Nissan is the automaker and parent company; INFINITI is a distinct brand in its portfolio, positioned for luxury vehicles and experiences. They are related, but the names do not refer to the same brand.
How Infiniti and Nissan are related
Nissan Motor Corporation owns and operates multiple automotive brands. Its Our Brands page identifies INFINITI as its premium brand and describes its focus as modern Japanese luxury. In plain terms, Nissan is the corporation and automaker; INFINITI is one of the brands it sells.
That brand distinction does not, by itself, establish that every INFINITI vehicle has wholly separate engineering or components from every Nissan vehicle. A comparison of platforms, engines, equipment, or other specifications needs to be made between particular models and model years.
Why Nissan created Infiniti
INFINITI’s official history says Nissan formed a group to develop a performance luxury vehicle brand. INFINITI says it was announced in 1989 and launched in the United States at 51 dealers, initially with the Q45 sedan and M30 coupe.

What the premium positioning means
Nissan describes INFINITI as a premium brand, while its portfolio strategy says its ambition is to deliver distinctive driving experiences in the premium market. These statements explain how Nissan positions the brand; they are not independent evidence that every INFINITI is better equipped, more reliable, or mechanically unrelated to a Nissan.
