tells you whether it will clear your garage, turn in your streets and handle your daily load.
