What the President’s car actually is
The presidential limousine is a bespoke protective vehicle with Cadillac styling. General Motors says it is built to the exacting standards of the U.S. Secret Service while retaining recognizable Cadillac design cues. The current generation, introduced in 2018, takes visual inspiration from the Cadillac CT6, but it is not a CT6 that a customer could order from a dealer.

Secret Service personnel described the vehicle’s underlying structure in a 2024 public appearance as a modified truck chassis. That helps explain why its appearance can suggest a luxury sedan while its engineering brief is much closer to a specialized heavy-duty platform. Commercial components may be shared with consumer vehicles, but that does not make the limousine a production car or imply that parts are interchangeable.

Protection and visibility have to work together when the vehicle is moving through a public ceremony.

Publicly described safety and security features
Run-flat devices in the wheels
A 2024 report on a Jay Leno’s Garage appearance with Secret Service personnel says Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jay Nasworthy described a “run flat device” in each wheel. The purpose is to help the limousine continue moving if a tire is damaged. The report does not present a complete engineering specification, identify the exact tire model or establish that every vehicle in the fleet has identical hardware. It is best understood as a publicly discussed mobility feature of the current Beast.
Run-flat support is important in a protection vehicle because stopping to change a tire would create a vulnerable pause. Continuing to a secure location can preserve distance from a threat and give the protective team more options. It does not mean the car is invulnerable or that it can drive indefinitely after damage; the public description establishes the device’s purpose, not a range or speed capability.
A redundant auxiliary fuel pump
The same report identifies a redundant auxiliary fuel pump. If the primary fuel-delivery system fails, a backup pump can keep the engine supplied. This is a classic resilience measure: two critical paths are preferable to one when a vehicle must remain mobile under abnormal conditions.

Fixed, extended windows
The windows are designed not to open. Their extended shape supports the “parade limousine” role by giving crowds a view of the occupant while preserving a sealed passenger compartment. This is a visible security decision that also affects everyday use: the President cannot simply lower a window to speak with people alongside the road.
The public descriptions do not establish the glass construction, thickness, ballistic rating or chemical-protection performance. Those specifications are often repeated online, but they are not confirmed by the named sources here.
Heating, cooling and massage in the seats
Secret Service personnel also discussed built-in seat heating, cooling and massage functions. These features are not defensive systems, but they matter on long motorcade days and during ceremonies that require the occupant to remain in the vehicle for extended periods. Comfort equipment can support alertness and endurance without changing the limousine’s primary protective purpose.

The car is only one part of the protection system
Focusing on the limousine alone can create a misleading picture. John Bush, a retired Secret Service agent and former Special Agent in Charge of the Presidential Protective Division, described transportation protection as a coordinated team effort. The White House Historical Association says advance teams evaluate routes, coordinate safe houses, work with local police and arrange medical support.

- Medical readiness: Medical support is arranged as part of the movement plan rather than improvised after an emergency.
That layered approach explains why a single feature—such as run-flat support—cannot be treated as the whole answer to presidential security. The vehicle buys time and mobility; people, planning and surrounding assets determine how that time is used.
Bush summarized the professional mindset in a 2026 White House Historical Association interview: “When you’re driving, you don’t think about it being the President of the United States… You have a job to do, so you’re going to do the job.” His comment illustrates that the limousine is operated as part of a disciplined protective mission, not as a standalone gadget.
What “secret features” can—and cannot—be confirmed
The Secret Service has a clear boundary around operational information. In a statement reported by the Associated Press in January 2023, the agency said: “due to the need to maintain operational security, the U.S. Secret Service does not comment on the means, methods or resources used to conduct our protective operations.”
That statement does not prove or disprove every rumor about the car. It does mean that an unsourced list should not be presented as an official specification. The following subjects remain unconfirmed by the authoritative material used for this article:

Some of these capabilities may exist; public sources simply do not verify them. Treating a frequently repeated claim as fact can reveal more about internet folklore than about the actual vehicle.
How the presidential limousine changed over time
“The Beast” is a nickname for a particular era of presidential transport, not a name that describes every limousine used by a President. General Motors traces presidential use of Cadillacs back more than a century and identifies several distinct generations.

The historical numbers belong to the vehicles listed in the table. The 21.5-foot, 7,660-pound figures describe the 1938 convertibles, not the current limousine; the 454-cubic-inch engine describes the 1987 car, not today’s Beast. No current-generation weight or engine displacement is established by these sources.

Why old specifications should not be copied onto today’s Beast
Presidential vehicles are redesigned as requirements, technology and security practices change. A radio or generator documented on a 1938 convertible tells us how that car supported its era’s duties. It does not establish what is installed in a 2018-generation limousine. Likewise, the 2009 vehicle’s Cadillac DTS styling does not describe the CT6-inspired exterior now associated with the Beast.

When reading a claim about the car, check four things:
- Identify the generation. Is the statement about the 2001, 2009 or 2018-era vehicle, or about an older presidential car?
- Check who made the statement. A named Secret Service representative, a manufacturer history and an anonymous internet post do not carry the same evidentiary weight.
- Separate function from specification. “Run-flat device” explains a purpose; it does not reveal tire dimensions, speed limits or a guaranteed distance.
- Look for a date. A feature discussed in 2024 may describe the current generation, while an older article may concern a retired limousine.
What a passenger experiences versus what the public sees
From outside, the most obvious clues are the Cadillac-like shape, permanently closed windows and unusual proportions. Inside, the publicly described comfort systems show that the car is also a working environment. Heating, cooling and massage functions can reduce fatigue during long movements, while the sealed windows preserve a controlled passenger compartment.
What remains invisible is deliberate. Security depends partly on preventing adversaries from knowing how the vehicle detects, communicates or responds to threats. The absence of a public specification is therefore not evidence that the feature is absent; it is evidence that the government has chosen not to confirm it.
How to evaluate a new claim about The Beast
Online articles often combine details from several generations, mix reporter interpretation with direct testimony and repeat figures without dates. A reliable reading method is to classify each statement:
- Directly described: For example, a Secret Service representative discussing a run-flat device or auxiliary fuel pump in a dated public appearance.
- Manufacturer history: General Motors’ chronology and historical vehicle specifications.
- Protection context: The White House Historical Association’s account of advance work and motorcade coordination.
- Unverified claim: Any armor, weapon, sensor or performance figure lacking a named authoritative source.
This approach keeps the fascinating parts—the specialized chassis, redundant fuel delivery and ceremonial visibility—without turning speculation into fact.
The bottom line on the President’s car
The Beast is best understood as a custom mobility platform embedded in a much larger protective operation. Public sources confirm selected features that support movement, redundancy, controlled visibility and occupant comfort. They do not provide a complete technical specification, and the Secret Service expressly declines to discuss operational means and resources. The most accurate answer to “what is inside the President’s car?” is therefore two-part: a few purposeful features are publicly described, while the systems that would reveal how the vehicle defeats specific threats remain intentionally undisclosed.
