Short answer: Carly can be an excellent ownership tool if you drive a supported BMW, MINI, Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT/Cupra, Škoda, Toyota/Lexus, Porsche, Renault/Dacia, or selected Mercedes model and will use its manufacturer-specific features more than once. It is not a universal replacement for a professional scan tool, and it will not automatically tell you which part to replace.
The important distinction is between Carly’s basic OBD functions—generic fault codes, live data and emissions checks—and its paid, vehicle-specific functions such as multi-module diagnostics, coding, service procedures, battery functions and Used Car Check. Before paying, check your exact model, build year and desired feature in Carly’s free compatibility mode. “Supported brand” alone is not enough.
The dramatic headline comes from T3’s July 19, 2023 hands-on article. That review found Carly easy to install and useful for explaining two non-severe fault codes, displaying live data, checking stored mileage and monitoring battery discharge. But it was a single test supervised by a Carly representative, did not identify the vehicle in the article text, and used pricing that is now out of date. The current buying decision is less “will this change my life?” and more “will my exact car unlock enough useful functions to justify proprietary hardware and an annual license?”
What Carly actually is
Carly is a three-part system:
- Carly Universal Scanner: a Bluetooth adapter that plugs into the vehicle’s OBD port, usually beneath the dashboard near the pedals.
- The Carly app: available for iPhone/iPad and Android. The app connects to the scanner and presents scan results, live data, maintenance functions and coding options.
- A Carly license: the hardware unlocks basic OBD access, while advanced functions normally require a single-brand or all-brand Premium license. Smart Mechanic is an additional paid service where documentation is available for a stored code.
The current app listing describes the basic package as including generic OBD diagnostics, live parameters and emissions checks. Premium can add manufacturer-specific diagnostics, repair guidance, maintenance functions, battery checking, Used Car Check and coding—but only where Carly supports the particular vehicle and ECU. Carly explains the distinction in its current feature-coverage documentation.

Basic Carly versus the features people actually buy it for
| Capability | Basic package | Premium or feature license | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generic OBD diagnostics | Yes | Yes | Mostly standardized powertrain and emissions information |
| Generic live data | Yes | Yes | The available parameters depend on the car |
| Emissions check | Yes | Yes | Not necessarily the same as every state or country inspection workflow |
| Full-vehicle or multi-module scan | No or limited | Supported vehicles only | Coverage varies by brand, year, ECU and software version |
| Manufacturer-specific codes | Usually no | Supported vehicles only | Requires the appropriate license |
| Service resets | Limited and vehicle-dependent | Supported vehicles only | A feature may be visible but unavailable on a particular configuration |
| Starter-battery check | Vehicle-dependent | Vehicle-dependent | Not a universal high-voltage EV battery-health test |
| Used Car Check | No or limited | Supported vehicles only | Compares mileage values stored in available ECUs |
| Coding | No | Selected makes and models | Availability is ECU- and software-dependent |
| Smart Mechanic | No | Paid add-on where supported | It explains codes; it does not guarantee a diagnosis |
That table is the central point of this review. Carly is not one equally capable scanner across every vehicle. On a well-supported BMW or VAG vehicle, it can be much more useful than a generic code reader. On an unsupported make, the same hardware may do little more than read standardized OBD data.
What T3’s original test proves—and what it does not
The original T3 article was a real hands-on experience, but it should be treated as an anecdote rather than a controlled product test. The author described himself as not being a “petrolhead,” and a Carly representative supervised the demonstration. The scanner was plugged into the OBD port near the pedals, the initial scan returned two non-severe error codes, and Smart Mechanic supplied explanations, symptoms, possible causes and suggested investigation.
T3 also demonstrated live engine data, service reminders, a Used Car Check and a battery test. The battery test required the vehicle to be used for 24 hours and reported a 7.4% self-discharge result. That is one result from one vehicle under an unspecified test setup—not a universal battery-health threshold or independently validated measurement.
The article also described an “Intelligence” feature that looked at similar errors and predicted possible future problems. Current Carly documentation focuses on fault descriptions, symptoms, causes, consequences, component checks, schematics and repair guidance. Treat the older predictive-diagnostics description as a feature of that 2023 experience, not as proof that every current Carly scan universally predicts future failures.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThere are other important gaps: T3 did not identify the tested vehicle in the article text, did not publish the fault-code numbers, did not show a repeat scan confirmed by another tool or mechanic, and did not establish that the suggested repair was correct. It also repeated promotional language about potentially saving thousands without presenting a cost-savings study. Those limitations do not make the review useless; they simply define how much weight it deserves.
Compatibility comes before purchase
Carly currently lists core support for BMW, MINI, Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda, SEAT/Cupra, Toyota, Lexus, Mercedes, Renault, Dacia and Porsche, along with more limited or model-dependent support for other brands. The broad screening rules published by Carly are:
- Most supported models are from 2001 onward.
- BMW coverage reaches back to approximately 1996.
- Mercedes-specific Carly diagnostics generally start at 2005. Mercedes models from 2001–2004 are currently limited to basic OBD diagnostics.
- Some BMWs from approximately 1996–2002 require an additional 20-pin adapter.
These are screening rules, not guarantees. A model year and brand can be listed while a particular ECU, engine or feature remains unsupported. Volkswagen-group vehicles are especially variable because two cars with the same badge and year can have different control-unit combinations. Aftermarket or retrofitted parts can also prevent Carly from finding or communicating with a module.
Use the Lite version or Carly’s free compatibility flow before buying. Enter:
- Exact make.
- Exact model.
- Build or model year.
- Engine and trim when requested.
- The specific function you want—such as coding, battery registration, service reset or Used Car Check—not merely “diagnostics.”
Also check your phone. Carly’s current support documentation lists iOS/iPadOS 16 or newer and Android 10 or newer. The app must also be able to use Bluetooth and, depending on the phone, Location permission.
The most common buying mistake is reading “BMW supported” or “Toyota supported” and assuming every advanced feature will work. The correct question is: Will Carly perform the particular task I need on this exact car?
What “full diagnostics” means in practice
Basic OBD-II is a standardized gateway to primarily powertrain and emissions-related information. The SAE descriptions of OBD diagnostic test modes and the OBD-II scan-tool scope explain the standardized foundation.
Manufacturer-specific Carly Diagnostics can go beyond that foundation and, on supported vehicles, communicate with multiple installed control units. Depending on the car, those may include the engine, transmission, ABS, airbag, multimedia and other modules. But “full scan” does not mean every ECU on every car. Carly itself warns that access can be limited to particular ECUs, and a missing module may be absent from the vehicle, non-responsive, retrofitted, running unsupported software or simply outside Carly’s coverage.

One-click scans. No signup required.
A successful generic scan therefore does not prove that the entire vehicle is healthy. Conversely, failure to access one module does not necessarily mean the module itself is defective. Read Carly’s diagnostics troubleshooting guidance before treating either result as a mechanical conclusion.

What the main features are good for
Diagnostics and trouble codes
Carly can read and clear generic codes in its basic mode. With the appropriate license and a supported vehicle, it may read manufacturer-specific codes across multiple modules. That can be valuable when a warning light involves ABS, airbags, body electronics or another system that a cheap code reader cannot access.
But a diagnostic trouble code identifies a monitored fault, circuit or likely malfunction area. It is not automatically proof that a particular sensor, module or component has failed. A wiring problem, poor connection, low voltage, vacuum leak, software issue or another upstream fault can produce the same code. SAE material on onboard diagnostics describes the system as identifying monitored malfunctions—not as issuing an automatic parts-ordering instruction.
Best practice: save the original scan report before clearing anything. Carly can save screens or reports as a PDF according to Tom’s Guide’s independent review. Record whether each code is current, pending or historical, then diagnose the cause and rescan after the repair. Clearing a code does not repair the fault, and a clean scan immediately after clearing does not prove the problem is gone.
Smart Mechanic
Smart Mechanic is closer to a structured repair-information service than an automated mechanic. Where Carly has supporting documentation for a stored code, it can provide:
- A detailed fault description.
- Expert-curated explanations.
- Symptoms to look for.
- Possible causes.
- Ways to check those possible causes.
- Potential consequences of leaving the fault unresolved.
- Related issues.
- Component and schematic information.
- Repair guidance.
That can be genuinely helpful to an owner who understands basic maintenance and wants to turn an opaque code into a sensible diagnostic plan. It does not guarantee that the listed cause is the cause on your car, and it is not available for every code. Carly’s Smart Mechanic documentation says the service appears only where supporting information exists.
Live data
Live data lets you observe values while the vehicle is running. Examples include engine speed, coolant temperature and ignition timing. This is useful for watching a symptom, checking whether a sensor reacts to a change and comparing readings over time.
Live data is not automatically self-explanatory. An unusual-looking value may be normal under the current load, temperature or operating condition. You need vehicle-specific specifications and a test plan before condemning a component. Tom’s Guide reported that Carly could show up to six values at once but could not graph them within the app. That makes it convenient for spot checks, but less useful than a professional tool for long, detailed waveform or parameter analysis.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Service functions and resets
On supported vehicles, Carly can help with certain service reminders and maintenance procedures. This may avoid a trip to a shop for a straightforward reset after maintenance has genuinely been completed.
The word “certain” matters. Service-reset availability is vehicle-dependent, and resetting a reminder is not the same as performing the service. Do not use a reset to hide an overdue maintenance item or warning. Check the Lite app for the exact function before subscribing.
Used Car Check
Used Car Check reads mileage values stored in multiple ECUs and looks for inconsistencies. A discrepancy can be a useful reason to ask for service records, title history and an explanation from the seller.
It is not proof of odometer fraud. Some vehicles do not retain useful mileage data in the relevant modules, some modules may not be accessible, and legitimate module replacement or instrument-cluster work can create a mismatch. A clean result is not proof that the mileage is genuine either.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use it as one part of a used-car inspection alongside service invoices, inspection records, accident history, wear consistency, a cold start and an independent mechanical inspection. Carly’s coverage list shows that Used Car Check availability depends on the exact vehicle.
Battery Check
Carly’s Battery Check is primarily concerned with the vehicle’s 12-volt starter battery. It should not be confused with a complete battery-health test for an electric vehicle.

- ABS / Airbag codes NOT Supported - It is able to read and clear check engine information which is part of OBDII system, but it cannot work with non-OBDII systems, including ABS / Airbag / Oil Service Light, etc.
The T3 test observed the vehicle for 24 hours and returned a 7.4% self-discharge figure. That is an individual observation, not an independently validated pass/fail threshold. Battery condition depends on temperature, age, state of charge, parasitic draw and the test procedure. Use Carly as an indication that deserves investigation, not as the only basis for replacing a battery.
BMW battery registration
On supported BMWs, Carly can perform battery registration after replacement. Registration tells the vehicle that a new battery has been installed; it does not physically replace the battery, correct a wrong battery specification or fix a charging-system problem.
Carly’s guidance says to use the battery type recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Replace AGM with AGM, and do not install a replacement with a smaller capacity than the original. If registration fails with the Universal Scanner, Carly recommends switching off Wi-Fi, running the engine and setting communication speed to slow. Never perform battery registration while the vehicle is moving. See Carly’s BMW battery guidance for the exact procedure and failure advice.
Coding
Coding changes selected settings already supported by a vehicle’s control units. It is one of Carly’s strongest reasons to exist for some BMW/MINI and selected Volkswagen-group owners. Possible settings vary by ECU and vehicle configuration, and some changes require several linked coding steps or settings for multiple keys.
Do not assume that a supported brand means supported coding. Carly’s current support documentation says Mercedes vehicles currently have no codable functions through Carly. Mercedes diagnostics may still be available, but a Mercedes owner buying Carly specifically to code the car is likely to be disappointed.
If an ECU is greyed out or missing, it may not be installed, may not respond, may have been retrofitted or may use unsupported software. Carly says it creates backups and performs a pre-coding ECU firmware check. Those safeguards are useful manufacturer claims, but they do not make coding risk-free. Low voltage, interrupted communication, incompatible firmware or an unsupported setting can still leave a function disabled or require recovery.
A successful write does not guarantee the feature will work. The ECU may not support it, the vehicle may require additional linked settings, or the installed software may not contain the required function. Carly’s guidance on coding changes that have no effect explains these limitations.
High-voltage and EV features
Do not buy Carly assuming that its conventional Battery Check is a complete EV battery diagnostic. Carly’s current High Voltage System feature is available only on some BMW electric vehicles, is iOS-only and appears automatically during diagnostics when compatible battery data is detected. It is a limited, vehicle-specific feature rather than a universal EV battery-health solution. Carly also documents separate Tesla-specific features, which should be checked against the exact model before purchase.
How to connect the current Universal Scanner
Carly’s current connection instructions differ from the usual Bluetooth-device setup. Follow this sequence:
- Install or reinstall the current Carly app and restart the phone.
- Remove existing Bluetooth devices from the phone’s Bluetooth list if connection problems persist.
- Enable Location permission for Carly.
- Start the vehicle.
- Unplug the Carly Scanner, wait a few seconds and plug it back into the OBD port.
- Check the LEDs: the blue light should flash approximately once per second and the red light should remain continuously illuminated.
- Enable Bluetooth.
- Do not manually pair the scanner through the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Open Carly and tap Connect in the app.
That last instruction is easy to miss and is a common reason a user concludes that a functioning scanner is broken. Carly’s full current procedure is in its Universal Scanner connection guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf diagnostics fail
Before assuming the car or adapter is faulty, check:
- The app is updated.
- You have an active license for manufacturer-specific diagnostics.
- Bluetooth and Location permission are enabled.
- The exact vehicle was selected manually.
- The engine is running.
- The phone has an internet connection.
- The scanner is firmly connected to the vehicle’s OBD port.
Possible causes include aftermarket or retrofitted parts, unsupported vehicle software, different ECU configurations, an ECU that cannot be found or a temporary Carly server connection problem. If manufacturer-specific diagnostics are unsupported, Carly recommends the fallback path Maintenance → OBD Functions → start engine → Connect. That should give you the basic OBD route rather than pretending that a generic scan is a full vehicle scan.
If coding fails or has no visible effect
Do not repeatedly retry random coding changes. Carly’s documented recovery sequence is:

What Carly costs now
There is no single worldwide Carly price. Cost varies by country, currency, purchase channel, vehicle brand, promotional offer and whether you buy through the website or an app store. Carly directs buyers to its regional checkout for the current price in the Premium Package information.
Useful current reference points include:
| Purchase path | Reference information | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Scanner/basic package | Hardware plus basic OBD access | It is not the same as full manufacturer-specific diagnostics |
| Single-brand Premium | The U.S. Apple listing shows an example of $59.99 for BMW Full-Version | It may be poor value if your household owns several makes |
| All Brands | The U.S. Apple listing shows an example of $82.99 | “All Brands” does not mean every advanced function works on every car |
| All Brands plus Smart Mechanic | The U.S. Apple listing shows an example of $118.99 | Smart Mechanic still appears only for codes with supporting documentation |
| Smart Mechanic alone | The U.S. Apple listing shows an example of $35.99 | It adds information, not guaranteed component diagnosis |
| Website purchase | Regional package and checkout pricing | Website cancellation and refund rules differ from app-store rules |
Tom’s Guide listed the scanner at $90 and described a $160 Premium list price, with first-year promotions between $69 and $99 depending on manufacturer. These are useful reference points, not a promise of today’s price. Check the checkout screen immediately before paying.
For comparison, T3’s 2023 U.K. figures were £74.80 for the scanner, £56 per year for single-brand Premium, £35.99 per year for Smart Mechanic and an additional £20.84 for all-brand access. Those figures should not be reused as current pricing.
The subscription does not disappear when you stop using the app
The hardware may remain yours, but advanced software access is license-based. When a paid subscription expires, the scanner can revert to basic OBD functions, according to Tom’s Guide’s review. That means the recurring cost is part of the ownership decision, not a minor footnote.
- Website purchase: Carly says to contact it with the invoice and request cancellation at least one month before the renewal date.
- Apple purchase: cancel through the iPhone or iPad subscription settings.
- Google Play purchase: cancel through Google Play subscriptions.
Carly says website app-license purchases generally cannot be refunded once service performance has begun. Apple and Google purchases must be handled through the applicable store. Deleting your Carly account does not automatically cancel the subscription or create a refund. The separate renewal instructions, refund instructions and account-deletion guidance should be read before purchase.
If you move between iOS and Android, Carly’s account-transfer guidance requires the same email address for the account. Billing and subscription status can still be governed by the original purchase platform, so confirm the license before switching devices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy is another trade-off
Carly connects a phone app to a vehicle and an online account, so privacy disclosures are relevant. Apple’s U.S. App Store disclosure says Carly may use identifiers for tracking and may link contact information, usage data, diagnostics, crash data and customer-support content to the user. Google Play says no data is shared with third parties, while also stating that the app may collect location, personal information and other data.

Those are platform-declared disclosures, not an independent privacy audit, and the two stores summarize the information differently. Read the current disclosures for your region and platform if this matters to you. Account-data deletion is available through Carly, but, again, it is separate from subscription cancellation.
Is Carly accurate enough to replace a diagnostic fee?
Sometimes it can save a trip for a simple, well-understood issue. It can also make a shop visit more productive by giving you a saved scan report and a clearer description of the symptoms. But there is no supplied independent benchmark establishing Carly’s diagnostic accuracy, false-positive rate, false-negative rate or ability to identify the correct repair across all supported vehicles.
Neither Carly’s documentation nor the T3 and Tom’s Guide reviews prove that a code consistently leads to the right part. The diagnostic process still requires testing:
- Confirm the complaint and warning-light conditions.
- Record the original codes and freeze-frame or live-data information when available.
- Inspect wiring, connectors, fuses, fluid levels and related systems.
- Use vehicle-specific specifications and tests.
- Repair the confirmed cause, then clear and rescan.
For airbags, brakes, steering, high-voltage systems and faults that affect safe operation, use a qualified technician unless you have the training and equipment to work safely. Carly is an information and access tool—not a substitute for professional diagnosis, programming, key work, ADAS calibration or dealer-level procedures.

Carly versus the alternatives
| Your priority | Alternative worth investigating | Why it may suit you better |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional generic diagnostics with no required subscription | A wired or handheld OBD-II reader, or FIXD | Less convenient or less brand-specific, but can avoid Carly’s recurring advanced-license model. FIXD says its sensor has no required monthly fee and that Premium is optional. |
| Plain-language generic code explanations | BlueDriver | BlueDriver positions its app around translating vehicle trouble codes into plain language. |
| BMW/MINI-focused coding and diagnostics | BimmerCode plus BimmerLink | These specialist apps may be a more focused comparison for the exact BMW/MINI chassis and coding or diagnostic task. |
| Volkswagen-group coding and adaptations | OBDeleven | OBDeleven offers free diagnostics without a subscription, while advanced coding and adaptations require paid plans; device, plan and credit costs are separate considerations. |
| Broad professional coverage | Autel, Launch, Snap-on or a repair-shop tool | These tools generally cost substantially more and may require software subscriptions, but are more appropriate for professional diagnostics and service functions. |
These are not universal winners. A BMW owner who wants coding may prefer a BMW specialist app; a mixed-brand household may value Carly’s all-brand option; and a driver who reads one check-engine code every few years may be better served by a cheap reader or a local parts store. Compare coverage for the exact vehicle, not just the product’s brand list.
For a no-subscription decision, remember that a “free” diagnostic app may still require proprietary hardware, and a specialist tool may charge separately for advanced plans or credits. OBDeleven’s current product page, FIXD’s subscription explanation, BlueDriver and BimmerLink are useful starting points for a vehicle-specific comparison.
Who should buy Carly?
Carly is a strong fit if you:
- Own a supported BMW/MINI or Volkswagen-group vehicle and want coding or manufacturer-specific module access.
- Perform your own maintenance and need service resets, battery functions or guided fault information.
- Own multiple vehicles or regularly inspect used cars.
- Want reports you can save and share from a phone.
- Accept an annual license in exchange for convenience and deeper access.
It is a weak fit if you:

How to judge a Carly review or hands-on test
The original T3 experience demonstrates ease of use, but it does not answer every buying question. A useful independent test should identify the exact year, make, model, engine and trim; phone and operating-system version; scanner generation; license purchased; connection time; generic and full-module scan results; live-data availability; report export; Used Car Check mileage values; battery-test duration; service-reset outcome; and coding backup and restore behavior.
Tom’s Guide contributes useful hardware details, a Subaru hands-on test, app observations, live-data limitations and subscription information. It still does not provide a systematic vehicle-by-vehicle coverage test, an accuracy benchmark or a detailed list of which functions worked on every tested car. Carly’s support pages are the best sources for current compatibility and recovery instructions, but they are first-party documentation and do not independently establish diagnostic accuracy or long-term reliability.

Final verdict
Carly is a convenient smartphone diagnostic system with a split personality. The basic layer is a generic OBD reader with live data and emissions information. The valuable layer is the vehicle-specific access that can scan additional modules, explain codes, reset supported maintenance functions, compare ECU mileage, register certain BMW batteries and code selected settings.
That valuable layer is also where the caveats live. Coverage depends on the exact car and ECU, advanced access generally renews annually, Smart Mechanic is not universal, Mercedes currently has no Carly coding functions, and a trouble code still requires diagnosis. The original T3 review was a useful supervised demonstration—not proof that Carly will save thousands or work identically on your vehicle.
My buying recommendation: install Carly Lite, select the exact vehicle and check the exact feature you need before spending anything. Buy Carly if it supports a recurring task that would otherwise cost you more in shop visits or if you specifically want its BMW/MINI or VAG workflow. Skip it for occasional generic code reading, unsupported vehicles, Mercedes coding expectations or a firm no-subscription preference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Carly work without a subscription?
Yes, for basic OBD functions such as generic fault-code reading and clearing, supported live data and emissions checks. Manufacturer-specific diagnostics, coding, many service functions, Used Car Check and other advanced features generally require an active license. When an advanced subscription expires, the hardware may revert to basic OBD access.
Will Carly tell me which part is faulty?
Not reliably from the code alone. A diagnostic trouble code identifies a monitored fault, circuit or likely malfunction area. Wiring, connectors, voltage, software and related components can all produce similar codes. Smart Mechanic can explain possible causes and checks where documentation exists, but it does not guarantee the failed component or repair.
Can Carly code a Mercedes?
Carly’s current support documentation says Mercedes vehicles currently have no codable functions through Carly. Diagnostics may still be available on supported Mercedes vehicles, particularly newer models, but check the exact model and function in Carly Lite before buying.
Can Carly detect a rolled-back odometer?
It can compare mileage values stored in available ECUs and flag inconsistencies on supported vehicles. That is a screening result, not conclusive proof of odometer fraud. Service records, title history and an independent inspection remain necessary.
Can Carly replace a mechanic or dealer scan tool?
No. Carly can reduce dependence on a shop for straightforward scans, resets and supported owner-level tasks. It is not a substitute for professional diagnosis, programming, key work, ADAS calibration, high-voltage work or safety-critical repairs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Bottom Line
Bottom line: Carly is worth considering for a DIY owner of a precisely supported BMW/MINI, VAG, Toyota/Lexus, Porsche, Renault/Dacia or selected Mercedes vehicle who will use its advanced functions repeatedly. It is not good value as a one-off generic code reader. Check the exact car and feature in Carly Lite, calculate the annual renewal cost and treat every code as the beginning of diagnosis—not the diagnosis itself.
