In India, “solar rickshaw” can mean either an electric rickshaw charged with solar electricity at a separate station or one carrying photovoltaic panels. Those are different setups. India has a large e-rickshaw sector and documented examples of solar charging, but the available figures do not establish how many rickshaws use solar power or whether solar charging is cheaper nationwide.
What does “solar rickshaw” mean?
The term describes two distinct arrangements:
- Solar-powered charging: Solar panels at a separate charging station generate electricity used to charge an e-rickshaw’s battery. The vehicle need not carry any panels.
- Vehicle-mounted solar: Photovoltaic panels are fitted to the rickshaw and contribute electricity to its battery or electrical system. The panel, charge controller, battery, charger and vehicle wiring must be designed to work together.
Both are forms of electric rickshaw, but only the second carries solar panels. The National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) handbook raises this distinction while comparing solar-powered and battery-powered e-rickshaws: NIUA e-rickshaw handbook.
How common are solar rickshaws in India?
There is no established nationwide count of solar-powered rickshaws in the cited sources. Registration figures describe e-rickshaws generally, not solar adoption. WRI India reported more than 18.1 lakh e-rickshaw registrations in the Vahan database as of November 2024; that number should not be read as a count of solar vehicles. WRI also reported an estimate of about 60 million people using e-rickshaws daily in India in a technical note dated 17 January 2025. That is an estimate for e-rickshaw users, not specifically solar-rickshaw passengers. See WRI India’s technical note on electric three-wheelers.
Those figures show the scale of the broader e-rickshaw sector, not the prevalence of solar charging or vehicle-mounted panels. A documented pilot or a large registration total cannot establish nationwide solar adoption.

How can solar electricity charge an e-rickshaw?
Solar charging stations
Solar panels can generate electricity at a charging station, where the power may be used to charge vehicles directly or stored for later use. A Government of India Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser technology compendium describes BATX Energies’ “Solarized 2nd Life EV Charging Station,” a pilot with DRIIV in collaboration with IIT Delhi. The compendium reports 6.6 kWp of solar capacity and battery storage of 20–100 kWh, and says the system can charge e-rickshaws, two-wheelers and electric cars. These are specifications for that pilot, not a national standard or evidence of widespread deployment: Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser technology compendium.
Panels fitted to a rickshaw
A panel mounted on a vehicle is another possible design, but the sources do not establish a universal panel specification or show that a generic panel can supply the energy a particular route requires. A panel alone is not a complete charging system. Before considering a retrofit, an operator would need to verify compatibility among the panel, charge controller, battery, charger and vehicle electrical design; the cited sources do not provide a universal safe retrofit recipe.
Is solar charging better than ordinary grid charging?
There is no current, nationally representative cost-and-performance comparison in the cited sources that establishes one option as better for Indian cities or operators. The answer depends on the system and local operating conditions, including:
- Configuration: whether solar generation is at a shared station or mounted on each vehicle.
- Compatibility: whether the charging equipment suits the vehicle’s battery and electrical system.
- Access and schedule: whether a driver can reach the solar charging point when needed and whether charging fits operating hours.
- Backup charging: whether another dependable charging option is available when solar generation or stored energy is insufficient.
- Total system cost: the cost of the vehicle, charging equipment, any storage and installation—not just the price of a panel.
Without comparable costs, route-specific energy requirements and charging-access data, claims of a general savings amount, range improvement or payback period would be unsupported.

PM E-DRIVE incentives
The Ministry of Heavy Industries’ PM E-DRIVE scheme lists registered e-rickshaws/e-carts and L5 electric three-wheelers among supported categories. Its portal says, “Only those e-3Ws equipped with advanced batteries will qualify for the demand incentive.” The cited scheme material describes an e-mobility incentive, not a solar-specific grant. Eligibility, rates and dates can change, so check the PM E-DRIVE portal for current terms before relying on an incentive.
Charging-infrastructure tariffs
A PIB reply records Ministry of Power charging-infrastructure guidelines dated 17 September 2024. It describes a single-part tariff capped at the average cost of supply through 31 March 2028, with a 30% discount during solar hours and a 30% surcharge outside solar hours. These are charging-tariff provisions, not a direct subsidy for buying a solar rickshaw. Check current government notices for any changes: PIB reply on EV charging infrastructure.
Scheme incentives, tariff provisions, vehicle registrations and solar deployment are separate measures. None should be used as a proxy for how many solar-powered rickshaws are operating.

A Parliamentary committee report carried by PIB on 24 March 2026 said that, as of 31 January 2026, PM E-DRIVE had incentivized 3,602 e-rickshaws/e-carts against a revised target of 39,034. The committee also estimated that approximately 4.75 lakh e-rickshaws were operating without certification, registration or insurance. The first figure measures scheme incentives, not total registrations or solar adoption; the second is the committee’s estimate, not an independently verified census. What should buyers and operators check?
For a vehicle or charging project, evaluate the full system rather than treating “solar” as a standalone feature:
- Identify the design: confirm whether the proposal is a solar-powered charging station or panels mounted on the vehicle.
- Check electrical compatibility: confirm that the battery, charger, controller and vehicle system are designed to work together. Do not assume a panel kit will safely fit any e-rickshaw.
- Match charging to operations: assess where and when the vehicle can charge, the energy required for its route and what backup charging is available.
- Compare full costs: include any station, storage, installation and charging equipment alongside the vehicle, rather than comparing a panel price with ordinary charging costs.
- Verify incentives separately: consult current PM E-DRIVE terms for vehicle eligibility; the cited material does not establish a solar-specific purchaser subsidy.
WRI India discusses lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries alongside emerging aluminum-air, sodium-ion and zinc-based technologies. It says commercialization and ecosystem development for the newer chemistries are still a few years away. That discussion is not evidence that a particular emerging battery is ready or suitable for a buyer’s vehicle: WRI India’s battery and e-3W overview.
