Indian Motorcycle is now independent from Polaris in corporate structure, but it was not completely sold off. Polaris completed the separation on February 2, 2026, selling a majority stake to Carolwood LP while retaining a small equity position. Sales, warranties, dealers, parts, service, and accessories are expected to continue as the new company completes a staged operational transition.

Indian Motorcycle is now a standalone motorcycle company, but the change was not a sale of 100% of the brand. Polaris completed the separation of Indian Motorcycle and sold a majority stake to Los Angeles-based private-equity firm Carolwood LP on February 2, 2026. Polaris retained a small equity position, while Carolwood became the majority owner.

The deal changes Indian Motorcycle’s ownership and corporate structure. It does not, based on the company’s current customer guidance, end motorcycle sales, dealer support, warranty coverage, parts availability, service, or accessories. Those customer-facing operations are continuing through a transition in which Polaris is still providing some temporary services.

What happened to Indian Motorcycle?

Polaris announced the planned transaction on October 13, 2025. The original expectation was that the separation would close during the first quarter of 2026. That expectation was fulfilled when Polaris announced completion on February 2, 2026.

  • 100% brand new, of high quality

  • Durable and practical
  • Stable characteristics and high reliability

Under the completed arrangement:

  • Carolwood LP became Indian Motorcycle’s majority owner.
  • Indian Motorcycle became a standalone company rather than a business included in Polaris’s continuing motorcycle operations.
  • Polaris retained a small equity stake.
  • Approximately 900 employees were expected to transition to the new Indian Motorcycle organization.
  • Indian retained key manufacturing and design resources in Spirit Lake, Iowa; Monticello, Minnesota; and Burgdorf, Switzerland.
  • Mike Kennedy became CEO of the independent Indian Motorcycle organization.

The detailed financial terms were not disclosed. That means it is not accurate to describe the transaction as a complete sale of Indian Motorcycle to Carolwood, or to state an exact purchase price or ownership percentage.

Why did Polaris sell a majority stake?

Polaris said the transaction would let it focus more sharply on businesses with stronger growth potential and create value for shareholders. For Indian Motorcycle, the stated rationale was a more focused leadership structure and a dedicated mission as a standalone motorcycle company.

That makes the transaction both a portfolio simplification for Polaris and a focused-growth bet for Indian. However, the deal itself does not prove that Indian will grow faster, earn higher margins, launch more models, expand its dealer network, or change its manufacturing volumes. Those are possible future outcomes, not results established by the closing.

Who owns and runs Indian Motorcycle now?

Carolwood LP is the majority owner. Polaris remains a minority investor, although the companies have not disclosed the exact ownership split or detailed governance terms.

Carolwood selected Mike Kennedy as CEO. Kennedy has more than 30 years of motorcycle-industry experience, including leadership positions at RumbleOn and Vance & Hines and 26 years at Harley-Davidson, according to Polaris.

His appointment gives the new company an executive with experience across motorcycle manufacturing, retail, aftermarket operations, and the broader powersports industry. It does not, by itself, reveal what Indian’s long-term product or market strategy will be.

Where will Indian motorcycles be made?

The announced transition included Indian manufacturing facilities in Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Monticello, Minnesota, along with the industrial-design and technology center in Burgdorf, Switzerland.

Polaris also said most of the existing Indian team would remain, including engineers, designers, and other employees. Maintaining those people and facilities should help preserve product knowledge during the separation, but it does not guarantee that production levels, staffing, or factory responsibilities will remain unchanged indefinitely.

Is Indian Motorcycle completely separate from Polaris yet?

Legally and strategically, Indian is now an independent company. Operationally, the separation is being completed in stages.

Polaris’s January 2026 earnings-call transcript described transition-service agreements covering areas such as information technology, supply arrangements, and freight. Polaris expected most of those services to expire within approximately nine to twelve months. In practical terms, Indian has its own ownership and leadership, but some behind-the-scenes systems and supply-chain functions still require temporary cooperation while the new company builds or replaces them.

That distinction matters. “Independent” does not mean every computer system, logistics contract, purchasing process, or administrative function changed on February 2. It means Indian is operating as a separate company while the remaining shared services are unwound.

What does the change mean for Indian Motorcycle owners?

For owners, the immediate message from Indian Motorcycle is continuity rather than disruption.

Warranty coverage continues

Indian’s official customer-support guidance says existing warranty coverage remains supported. During the transition, Polaris continues to honor warranties. After the sale, Indian Motorcycle is expected to provide warranty support through its own dedicated team.

Owners should still keep their purchase records, warranty documents, maintenance receipts, and vehicle-identification information. If a claim involves a dealer, a repair already in progress, or a cross-border purchase, the dealer or official customer-support channel remains the appropriate source for the case-specific answer.

Motorcycles continue to be sold through dealers

Indian says it will continue selling motorcycles through its global Indian Motorcycle dealer network. The available guidance supports continued sales and dealer support, but it does not establish that every dealer contract, country-level process, ordering system, or delivery schedule is identical to the Polaris era.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Customers placing an order should confirm availability, estimated delivery, financing, registration requirements, and warranty terms with the specific dealer. A corporate ownership change does not automatically make every local retail or logistics process universal.

Parts, service, clothing, and accessories remain part of the business

Indian’s official materials continue to provide information about service, genuine parts, garments, accessories, owner communications, events, rider-group participation, and its Elite Status subscription. The company’s 2026 accessories and maintenance catalog also identifies genuine Indian Motorcycle parts and accessories.

If you are shopping for Indian Motorcycle accessories, check the exact model and model year before ordering. Fitment can vary among Scout, Chief, touring, and other families, and a catalog listing does not mean a part fits every Indian motorcycle. The same caution applies to maintenance items: verify the motorcycle’s year, engine, trim, and regional specification.

What happened to the 2026 Indian lineup?

The ownership transition took place during Indian Motorcycle’s 125th-anniversary year and alongside an active 2026 product calendar. The 2026 lineup included the new Sport Scout RT, updated colors, and new accessories.

Polaris also announced the 2026 Chief Vintage with a starting price of $19,999 and expected dealership arrival in March 2026. That launch timing shows that Indian had products moving through the pipeline around the transition. It does not show that Carolwood changed the model strategy after closing; the cited materials do not yet provide a post-close product roadmap.

How important was Indian Motorcycle to Polaris?

Before the transaction closed, Polaris reported that Indian Motorcycle contributed approximately $478 million, or 7.0%, of Polaris revenue for the trailing 12-month period ended June 30, 2025.

Polaris also estimated before closing that the transaction would be accretive to annualized adjusted EBITDA by approximately $50 million and adjusted earnings per share by approximately $1.00. These were management’s pre-close estimates. They should not be treated as realized post-transaction results unless later financial reporting confirms them.

Polaris’s 2025 annual report subsequently confirmed that the definitive agreement was entered into in 2025 and that the sale closed in the first quarter of 2026. It also indicated that Polaris no longer includes Indian Motorcycle in its continuing motorcycle business after the sale.

What remains unknown?

The completed transaction answers the ownership question, but not every business question. The available official materials do not establish:

  • the purchase price;
  • the exact percentage acquired by Carolwood;
  • the full set of changes to dealer contracts;
  • Indian Motorcycle’s post-close revenue, profit, or margin performance;
  • the long-term product roadmap under Carolwood;
  • whether manufacturing volumes or factory responsibilities will change;
  • whether Indian will alter its geographic strategy or expand its dealer network.

Those details may become clearer through future Indian Motorcycle announcements, regulatory filings, dealer communications, and financial reporting. Until then, claims that the deal will produce a larger, more profitable, or more innovative Indian should be presented as expectations rather than established facts.

Timeline of the separation

  1. October 13, 2025: Polaris announced plans to separate Indian Motorcycle and sell a majority stake to Carolwood LP.
  2. January 27, 2026: Polaris described transition-service agreements covering IT, supply, freight, and related functions, with most expected to last approximately nine to twelve months.
  3. February 2, 2026: Polaris announced that the separation and majority-stake sale had closed.
  4. March 2026: The 2026 Chief Vintage was expected to arrive at dealerships, according to the earlier product announcement.
  5. June–July 2026: Indian’s official support and owner materials described the company as independent and continued to provide guidance on warranties, sales, parts, service, and owner benefits.

For now, the most accurate summary is straightforward: Indian Motorcycle has left Polaris’s continuing motorcycle business and is now majority-owned by Carolwood, but the brand, its people, facilities, dealer relationships, and customer-support operations are being carried forward through a managed transition rather than an overnight disappearance of the Polaris connection.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Indian Motorcycle became an independent company on February 2, 2026, when Carolwood LP acquired a majority stake and Polaris retained a small investment. Owners should expect warranty, dealer, parts, service, and accessory support to continue, while recognizing that some back-office and logistics functions are still being separated from Polaris. The transaction’s long-term effect on products, prices, profits, and dealer coverage remains unproven.
