Icona unveiled the Vulcano at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show as a one-off, Shanghai-designed and Italian-coachbuilt supersports car. Its “magma-laden” name and Shanghai “fire” were headline imagery, not a literal fire: the car’s story was its proposed hybrid powertrain, with two configurations announced at the time.
What was the Icona Vulcano?
The Vulcano was a concept presented by design house Icona, based in Shanghai, and built by Italian coachbuilder Cecomp, according to New Atlas’s April 23, 2013 report. Winding Road’s April 23, 2013 account reproduces Icona press-release wording that calls it a one-off. The reveal was therefore a proposal for a high-performance hybrid, not evidence of a production launch.
Icona presented two powertrain concepts: the rear-wheel-drive H-Turismo, described as the main reveal, and the H-Competizione, an alternative with electric motors driving the front wheels. The specifications below are figures reported by New Atlas in 2013, not independently verified test results.

All values in the table are Icona’s reported specifications as published by New Atlas in 2013; none should be read as measured performance. Contemporary figures were not entirely consistent: Winding Road noted that the auto-show placard differed from the numbers reported elsewhere. The figures are best understood as claims attached to the concept’s announcement, rather than a single settled specification sheet.

What made the Vulcano visually distinctive?
New Atlas credited the design to Samuel Chuffart and described a carbon-fiber body over an aluminum-extrusion chassis. The most unusual detail was the door mechanism: each door slid outward to clear the fender, then pivoted upward and backward. This movement combined a dramatic opening with the clearance needed around the bodywork.
Other reported design and engineering details included double-wishbone suspension, prominent vents to release heat from the engine bay, and aerodynamic elements around the grille, underbody and wheel arches. These features describe the car as presented; they do not independently establish its performance or handling.

Was the Icona Vulcano produced or sold?
The 2013 accounts establish the Shanghai unveiling, the one-off description and the proposed configurations. They do not establish that the Vulcano later entered production, was offered for sale, or remains available. On the evidence in those contemporary reports, it is safest to describe it as a one-off concept revealed in 2013, rather than a production car.
