Neither is the better bagger for every rider. On the official U.S. 2025 specifications, the Harley-Davidson Street Glide has higher published engine output, a larger display, a larger fuel tank and a higher starting price. The Indian Chieftain starts lower and includes a power windshield; Indian also describes its locking saddlebags as providing 18-plus gallons of storage. Both are listed at 811 pounds in running order. Treat these as manufacturer claims, not results from a controlled road test: your choice should turn on budget, preferred controls, luggage needs and a test ride.

Which engine suits you?
Harley lists higher peak figures: 130 lb-ft and 105 hp for the Milwaukee-Eight 117, compared with Indian’s 119 lb-ft for the Thunderstroke 111. Those numbers come from separate manufacturer specifications, not a controlled test, so they do not establish how the bikes feel in every riding situation. Torque peaks at different engine speeds, too: 3,250 rpm for the Harley and 3,000 rpm for the Indian. Ride both if throttle response and character are central to your decision.
How do their weight, fuel and touring features compare?
Weight and handling
Both official spec pages list 811 lb in running order. Matching published weight does not mean they will feel identical at low speed: balance, rider fit, surface and technique all affect maneuvering. If you have tight parking, a sloped driveway or frequent low-speed turns, try those situations during a test ride where practical.

Fuel capacity and economy
The Street Glide has a listed 6-gallon tank and a manufacturer-estimated 44 mpg city/highway figure; the Chieftain’s listed tank is 5.5 gallons. Do not treat the Harley estimate as guaranteed consumption or calculate a dependable real-world range from these figures alone. Riding conditions and fuel use matter, so plan around your own experience and refueling options.
Storage
Indian’s 18-plus-gallon claim is for weatherproof locking saddlebag storage, while Harley publishes luggage volume in cubic feet. Because the units and stated measurement conventions differ, the figures do not prove which bike carries more. If you travel with a particular helmet, luggage or passenger gear, check its fit in each bike’s actual bags.

Which bike has the better technology and standard features?
The Street Glide’s listed touchscreen is 12.3 inches, compared with the Chieftain’s 7-inch RIDE COMMAND display. Harley specifies a 200-watt, four-channel amplifier; Indian lists 100-watt audio. The larger published figures may matter if screen size or audio output is high on your list, but they do not tell you which interface you will prefer. Try the controls and screen visibility from the riding position.
Indian lists a power windshield, cruise control, keyless ignition, selectable ride modes and ABS. Harley lists three pre-programmed ride modes plus a customizable mode, rider safety enhancements and hand-adjustable rear shocks. Confirm the equipment on the particular trim and in your market; do not assume every feature carries over unchanged across versions.

Which one is the better buy?
Choose the Street Glide if
- You prioritize the higher published torque and horsepower figures.
- You prefer its larger touchscreen or specified higher-output audio system.
- A larger listed fuel tank, Harley’s specified safety features or hand-adjustable rear shocks matter to you.
Choose the Chieftain if
- The lower listed starting U.S. MSRP is a priority.
- You want a power windshield among the listed standard conveniences.
- Indian’s stated locking saddlebag capacity appeals to you, and the bags fit your gear in person.
Neither specification page establishes which bike is more comfortable, more reliable or less expensive to own over time. A direct test ride and comparable local quotes for similarly equipped motorcycles are the most useful ways to settle those questions.
