Inside Mr. Bean’s Garage: 10 Cars in Rowan Atkinson’s $15 Million Car Collection—What the Records Actually Show

Rowan Atkinson’s reported car collection includes a former McLaren F1, Aston Martin V8s, historic racers, rally cars and understated V8 sedans—but the $15 million total is not a verified current valuation.

Inside Mr. Bean’s garage, Rowan Atkinson’s reported $15 million car collection is best treated as a historical list, not a verified current inventory: the ten-car roster includes a former McLaren F1, Aston Martins, historic racers, rally cars and sleeper sedans, while the $15 million figure does not establish the present value of the entire collection.

British GQ’s July 2020 feature provides the clearest reputable ten-car roster, but the available reporting documents different ownership periods. Atkinson sold the McLaren F1 in 2015 and reportedly sold his Mercedes-Benz 500E again in 2018. The current status of several other cars has not been independently verified.

Key takeaways

  • British GQ’s July 2020 roster is the clearest reputable ten-car list associated with Rowan Atkinson, but it is not a verified August 2026 inventory.
  • Atkinson’s McLaren F1 was bought in 1997, crashed in 2011, and sold in 2015 for a reported £8 million.
  • The reported $15 million figure refers to the expected sale value of the McLaren F1 in a 2015 NPR report, not an audited current value for the entire collection.
  • Atkinson’s reported cars range from a carbon-fibre McLaren F1 and historic BMW 328 to understated Lancia and Mercedes V8 sedans.
  • The 1977 Aston Martin V8 Vantage is an additional important Atkinson car and should not be confused with his separate 1986 Aston Martin V8 Zagato.

What cars are in Rowan Atkinson’s car collection?

The most credible published Rowan Atkinson car collection list contains a McLaren F1, Aston Martin V8 Zagato, Ford Falcon Sprint, Bentley Mulsanne Birkin Edition, Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead, BMW 328, Lancia Delta HF Integrale, Lancia Thema 8.32, Mercedes-Benz 500E and Honda NSX. The list comes primarily from British GQ’s July 10, 2020 feature, and several cars were later sold or have no publicly verified current ownership status.

That distinction matters. The list is best understood as a historical record of cars owned, raced or associated with Atkinson, rather than proof that all ten cars remain in his garage. The McLaren F1 and Mercedes-Benz 500E are specifically documented as former cars, while the present status of several others has not been independently established.

Did Rowan Atkinson really own a McLaren F1?

Yes. Rowan Atkinson bought a dark burgundy McLaren F1 in 1997, reportedly using money from the first Mr. Bean film, and sold the car in 2015. The McLaren was not merely a celebrity garage ornament: Atkinson used it for ordinary journeys and described the driving experience in an AutoTrader interview by saying, “It’s a car that keeps you on your toes.”

The McLaren F1 has the clearest documented ownership timeline in the collection. The car spun on a wet road and struck a tree and lamppost in 2011, according to The Guardian’s report on the crash. The same reporting noted an earlier low-speed incident in 1999. AutoTrader later described the car as having travelled more than 65,000 kilometres and having been involved in two crashes before its sale.

British GQ reported that the 2015 sale brought £8 million and that the later repair work had produced a £910,000 insurance payout. Those figures describe Atkinson’s specific car and its repair history; they are not a current valuation of his wider collection.

How rare is the McLaren F1?

The McLaren F1 is rare by design. McLaren Automotive’s official model history says the F1 was conceived in 1988, realised in 1992, built around a carbon-fibre monocoque and produced in a limited run of 106 examples. McLaren’s official page also says auction examples have reached as much as $20.5 million, but that is the maximum reported value for an auction example—not the value of Atkinson’s particular car and not the value of his complete collection.

The F1’s appeal also comes from its engineering layout. The driver sits centrally, with one passenger seat on each side, giving the car a distinctive driving position. The carbon-fibre construction and unusually focused design explain why the F1 remains the collection’s strongest rarity and engineering story even though Atkinson no longer owns it.

Want a physical reminder of the centerpiece? A McLaren F1 model kit is the honest substitute for readers who cannot own a historic road car. LEGO’s Speed Champions McLaren Solus GT and McLaren F1 LM set includes a buildable F1 LM with a central driving seat and cooling ducts. It belongs to the McLaren F1 family, but it is not a replica of Atkinson’s exact burgundy road car.

How much is Rowan Atkinson’s car collection worth?

There is no verified current, audited total for Rowan Atkinson’s complete car collection. The $15 million figure in the headline should therefore be treated as a historical and potentially misleading shorthand, not as a confirmed August 2026 valuation.

Figure What it refers to Source and date What it does not prove
Approximately $15 million Expected sale value of Atkinson’s McLaren F1 in 2015 reporting 2015 NPR report, as described in the available research It does not value the complete collection
£8 million Reported 2015 sale price of Atkinson’s McLaren F1 British GQ, 2020 It is not a current price for an F1 or a collection total
Up to $20.5 million Highest auction example cited by McLaren’s official model history McLaren Automotive, current official page It is not the price of Atkinson’s specific F1
£220,000 Reported rebuild cost for Atkinson’s Aston Martin V8 Zagato British GQ, 2020 It is a repair cost, not the car’s value
£122,500 Reported auction sale price of the V8 Zagato British GQ, 2020 It is not a current valuation of the collection

The figures cannot be added together. They come from different years, currencies and valuation situations: an expected sale estimate, a reported transaction price, a maximum auction example and repair or resale figures. The defensible conclusion is that Atkinson has owned exceptionally valuable cars, while the complete collection’s current value remains unverified.

Which other cars are in the reported ten-car collection?

2. Aston Martin V8 Zagato

Atkinson’s reported 1986 Aston Martin V8 Zagato was a rare, Italian-styled V8 that British GQ described as uprated to 482 bhp. Atkinson crashed the car at a 2001 enthusiast track day at Croft Circuit, reportedly spent £220,000 rebuilding it, and later sold it at auction for £122,500. Aston Martin’s corporate history confirms that the V8 Vantage Zagato launched in 1986 as part of the marque’s long-running collaboration with Zagato.

The V8 Zagato is separate from Atkinson’s 1977 Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Treating the two cars as one Aston Martin would merge two different vehicles and distort the collection list.

3. Ford Falcon Sprint

The 1964 Ford Falcon Sprint shows why Atkinson’s motoring interests cannot be reduced to European supercars. British GQ reports that he raced the historic Ford and crashed it during the 2014 Goodwood Revival Shelby Cup race. The Guardian also identified a 1964 Ford Falcon among the cars Atkinson raced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Falcon is important for its motorsport role rather than for a luxury-car price tag. It represents American historic racing machinery in a garage otherwise known for British, German, Italian and Japanese engineering.

4. Bentley Mulsanne Birkin Edition

The 2014 Bentley Mulsanne Birkin Edition was included in British GQ’s Atkinson collection feature. The limited edition refers to Sir Henry “Tim” Birkin, one of the Bentley Boys, and its theme connects with Bentley’s Le Mans heritage. Atkinson also played Birkin in the 1995 film Full Throttle.

The Birkin connection explains why this Bentley fits Atkinson’s collection, but the historical theme should not be mistaken for evidence of a current market valuation or confirmed present ownership.

5. Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead

British GQ reported that Atkinson had Rolls-Royce install an experimental nine-litre V16 engine in his 2011 Phantom Drophead. The detail is striking because it suggests an interest in what sits beneath the luxury bodywork, not merely in the car’s status or appearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The nine-litre V16 detail should remain attributed to magazine reporting rather than being presented as a standard factory specification for every Phantom Drophead or as an independently verified current modification.

6. BMW 328

The 1939 BMW 328 is the collection’s pre-war sports-car representative. British GQ associated Atkinson with the car and connected its historical significance with the Mille Miglia. The available research does not establish the BMW’s present ownership status through a current official source, so “reported in the collection” is more accurate than “currently owned.”

7. Lancia Delta HF Integrale

Atkinson reportedly took delivery of a 16-valve 1989 Lancia Delta HF Integrale after spending two years with the eight-valve predecessor. The Delta brings rally-bred performance into the collection and represents a different kind of speed from the McLaren F1: practical, point-to-point pace in a compact hatchback.

Atkinson captured that appeal in a Car magazine column: “I can’t imagine any car getting you from P to Q faster than this one.” The quote explains why the Delta belongs in the story even though it lacks the visual drama and price profile of the McLaren.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Lancia Thema 8.32

The Lancia Thema 8.32 is the collection’s classic sleeper. British GQ described Atkinson’s car as a discreet deep-red sedan with wood trim and brown cloth seats, powered by a Ferrari-derived 32-valve V8 from the Ferrari 328.

The Thema is best compared with the Mercedes-Benz 500E, not with the McLaren F1 or V8 Zagato. Both sedans conceal unusual performance under restrained styling, which is one of the clearest recurring themes in Atkinson’s reported choices.

9. Mercedes-Benz 500E

Atkinson’s reported silver 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E had a 5.0-litre V8, half-leather upholstery and blue-check cloth inserts. British GQ says Atkinson sold the car in 1994, bought it back in 2017 and sold it again a year later; a separate 2019 motoring report also recorded the car’s association with him and its auction preparation.

The 500E is therefore a documented former Atkinson car, not a vehicle that should be described as still sitting in his garage. Its buyback history does, however, show that the car had lasting personal appeal beyond its understated appearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Honda NSX

British GQ included a 2002 Honda NSX in the reported collection and presented the Japanese sports car as an alternative to a Ferrari. The NSX’s engineering reputation and development history, including the well-known association with Ayrton Senna, make it a natural fit for an enthusiast who values handling and mechanical character.

The Senna connection concerns the NSX’s development history. It does not mean that the Honda in Atkinson’s reported collection was owned or driven by Senna.

What Aston Martin did Mr. Bean drive?

The most important Aston Martin associated with Rowan Atkinson is a 1977 Aston Martin V8 Vantage, which British GQ called his first “proper” car. Atkinson reportedly bought the car in 1984, and the magazine described it as having a 5.3-litre V8 producing 389 bhp. The car also appeared in Johnny English Strikes Again.

The 1977 V8 Vantage is an additional car beyond the commonly cited ten-car roster. In a 2018 AMA, Atkinson named a “1970’s Aston Martin Vantage” among his favourite cars, alongside the McLaren F1 and a 1960s Ford Falcon or Ford Mustang. The Aston Martin therefore has a stronger Atkinson-specific ownership and preference history than a casual “Mr. Bean cars” list suggests.

Why does Rowan Atkinson collect unusual cars?

Atkinson’s reported car history points to an enthusiast’s garage rather than a simple display of expensive badges. The collection combines hypercar engineering, historic racing, rally performance, understated V8 sedans and cars with personal or film connections.

In a 2022 British GQ interview, Atkinson said, “Cars are my great obsession,” and added, “I find them a very valuable escape.” Those comments support the pattern visible in the vehicles: the McLaren F1’s demanding engineering, the Delta’s rally-bred efficiency, the Thema’s hidden Ferrari-derived V8 and the 500E’s discreet performance all reward interest in how a car feels and works.

Atkinson’s historic racing activity reinforces that interpretation. The Ford Falcon Sprint, BMW 328 and other competition-related cars make motorsport part of the story, while the Aston Martin V8 Vantage and Honda NSX show that the collection also reflects personal taste and engineering curiosity.

What happened to Rowan Atkinson’s McLaren F1?

Rowan Atkinson’s McLaren F1 survived two reported crashes, including a serious 2011 wet-road accident, was repaired and eventually sold in 2015. British GQ reported a £910,000 insurance payout connected with the later repairs and an £8 million sale price in 2015.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The sequence is unusual for a car of such value because Atkinson used the F1 rather than treating it as an untouchable investment. His comment that the car “keeps you on your toes” captures both the driving challenge and the risk of using a high-performance car in normal life. The key current-status answer is straightforward: the F1 is a former Atkinson car.

What is the best way to understand the collection?

The collection makes more sense when its cars are grouped by character rather than ranked only by price.

Collection theme Best examples What the cars show
Rarity McLaren F1, BMW 328, Aston Martin V8 Zagato Atkinson’s interest in historically important and unusually scarce machinery
Engineering character McLaren F1, Lancia Thema 8.32, Mercedes-Benz 500E A preference for distinctive mechanical solutions, from carbon-fibre construction to powerful V8 sedans
Motorsport connection Ford Falcon Sprint, BMW 328, Lancia Delta, V8 Zagato A garage connected to historic racing, rallying and track use
Sleeper appeal Lancia Thema 8.32, Mercedes-Benz 500E Performance that is deliberately less conspicuous than an exotic supercar
Personal provenance 1977 Aston Martin V8 Vantage, McLaren F1 Cars tied to Atkinson’s own history, preferences and public comments

What should readers take away from the $15 million claim?

The accurate answer is that Rowan Atkinson has been associated with an extraordinary group of cars, but the available evidence does not verify a current $15 million collection total. The McLaren F1 alone generated million-pound and multimillion-dollar valuation claims in different years, while other cars have documented sales, repair costs or only historical ownership associations.

The strongest version of the story is therefore not “Mr. Bean owns ten cars worth $15 million.” The stronger and more accurate version is that Rowan Atkinson’s documented motoring identity includes a former McLaren F1, a long-held Aston Martin V8 Vantage, historic racers, discreet V8 sedans and unusual engineering choices—and that current ownership is unevenly documented.

Further reading and collecting context

Readers looking beyond the celebrity angle can use a McLaren F1 history book, classic-car collection book or automotive biography for broader context, but no authoritative book documenting Atkinson’s complete current garage was verified in the available research. Readers interested in buying or valuing comparable historic cars should also treat auction records and specialist valuation services as separate research sources, because a celebrity association does not establish a current market price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Rowan Atkinson still own the McLaren F1?

No. Rowan Atkinson’s McLaren F1 was sold in 2015 for a reported £8 million, so it should be described as a former Atkinson car rather than a car still in his garage.

How much is Rowan Atkinson’s car collection worth?

The $15 million figure is not a verified current value for Rowan Atkinson’s complete collection. Available reporting used approximately $15 million as an expected 2015 sale value for the McLaren F1 alone, while other sources report different prices, currencies and valuation contexts.

What Aston Martin did Rowan Atkinson own?

The principal Aston Martin associated with Atkinson is a 1977 Aston Martin V8 Vantage, reportedly bought in 1984. That car is separate from his reported 1986 Aston Martin V8 Zagato, which was later sold at auction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is in Rowan Atkinson’s car collection?

The reported ten-car list includes the McLaren F1, Aston Martin V8 Zagato, Ford Falcon Sprint, Bentley Mulsanne Birkin Edition, Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead, BMW 328, Lancia Delta HF Integrale, Lancia Thema 8.32, Mercedes-Benz 500E and Honda NSX.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Rowan Atkinson’s best-documented ten-car roster includes the McLaren F1, Aston Martin V8 Zagato, Ford Falcon Sprint, Bentley Mulsanne Birkin Edition, Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead, BMW 328, Lancia Delta HF Integrale, Lancia Thema 8.32, Mercedes-Benz 500E and Honda NSX. The McLaren F1 and 500E were sold, several other cars have unverified current status, and the $15 million figure is not an audited valuation of his present collection.
