This is an imagined choice, not a claim of firsthand experience: the case rests on the MX-5’s two-seat, rear-wheel-drive layout, open-air character and standard manual transmission.
Why the MX-5 fits this imagined last week
A final week behind the wheel is not the time I’d want to spend negotiating a complicated machine. The MX-5’s appeal, as Mazda presents it, is refreshingly focused: two seats, rear-wheel drive, a compact roadster format and near-50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution. That last phrase is Mazda’s description, not a claim of an exact measured split. The combination suggests a car organized around the act of driving rather than the number of people or possessions it can carry.
The roof matters to the fantasy. The standard Miata has a manually operated cloth soft top, giving the car its straightforward open-air identity. The MX-5 RF instead has an electronically retractable hardtop. They share the two-seat premise, but they offer different roof experiences; I’d choose the soft top for this scenario because lowering it is part of the point, not a chore to delegate to a button.
What powers the 2026 US Miata
For the 2026 US model, Mazda lists a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. The figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Mazda also describes the car as lightweight and its weight distribution as near 50:50, qualities that help explain why the MX-5’s appeal is less about headline power than about a deliberately simple, balanced layout. Manual or automatic: which would I choose?
Mazda’s 2026 US lineup makes a six-speed manual standard. Sport and Club are manual-only; Grand Touring is also available with a six-speed automatic and steering-wheel paddle shifters. Mazda North American Operations called the manual a central part of the experience in its January 27, 2026 release: “A standard six-speed manual transmission remains at the heart of the MX-5 Miata driving experience.” For my imagined week, I’d pick the manual—not as a universal rule, but because shifting for myself fits the deliberate, hands-on drive I’m picturing.
Which trim best suits the drive?
Mazda’s 2026 US lineup has three trims. The choice is less a ranking of what makes a life meaningful than a decision about what sort of car I’d want to spend the week in.

Equipment and package availability can vary by configuration, so confirm the details for the exact car. I’d start with the soft-top Club and its manual transmission, but that is a preference, not a claim that it is the right version for every driver.
The practical limits are part of the choice
Mazda specifies room for two passengers. That makes the Miata an honest answer to a personal driving question, not a family-car recommendation. If the imagined week included several passengers or a need to haul substantial luggage, another vehicle would make more sense. The available official material establishes the two-seat layout and roof choices; it does not establish luggage capacity, winter usability, long-distance comfort or real-world ownership costs, so I wouldn’t promise those things on the strength of the specifications alone.

Mazda lists technologies including Blind Spot Monitoring, Smart Brake Support and Lane Departure Warning, while its 2026 release also names features such as Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Driver Attention Alert. Those are equipment descriptions, not a crash-test result or a broad safety rating. Fitment can differ by trim and configuration; Mazda’s 2026 MX-5 owner’s manual notes that equipment and specifications may differ from the actual vehicle.

The MX-5 is not a new experiment in Mazda’s lineup. Mazda’s history identifies four generations: NA (1990–1997), NB (1999–2005), NC (2006–2015) and ND (2016 onward). The first generation was introduced at the Chicago Auto Show on February 10, 1989. Mazda says the ND generation reduced curb weight by 148 pounds or more compared with its predecessor; that is Mazda’s stated comparison, not a figure to apply to every trim or vehicle pairing. The current car’s long lineage makes its focused two-seat formula feel intentional, though history alone cannot tell anyone whether they’ll enjoy owning or driving one.
