An Indian Motorcycle warning light is not automatically an emergency, but some lamps require you to stop the engine. Treat low oil pressure and engine overtemperature as stop-now warnings. A check-engine lamp that remains on while riding needs prompt diagnosis, while an ABS lamp can be a normal start-up status until the motorcycle exceeds the system’s activation speed on certain models.
Meanings vary by model year, trim and gauge. The procedures below are limited to the model groups identified in Indian Motorcycle’s published gauge guides. Identify your exact motorcycle and display first, then use its owner’s manual for the final definition and action.

Start by identifying the motorcycle and gauge
Indian Motorcycle has used different instrument clusters and diagnostic menus across its range. A symbol that is normal during a start-up self-check on one model may indicate a fault on another. Record the model, model year, trim and gauge type before interpreting a lamp.

There is no complete year-by-year indicator chart for every model and trim here. A 2020-plus Challenger, for example, has its own pre-ride inspection instructions; follow that motorcycle’s manual rather than borrowing a Scout or FTR interpretation.

What to do when a lamp appears
- Control the motorcycle first. If the symbol suggests low oil pressure, overheating or another condition that can damage the engine or affect control, reduce speed and pull over where it is safe. Follow any stop instruction in the owner’s manual.
- Observe the exact display. Note the symbol, wording, color and whether it is steady or flashing. A photograph taken after you are safely stopped can preserve information that may disappear after cycling the ignition.
- Decide whether it is a start-up status. Some lamps remain on until a system activates as the motorcycle moves. Others should go out after the engine starts. Do not judge a lamp by color alone.
- Perform only the checks the manual permits. Typical checks include oil or coolant level, radiator blockage, tire pressure and accessory loads. Do not remove parts or continue riding to “see if it clears” when the manual calls for stopping.
- Arrange diagnosis for a persistent warning. A running check-engine light, an unresolved ABS fault, a charging warning or a lamp that remains after the specified check should be reported to an authorized Indian Motorcycle dealer. Clearing a message does not repair its cause.
Low oil-pressure light: stop and check the oil
The low oil-pressure lamp means pressure has fallen below a safe operating pressure while the engine is running. Indian Motorcycle’s guidance for the covered Scouts and older clusters is clear when the lamp appears above idle: stop the engine as soon as safely possible and check the oil level.
If the oil level is low
Park on the level surface and use the checking procedure, oil grade and fill limits in your model’s manual. Do not overfill. After correcting the level as directed, restart only when it is safe and verify whether the lamp goes out.
If the level is correct but the lamp remains
Stop the engine immediately and contact an Indian Motorcycle dealer. A correct level does not prove that pressure is adequate; continuing to run the engine can turn a pressure fault into major engine damage. During the pre-ride check on a covered 2025-and-newer Scout, the oil-pressure light should not remain illuminated after starting.

On the 2025-and-newer Scout, the overtemperature warning calls for stopping the engine as soon as safely possible. The 2019–2024 FTR uses a related “HOt” display and gives similar stop-and-check guidance. These instructions are model-specific, so use your own manual for other motorcycles.

Checks listed for the covered models
- Stop in a safe location and switch the engine off as directed.
- Check the coolant level using the procedure and safety precautions in the manual. Hot coolant can cause serious burns.
- Inspect the radiator area for mud, leaves or other debris blocking airflow. Do not touch hot components.
- Check whether the cooling fan operates when the motorcycle’s conditions call for it; keep hands and clothing clear.
After the motorcycle has been checked and is safe to restart, observe the warning. If it remains after restarting, stop the engine immediately. Do not keep riding because the motorcycle still feels powerful or the temperature warning briefly disappears.
Check-engine light: retrieve information, then get diagnosis
A check-engine lamp can illuminate after abnormal sensor or engine operation. The 2025-and-newer Scout guide also notes that a tilt sensor shutdown can leave the lamp on. A lamp that stays illuminated while the motorcycle is operating warrants prompt dealer attention, even if the motorcycle seems to run normally.
2019–2024 FTR code retrieval
The FTR guide provides a model-specific sequence:
- Use the right-hand trigger switch until the display shows Ck ENG.
- Hold the trigger to enter the diagnostic display.
- Record the code number, Suspect Parameter Number (SPN) and Failure Mode Indicator (FMI).
- Give those details to a dealer for code interpretation and diagnosis.
Do not assume this trigger sequence exists on a Scout, Chief, Challenger or another FTR year. Some gauges allow the rider to retrieve codes, but the code itself is not a repair instruction. Avoid repeatedly clearing the lamp or disconnecting the battery to hide it.
ABS lamp: normal activation versus a fault
On the cited models, the ABS-not-activated lamp can remain on until the motorcycle travels faster than 6 mph (10 km/h), when the system activates. While the lamp is illuminated, anti-lock braking is unavailable, but conventional braking remains available. Ride cautiously during this start-up phase and allow the system to complete its check.

If the lamp stays on after the motorcycle has exceeded the activation speed, or the display identifies an ABS fault, consult the exact manual and arrange service. Do not interpret a continuously lit lamp as proof that anti-lock protection is working.
Battery-voltage warning: understand LO, OV and ERROR
On the 2025-and-newer Scout display, the battery-voltage lamp can indicate voltage that is too low, too high or a charging-system fault. Switch off nonessential electrical accessories and verify that the charging system is operating correctly according to the manual.

A voltage warning can reflect the battery, wiring, regulator or charging system. Avoid long rides with a persistent warning because the motorcycle may eventually lose electrical power or fail to restart.

On the Vintage, Springfield and model-year-2020-and-older Chief cluster covered by the published guide, the TPMS lamp illuminates for low tire pressure. It can appear with the low-battery-voltage indicator when a TPMS sensor battery is low and service is needed.

The lamp alone does not establish a pressure number for every model. Stop safely, inspect the tires and measure pressure with a suitable gauge using the values and cold-tire procedure in your owner’s manual. A tire that looks inflated can still be below specification, and a sensor warning can require service even after pressure is corrected.
Traction-control indicator on the 2025-and-newer Scout
The Scout traction-control fault indicator remains lit until the system activates above 6 mph (10 km/h). It flashes while the system is actively limiting rear-wheel slip. It remains on when traction control has been disabled and also stays on when a fault condition exists.
Use the display state and the manual to distinguish intentional deactivation from a malfunction. If the lamp remains on unexpectedly, restore the system only as the manual permits and arrange service before relying on traction control in low-grip conditions.

Status lamps that are not usually faults
Turn signals and hazards
On the 2025-and-newer Scout overview, each arrow flashes with its corresponding turn signal; both arrows indicate the hazard function. If the arrows flash at twice their normal rate, the signal system may have a problem. Check the lamps and the manual rather than assuming the rapid flash is normal.

Neutral
The neutral indicator means the transmission is in neutral while the power switch is on. It is a status confirmation, not an engine warning.
Side stand
On the covered older Chief, Springfield and Vintage clusters, the side-stand lamp illuminates when the stand is down. Confirm the stand is fully retracted before moving and use the model’s interlock instructions if the lamp behaves unexpectedly.
Cruise control
On those covered older models, the cruise-control lamp distinguishes an enabled system that is not set from a set system. A flashing lamp indicates a cruise-related fault. Do not use cruise control until the condition is understood.
How to read a warning correctly
Four observations usually determine the next step:
- Model, year and gauge: this sets the applicable definitions and button procedures.
- Steady or flashing: flashing can indicate active intervention, a rapid-turn-signal fault or a cruise fault, depending on the system.
- Startup-only or persistent: ABS and traction-control indicators on the cited Scout may remain lit until the motorcycle exceeds 6 mph (10 km/h); a running oil-pressure warning is a different category.
- Manual instruction: the decisive wording is whether the manual says to continue, perform a rider check, stop the engine or seek dealer diagnosis.
When speaking with service personnel, provide the exact wording, code data, speed at which it appeared, engine temperature symptoms and any recent battery, tire, maintenance or electrical work. This is more useful than reporting only that “a light came on.”
When riding is unsafe
Stop and follow the manual immediately for an oil-pressure warning above idle, an overtemperature warning that persists after the specified restart, or any symptom involving loss of normal control. For ABS, remember that conventional braking remains available while anti-lock assistance is not; increase following distance and obtain service if the lamp does not clear in the normal activation sequence. A persistent check-engine or charging warning may not cause an immediate change in performance, but it still needs prompt diagnosis rather than weeks of continued riding.
Prevent warning-light problems before a ride
- Complete the model-specific pre-ride inspection, including the Scout oil-pressure-light check where applicable.
- Confirm oil and coolant levels using the manual’s exact checking position and procedure.
- Inspect radiator airflow, tires and visible wiring for damage or contamination.
- Start the motorcycle and watch which lamps clear, which remain for a self-check and which messages appear.
- Keep the owner’s manual available for the motorcycle’s exact year and gauge; do not rely on a generic symbol chart.
The safest interpretation is always model-aware: identify the cluster, note whether the lamp is a start-up status or a persistent warning, perform only the specified checks, and obtain professional diagnosis when the manual calls for it.
