Proyas posted a side-by-side collage with the caption, Hey Elon, Can I have my designs back please?
That was a pointed public complaint—not a proven finding of copying or a reported lawsuit. The available coverage does not show that Proyas filed a copyright case against Tesla or Musk.

What Alex Proyas posted
On October 13, 2024, Proyas shared a comparison on X. The collage placed images from I, Robot beside Tesla imagery involving three products:
- Optimus: Tesla’s humanoid robot compared with the film’s sleek, pale robots.
- Cybercab, or Robotaxi: Tesla’s futuristic passenger vehicle compared with an autonomous-looking car from the movie.
- Robovan: Tesla’s larger passenger transport concept compared with a group vehicle shown in the film.
His wording—“my designs”—should not be read to mean that Proyas personally created every visual element in the movie. Film designs are produced by larger teams of production designers, concept artists, visual-effects specialists and other contributors. Coverage also reported that Proyas pointed to the talented design team he worked with on I, Robot.

What Tesla showed at the “We, Robot” event
Tesla’s event took place on October 10, 2024. The presentation featured the Cybercab, the Robovan and an Optimus demonstration, alongside Tesla’s broader pitch for autonomous transportation and humanoid robotics. Tesla’s official event recap and full event video provide the primary record of the presentation.
The official video places the main segments approximately here:

| Product | Approximate event segment | What was presented |
|---|---|---|
| Cybercab/Robotaxi | 1:00–3:50 | A purpose-built autonomous vehicle concept |
| Robovan | 17:47–19:49 | A larger autonomous transport concept |
| Optimus | 23:44–33:30 | Tesla’s humanoid robot project and demonstrations |
Tesla’s 2024 filing described the Cybercab and Robovan as vehicles intended to operate without steering wheels or pedals. However, the event involved prototypes, demonstrations and future plans—not proof that every product shown was commercially available or operating independently in ordinary conditions.

Why the comparisons looked familiar
Optimus and the film’s humanoid robots
The comparison is based on broad visual traits: pale surfaces, simplified facial treatment, smooth contours and human proportions. Those qualities create a similar impression when the images are placed side by side. But the robots are not identical, and a shared humanoid form is also a common starting point for fictional and real-world robotics.
Contemporary reporting questioned whether some Optimus demonstrations included remote human assistance. That issue is separate from the design dispute: a robot’s operating method does not establish whether its appearance was copied.
Cybercab and the autonomous car
Proyas’s comparison linked Tesla’s rounded, minimalist Cybercab silhouette with a futuristic autonomous car from I, Robot. The resemblance is strongest at the level of overall shape and concept: a smooth vehicle associated with driverless transportation.
Tesla currently distinguishes its Robotaxi service from the future-oriented Cybercab vehicle. Its Robotaxi page describes autonomous rides in selected U.S. cities using Model Y vehicles, while presenting Cybercab as a purpose-built vehicle intended for future availability.

Robovan and the group-transport vehicle
The Robovan comparison concerns a larger, rounded passenger vehicle beside a similar kind of futuristic shuttle from the film. Both communicate automated group transportation through a clean, simplified form. That makes the visual parallel easy to understand, but it remains a comparison of appearance and concept—not evidence that Tesla reproduced a protected drawing.
The significance of “We, Robot”
Tesla’s event title plainly evokes I, Robot and Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot short-story collection. Proyas’s film was inspired by Asimov’s work, although the 2004 movie is not a direct adaptation of one single story.
The title made the science-fiction connection more conspicuous. It may have intensified the impression that Tesla was deliberately referencing familiar robot fiction. It does not, by itself, prove that Tesla copied Proyas’s film designs or intended to use protected movie artwork.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWas this a copyright accusation or a lawsuit?
The most accurate description is a public design-copying dispute. Proyas called out Musk through a sarcastic social-media post, and news outlets described the post as an accusation. But the available reporting does not establish a lawsuit by Proyas, a court ruling, or a demonstrated case of copyright infringement.

That distinction matters because copyright generally protects particular expressive works, not broad ideas such as:
- a humanoid robot;
- a self-driving taxi;
- a futuristic shuttle; or
- a smooth, minimalist vehicle.
A legal claim would require more than showing that two designs share a futuristic aesthetic. The relevant questions could include whether Tesla had access to protected material, whether specific expressive elements were substantially reproduced and what rights belonged to the film’s creators or rights holders. Nothing in the cited coverage establishes those facts.
In short, the visual similarities can be debated without concluding that Tesla “stole” the designs. They may reflect shared science-fiction conventions, industrial-design trends, practical engineering requirements or an intentional reference to familiar futuristic imagery.
Did Elon Musk or Tesla respond?
Contemporary reports said Musk had not publicly addressed Proyas’s complaint at the time. That is different from saying that Musk “ignored” it. Tesla’s event materials described its own autonomous-vehicle and robotics plans but did not, in the cited coverage, provide a direct response to Proyas’s post.

Matt Granger, identified in coverage as an assistant to Proyas on I, Robot, reportedly made a more aggressive criticism of Musk and later deleted it. That post was secondary context, not an official statement on behalf of Proyas or the film’s rights holders.
Don’t confuse it with the Blade Runner 2049 lawsuit
In October 2024, Alcon Entertainment, which controls rights connected with Blade Runner 2049, was separately reported to have sued Tesla and Musk over imagery associated with the Robotaxi presentation. That was a different dispute involving different rights holders and allegations. It does not turn Proyas’s I, Robot post into a lawsuit.
The separate case is relevant only as background: it shows that science-fiction imagery around the Robotaxi event generated more than one controversy. The two matters should not be merged.

Proyas saw enough resemblance between Tesla’s Optimus, Cybercab and Robovan concepts and imagery from I, Robot to publicly call out Musk. The “We, Robot” branding made the comparison feel even more deliberate. But the evidence described in the available reporting establishes a cultural and visual controversy—not proven copying, a legal judgment or a lawsuit by Proyas.
