The “New app available” feature was inferred from a new_app_available string found in Android Auto 13.7 in February 2025. That discovery suggested Google was developing a way to alert users when an installed phone app gained a compatible car interface—not that every Android app could suddenly appear on the dashboard.
What was the “New app available” feature?
On February 8, 2025, Android Auto analysis identified a resource string named new_app_available in version 13.7. The finding was linked to Google’s Car Ready Mobile Apps Program, which is intended to help certain mobile apps provide a safe, adapted experience in a vehicle.

The likely purpose was a notification or prompt telling you that a phone-installed app had become usable with the connected car. However, a resource string is not proof of a live feature. It does not reveal the trigger, supported app list, rollout date, or whether the feature was experimental, staged, or controlled remotely by Google.
Most importantly, it did not prove that arbitrary apps from Google Play would be allowed to run on Android Auto.

Android Auto is not unrestricted app mirroring
Android Auto is a phone-projection system. Your phone runs the app, while the vehicle display shows an interface that the app developer has adapted to Google’s Android-for-Cars requirements.
That means installing an ordinary Android app on your phone does not automatically make it available in the car. The app must expose a supported automotive experience and satisfy Google’s safety and usability rules. The result is a controlled interface—not a full copy of the phone screen.
Which apps can work with Android Auto?
Google has expanded Android Auto selectively by category. Availability can depend on the app, phone, Android version, vehicle, country, account, and staged rollout.
Established categories
- Navigation and mapping
- Music and other media
- Podcasts
- Messaging, voice, and calling
- Weather and electric-vehicle services, where supported
- Games while the vehicle is parked
These categories still do not mean that every app in a category is approved or compatible.

Games while parked
Selected Android games began appearing in Android Auto during 2025. Reports identified titles including Angry Birds 2 and Beach Buggy Racing. The games are intended for parked use: when the vehicle leaves Park, a game may close or become unavailable.
The rollout was associated with Android 15 on the connected phone and the capability’s rollout, rather than being guaranteed solely by installing Android Auto 14.1. See the reported Android Auto games rollout.
Video, browser, and weather apps
Google announced support for additional video and browser experiences in 2025. Early availability was tied to Android 16 on the phone and compatible vehicles. By 2026, Google said video apps such as YouTube would be supported in selected cars from brands including BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo.

Communication apps
Google Meet began rolling out broadly to Android Auto in June 2026. The car experience is focused on calling controls rather than a normal video-conference interface: camera use and video feeds are limited while driving.
If Meet does not appear after the rollout reaches your account, opening and restarting the phone’s Meet app may help initialize the integration before reconnecting to Android Auto. Availability remains dependent on the rollout and vehicle setup. Read about Google Meet for Android Auto.
Android Auto vs. Android Automotive
Many reports about a much larger car app catalog concern Android Automotive OS or Google built-in, not Android Auto.

GM’s June 24, 2026 announcement illustrates the difference. Select model-year 2024-and-newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles with Google built-in became eligible for more than 200 additional native apps through a “car compatible apps” section in the vehicle’s Google Play Store. How to check whether a new app is available
- Install any available Android update on your phone.
- Update Android Auto through Google Play.
- Update the app you want to use in the car.
- Connect the phone to the vehicle.
- Open the Android Auto app launcher on the car display.
- Look for a new app, an availability notification, or a category such as games or media.
- Check the app’s Google Play listing for Android Auto or Android-for-Cars support.
- If the app was updated while connected, restart Android Auto and reconnect.
Do not expect a universal menu item called “New app available.” The original evidence was a code-string discovery, not confirmation of a standard setting or guaranteed notification.
If your vehicle uses Android Automotive or Google built-in instead, open the vehicle’s Google Play Store and look for “car compatible apps” or the manufacturer’s car app catalog.
Why an installed app may not appear
- No approved car interface: The app may work on the phone but have no Android Auto experience.
- Unsupported software: The phone, Android Auto, or app version may be too old—or the feature may require a newer Android release.
- Vehicle limitation: New video and other advanced features may require a supported head unit or vehicle software build.
- Android Automotive only: An app available natively in a Google built-in vehicle may not be available through phone projection.
- Region or account restrictions: Country, language, subscription, or account eligibility can affect visibility.
- Staged rollout: Google or the developer may be enabling the feature gradually.
- Motion restrictions: A game or video app may appear only while parked.
If an app appeared and then disappeared, the vehicle may have left Park, a staged experiment may have ended, or an app or system update may have changed eligibility. It is also normal for a feature to work in one vehicle but not another when the capability depends on the car’s software or head unit.

What Google’s 2026 direction means
Google’s Android Auto roadmap includes broader media capabilities, video apps, Gemini features, and Zoom, but announced plans are not the same as universal availability. The rollout remains category-based and dependent on compatible cars and software.

The direction is clear: Android Auto is becoming more useful for passengers, parked activities, communications, and specialized services. But safety rules still limit visually demanding or interaction-heavy features while driving. The likely future is more purpose-built interfaces—not a dashboard version of every app on your phone.
Should you buy a new head unit for this feature?
No. The new_app_available discovery alone is not a reason to replace your car stereo or buy an aftermarket receiver. If your older vehicle lacks Android Auto, compatible receivers from manufacturers such as Sony, Pioneer, and Alpine may add phone projection, but compatibility with cameras, steering-wheel controls, factory systems, and vehicle settings must be checked first.
No accessory or unofficial APK installer can bypass Google’s automotive app approval rules and make every Android app appear safely on the car display.
Bottom line
The “New app available” feature was a plausible Android Auto development clue found in version 13.7—not proof of an unlocked, universal app store. Google has since expanded Android Auto selectively into games, video, browser, weather, media, and communication experiences, with strict requirements and parked-only limits for some features.
If you hear about hundreds of new car apps, first check whether the story is about Android Automotive or Google built-in. Native vehicle apps and Android Auto phone projection are related Google technologies, but they do not offer the same catalog or installation process.
