That makes the charging stop itself comparable with a short petrol refueling visit—but it is not a universal five-minute experience. The result requires a compatible vehicle, a compatible station, suitable battery conditions and access to a still-developing network.
BYD announced the battery and charging system in Shenzhen on March 5, 2026. The initial rollout is centered on China, while the Denza Z9GT is planned to lead the European introduction.

BYD’s five-minute charging claim, explained
Under BYD’s stated conditions, compatible vehicles can charge:
| Charging window | BYD’s claimed time |
|---|---|
| 10% to 70% | 5 minutes |
| 10% to 97% | 9 minutes |
| 20% to 97% at −30°C | 12 minutes |
The system’s charger has a maximum single-connector output of 1,500 kW, or 1.5 megawatts. These are manufacturer-stated figures for a complete battery-and-charger system, not a promise that any BYD—or any public charger—will deliver that performance.

Charging is also not linear. A battery generally accepts its highest power through part of the session, then slows as its state of charge rises. A 10% to 70% stop therefore cannot be extrapolated directly to a full charge.
It is not simply a battery that charges in five minutes
FLASH Charging depends on several pieces working together:
- Blade Battery 2.0: BYD’s second-generation vehicle battery, which the company says has about 5% higher energy density than the previous generation.
- Vehicle architecture: The battery pack, high-voltage wiring, connectors, cooling system, power electronics and software must all accept the required charging power.
- FLASH charger: The station must be designed to communicate with and safely supply a compatible vehicle.
- Thermal management: Battery temperature affects how much power the pack can accept. BYD’s cold-weather result is a company-reported test, not proof that every unconditioned car parked at −30°C will reproduce it.
- On-site energy storage: BYD says its stations use high-capacity storage to buffer demand, drawing energy from the grid more gradually and delivering a high-power burst to the car.
A vehicle with an earlier Blade Battery does not automatically support FLASH Charging, and existing owners should not assume a software update can add it. Compatibility can depend on the cell design, pack, cooling hardware, connectors and power electronics.

BYD’s announcement describes the battery and charging system as a combined technology rather than a standalone battery upgrade.
How much range can five minutes add?
There is no single answer because state-of-charge percentage is not the same as miles or kilometres of range. Battery capacity, vehicle efficiency, weather, driving speed and the actual charging curve all matter.
As an illustration, a vehicle rated at 1,000 km on China’s CLTC test cycle would theoretically gain about 600 km from a 10% to 70% charge if the percentage mapped perfectly to usable range. That is not a universal real-world promise. Highway efficiency is typically different from test-cycle efficiency, and vehicles with smaller batteries or less efficient drivetrains will add a different distance.
BYD’s “more than 1,000 km” figures apply to some configurations and use the Chinese CLTC cycle. They should not be treated as equivalent to EPA or WLTP range ratings.

That earlier claim should not be confused with the 2026 Blade Battery 2.0 and FLASH Charging announcement.
Does 1,500 kW mean the car charges at 1,500 kW?
No. 1,500 kW is the charger’s maximum rating. The vehicle determines how much power it can accept, and the delivered power normally changes throughout the session.
Actual performance can be limited by:
- battery temperature and preconditioning;
- the battery’s state of charge;
- connector, cable and power-electronics limits;
- thermal management;
- the vehicle’s charging specification; and
- station conditions or power-sharing arrangements.
A non-compatible EV will not automatically charge at 1.5 MW simply because it is connected to a FLASH station. Even a compatible BYD vehicle may not reproduce the headline result in every session.
Is this really as fast as petrol refueling?
For the charging stop itself, BYD’s comparison is credible. A five-to-nine-minute stop falls within the broad time many drivers associate with filling a petrol or gasoline car, while adding a substantial amount of energy.
But the overall experience is not yet equivalent. Petrol stations are generally more widespread, use a common fuel standard across many vehicle brands and can serve cars without requiring a particular battery or charging curve. EV drivers also have to consider:

- whether a compatible FLASH station exists along the route;
- whether it is available when they arrive;
- queues, payment and bay access;
- regional connector and software support; and
- the time required to build and maintain the network.
BYD may have narrowed the time gap between EV charging and refueling. It has not yet eliminated the availability gap. For many EV owners, home charging remains more convenient despite being far slower, because the car can charge while parked overnight.

BYD said it had 4,239 FLASH charging stations in China as of March 5, 2026, with a target of 20,000 by the end of 2026, including planned highway coverage. The target is a plan, not a completed network.
The technology is beginning to move beyond China. BYD identified the Denza Z9GT as an early European model for the FLASH Charging introduction in 2026. That announcement does not establish broad retail availability, local pricing, country-by-country delivery dates or full five-minute performance in ordinary public use. The Denza Z9GT announcement should therefore be read as an overseas rollout signal, not proof that the system is widely available across Europe.

What is new about Blade Battery 2.0?
BYD says the second-generation battery offers roughly 5% higher energy density, improved low-temperature charging and more than 1,000 km of CLTC range in some vehicles. It also reports safety testing that combined FLASH charging with nail penetration and found no thermal runaway, smoke or fire after 500 FLASH cycles.
Those safety and durability findings remain BYD-reported results. They were not independently validated by a regulator, laboratory or peer-reviewed publication identified for this article. The 500-cycle test also does not establish the long-term degradation rate an ordinary owner will see.
Prospective buyers should look for the applicable battery warranty, capacity-retention threshold, charging recommendations and conditions on any claimed lifetime or capacity warranty. Fast-charging durability can depend on temperature, chemistry, charging frequency and time spent at high state of charge.

Is BYD’s system a world record?
BYD calls the result a new record for mass-produced EV charging speed. That wording should be attributed to BYD rather than treated as an independently adjudicated, permanent industry ranking.
CATL and other manufacturers are also developing high-rate charging systems. Figures reported for competitors such as Geely-linked vehicles are not sufficient here to establish a like-for-like ranking. Charging claims can use different vehicles, battery sizes, starting percentages, temperatures and definitions of production readiness.
The safer conclusion is that BYD is one of the leading companies in the megawatt-charging race, with an announced production-focused system rather than a laboratory-only concept.
What buyers should check before paying for “five-minute charging”
- Confirm the exact model and trim. Do not assume every BYD, Denza, Yangwang or Fangchengbao vehicle has Blade Battery 2.0.
- Check the regional specification. Battery, connector, software and charging capability can differ between China-market and export vehicles.
- Find compatible stations on your actual routes. A fast car is less useful if the required chargers are unavailable or geographically distant.
- Read the charging curve, not only the peak number. Ask how long the vehicle sustains high power and what conditions are required.
- Compare the right range standard. CLTC, WLTP and EPA figures are different test-cycle measurements.
- Ask about battery conditioning. Determine whether the car must precondition before a rapid stop and how that affects winter trips.
- Review warranty terms. Check capacity retention, transferability, exclusions and whether frequent high-power charging affects coverage.
- Separate advertised speed from daily convenience. Home charging, route coverage, station queues and charging prices may matter more than the best-case stop time.
Verdict
BYD’s announcement is real, significant production technology—but the headline belongs to the vehicle, battery, charger and energy-storage network together. Under BYD’s stated test conditions, charging from 10% to 70% in five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes brings the stop itself close to petrol refueling time.
For ordinary drivers, however, the decisive questions are still compatibility, station coverage, delivered charging power, regional availability and long-term battery performance. BYD has made EV charging speed look much less like the fundamental obstacle. It has not yet made every EV charge like a petrol car, everywhere.
