The safest infotainment setup is the one you finish while parked: enter the destination, choose audio, silence nonessential phone alerts, simplify the display, and put the phone out of reach. Once moving, avoid typing, scrolling, browsing, or entering a destination. If a control needs more than a brief, familiar command, pull over somewhere safe and park before using it.
No single menu path or setting works across every vehicle, model year, phone, or software version. Use the vehicle and phone manuals for the exact labels and availability, and treat voice control or phone projection as convenience features—not as permission to stop paying attention to traffic.

Why infotainment changes can improve safety
Infotainment work combines several kinds of distraction. Looking at a screen is visual distraction; tapping, typing, or reaching is manual distraction; and planning a route, searching for a song, or following a complicated conversation can be cognitive distraction. A task that seems quick while parked can take much longer when traffic, weather, passengers, or an unfamiliar road demand attention.

That figure covers distracted driving broadly, not infotainment alone. A separate NHTSA publication, Countermeasures That Work, estimated 3,522 distracted-driving fatalities in 2021. Those figures come from different years and source contexts; they should not be treated as a directly comparable trend line.

NHTSA describes common examples as “fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system.” The practical goal is therefore not to find a magic setting that eliminates distraction. It is to reduce how often a driver must look, reach, decide, or respond after the vehicle is moving.
Use this rule throughout setup: anything that requires reading, composing, searching, or multiple selections belongs in the parked phase. A simple control that you can operate without taking your eyes from the road may still create mental distraction, so keep the task short and stop if traffic becomes complex.
Complete this setup before you move
Allow a few minutes at the start of a trip for the tasks below. Do them in a driveway, parking space, or other legal place where the vehicle is stationary, not at a red light or while rolling slowly.

- Secure the phone. Mount it only where it does not block the road view, gauges, or safety systems. If seeing the phone tempts you to interact with it, place it in a closed compartment, bag, or other location that you cannot reach easily.
- Choose the route. Enter the complete destination and review the initial route while parked. Add planned stops before departure rather than searching for them on the road.
- Select audio. Start the playlist, station, podcast, or audiobook you expect to use. Set a comfortable volume and learn the location of the vehicle’s physical volume control or steering-wheel switch.
- Set phone notification controls. Turn on Do Not Disturb, an available driving mode, or notification silencing. Check which calls, messages, or emergency alerts the mode still allows; behavior varies by phone and operating-system version.
- Remove unnecessary vehicle prompts. If the vehicle offers configurable pop-ups, alert sounds, or app notifications, disable only those you do not need. Keep warnings and information needed for safe vehicle operation enabled.
- Choose a simple display. Select the screen that shows only useful information, such as the current route, next turn, or audio title. Avoid decorative widgets, scrolling feeds, and screens that require repeated navigation.
- Connect projection if you use it. Pair the phone or connect it by cable while parked, confirm that audio and directions work, and close apps you will not need.
- Check the controls. Locate volume, mute, next-track, voice-command, and navigation-cancel controls before leaving. Knowing a control’s position is safer than searching for it later.
Reduce phone prompts before departure
Do Not Disturb and driving modes
Use the phone’s Do Not Disturb or driving mode before selecting Drive. Depending on the device, the mode may silence banners, hide message previews, send an automatic reply, or restrict selected apps. It may still permit calls, navigation announcements, or emergency notifications. Verify the actual behavior in the phone’s settings instead of assuming that every alert is blocked.
NHTSA’s Put the Phone Away or Pay campaign also suggests putting the phone away to remove temptation. A mode that silences a banner cannot prevent you from unlocking the phone manually, so physical distance is an important second layer.
Vehicle notifications
Many systems can display incoming messages, calendar reminders, app alerts, or connected-service prompts. The names and controls differ by manufacturer and trim. In the vehicle’s infotainment or phone-connection settings, look for options such as notification previews, message readout, app permissions, or alert sounds. Turn off prompts that are not needed for the trip, but do not disable safety-critical vehicle warnings.
Passengers and shared phones
Tell passengers that the driver will not handle messages or search for content while moving. A passenger can manage entertainment or navigation only when doing so does not distract the driver with a conversation or screen. If a passenger’s phone is connected, apply the same notification discipline to it.
Make navigation a parked task
Destination entry is one of the clearest examples of a task that belongs before movement. NHTSA’s in-vehicle device guidance notes that a destination can be entered while the vehicle is stationary. Search the address, select the correct result, inspect the route, and start guidance before shifting into motion.

Prepare likely changes in advance: add a known fuel, charging, rest, or meeting stop; download an offline map if your navigation app supports it; and confirm that spoken directions are audible over the chosen audio. Do not assume that a large map or a head-up display makes route editing safe. A driver can still become cognitively absorbed in comparing routes or reading details.
If you miss a turn, let the system recalculate. Do not pick up the phone, type a new destination, or browse points of interest. If the route needs a deliberate change, take the next safe opportunity to leave traffic, park legally, and make the adjustment.
Keep audio controls simple
Choose audio before departure and avoid searching through long libraries while driving. A short, familiar action—such as pressing a steering-wheel next-track button—usually demands less visual and manual interaction than opening an app and scrolling. Even that familiar action should wait if traffic, pedestrians, lane changes, or weather require your full attention.
Set volume while stationary. Very loud audio can mask horns, sirens, tire noise, or spoken warnings; very quiet audio may encourage repeated adjustments. If the system has separate navigation-volume controls, set them while parked so a turn instruction does not surprise you or become impossible to hear.
Disable autoplay, promotional content, or repeated prompts when your vehicle or app allows it. The objective is a stable, predictable audio environment, not a completely silent cabin. Keep the mute control accessible for situations that require immediate listening.
Use the display for only necessary information
A less distracting screen is not necessarily the one with the fewest pixels. It is the one that communicates the needed information quickly and does not invite exploration. Prefer a fixed navigation view, a current audio title, or a simple vehicle-status page over animated home screens, news feeds, or multi-panel dashboards.

Do not attempt to configure screen brightness, themes, widget layouts, or notification categories in motion. Make those changes at home or while parked. If glare or darkness makes the display hard to read, stop in a safe location before adjusting it; repeatedly squinting or leaning toward the screen creates another visual demand.

Keep the phone and vehicle display within the manufacturer’s permitted mounting and visibility areas. A mount that blocks a windshield, instrument cluster, camera, or airbag deployment zone is not a safe solution, even if it makes the screen easier to see.
Voice commands and phone projection: useful, but limited
Voice control
NHTSA’s Visual-Manual Driver Distraction Guidelines distinguish visual-manual interaction from auditory-vocal interaction. That distinction explains why a short spoken command can reduce reaching and screen glances compared with typing. It does not prove that every voice task is safe or free of cognitive distraction.
Use voice for simple, familiar requests such as starting navigation to a known destination, changing the volume, or calling a contact when conditions permit. Avoid composing long messages, dictating complicated addresses, browsing search results, or holding a back-and-forth conversation with the system. If recognition fails, do not keep trying while moving; stop and use the screen while parked.
Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and similar projection
Phone projection can place selected navigation, communication, and audio functions on a vehicle display, but it does not remove the need to focus on driving. Availability, app support, wireless pairing, and permitted controls vary by phone, vehicle, model year, and software version.

When an adjustment becomes necessary
Use a three-question decision check:
- Does the task require reading, typing, scrolling, or selecting among several options?
- Could it wait until the destination or a safe stopping place?
- Would an error create a navigation, communication, or vehicle-control problem?
If the answer to any of these points raises concern, leave the task alone until parked. NHTSA states: “If you have to text, pull over to a safe location and park your car — only then should you read or send the text message.” That rule also fits a long navigation search, a software-setting change, or troubleshooting a failed connection.
Do not treat a traffic light, shoulder, or emergency lane as automatically safe for interaction. Choose a legal, stable stopping place away from moving traffic, secure the vehicle, and then use the screen. If no safe place is available, continue to a suitable location or ask a passenger to handle the task without involving the driver.
Find the exact controls for your vehicle and phone
There is no universal infotainment menu path. The same function may be labeled Sound, Audio, Notifications, Phone Projection, Connections, Driver Assistance, or something else, and some trims do not include it at all. Model year, regional software, subscription status, and phone version can change the available options.
- Open the vehicle owner’s manual and find the infotainment, audio, phone, or connected-services section.
- Search the index for terms such as notification, message, projection, voice recognition, display, volume, and Do Not Disturb.
- Read the safety warnings before changing a setting, and perform the procedure only while parked.
- Use the phone maker’s current instructions for driving mode, Do Not Disturb, notification previews, and Bluetooth or projection pairing.
- Test the result in the parked vehicle: confirm that navigation speaks, desired calls can reach you, unwanted previews stay hidden, and audio controls work without searching.
The Kia quick guide hosted by NHTSA gives a useful reminder for its own system: “ALWAYS CHECK THE OWNER’S MANUAL FOR COMPLETE OPERATING INFORMATION AND SAFETY WARNINGS.” Treat the guide’s menu steps as Kia-specific examples, not directions for every vehicle. You can read that guide at NHTSA’s hosted Kia audio-system quick guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing among available infotainment features
When a vehicle offers several ways to perform the same function, compare them by the interaction they demand rather than by how advanced they sound.
| Option | Potential safety advantage | Limit to remember | Best time to configure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical or steering-wheel audio control | Can reduce reaching toward a central screen for familiar volume or track changes. | Still diverts attention if you search for the control or use it during a demanding traffic situation. | Learn its location while parked. |
| Voice command | May reduce visual and manual interaction for a short, known request. | Recognition errors and complex conversations can create cognitive distraction. | Set up contacts, permissions, and wake commands while parked. |
| Phone projection | Can limit the display to supported navigation, communication, and audio functions. | Support and controls differ by vehicle, phone, app, and connection type. | Pair and test before departure. |
| Do Not Disturb or driving mode | Can reduce incoming banners, sounds, and message temptation. | It may allow selected calls or alerts and cannot stop deliberate phone use. | Enable before selecting Drive. |
| Full touchscreen menus | May provide access to settings and a broad range of functions. | Typing, scrolling, and visual searching are interaction-heavy. | Use only while parked. |
Troubleshooting common problems without adding risk
Navigation is silent
Do not stare at the map while moving. At the next safe stop, check whether guidance is muted, whether the navigation volume is separate from media volume, whether the correct audio source is selected, and whether the phone or vehicle is connected to the intended output.

Notifications still appear
Park before changing settings. Check both the phone’s driving mode and the vehicle’s connected-phone notification permissions. An app may have its own alert setting, and emergency or favorite-contact exceptions may remain enabled by design.

Continue using the road rather than repeatedly reconnecting. When parked, confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi requirements, restart the connection, update software only according to the manufacturers’ instructions, and test a compatible wired connection if the vehicle supports one. Do not assume a cable is universally compatible or safer without verifying the vehicle and phone requirements.
The screen is distracting even after setup
Reduce the number of displayed widgets or alerts if the system permits, switch to a simpler supported view, and move the phone out of sight. If the system still demands frequent attention, rely on audio guidance and stop for any task that cannot be completed with a brief, familiar control.
A repeatable pre-trip routine
Before each unfamiliar or longer trip, repeat the same sequence: phone away or secured, driving mode enabled, destination and stops entered, route reviewed, audio selected, volume checked, and the display set to a simple useful view. Confirm that passengers know the driver will not handle messages or searches in motion.
On short familiar trips, do not skip the basics merely because the route is routine. A new notification, software update, rental vehicle, borrowed phone, or passenger request can change the amount of attention the system demands. If the vehicle, phone, or app behaves differently than expected, treat that difference as a reason to stop and verify the setting rather than experiment while driving.
Legal and personal limits
Hands-free and texting laws differ by jurisdiction, and the available information here does not establish the current law everywhere. Follow the rules where you drive, but remember that legal does not necessarily mean distraction-free. A permitted voice interaction can still overload attention, and a prohibited handheld action remains unsafe even if it lasts only a few seconds.
No individual setting guarantees crash prevention. The strongest protection is a parked setup, a phone that is difficult to reach, minimal prompts, simple controls, and a willingness to stop whenever a task becomes complicated.
