Hyundai’s 560-mile figure was a rounded conversion of a 2024 target of more than 900 km, not an EPA rating for a vehicle you can buy today. Hyundai’s newer roadmap calls for more than 600 miles of total range from its first extended-range EVs (EREVs), targeted for the first half of 2027, with a Santa Fe EREV expected to be built in Alabama.
Is Hyundai really making a 560-mile EV?
Hyundai announced in August 2024 that it was developing an extended-range electric vehicle capable of more than 900 km on a full charge. That metric converts to roughly 559 miles, which is why headlines rounded it to 560 miles.

It was a development target, not a certified EPA result. Hyundai has not published an EPA, WLTP or independent road-test result for the future vehicle, so the final rating could change with configuration, tires, temperature, speed and test cycle.

Hyundai’s September 2025 roadmap described its EREVs as delivering more than 600 miles (960 km) through battery-engine integration. The company said the system combines high-performance batteries and motors with less than half the battery capacity of a comparable conventional long-range EV.

The August 26, 2026 update applies that ambition to the planned Santa Fe EREV and describes the figure as more than 600 miles of total range. “Total range” is important: it is not a promise that the vehicle will travel 600 miles solely on energy stored in its battery.
How Hyundai’s EREV system is supposed to work
Electric motors drive the vehicle
An EREV uses electric motors for propulsion, so acceleration and normal driving should have the immediate, quiet response associated with a battery-electric vehicle. Hyundai says its planned system is intended to preserve an EV-like driving experience.

The engine acts as a generator
Instead of relying only on a large battery, a combustion engine produces electricity for the drive system when additional energy is needed. Hyundai’s 2024 description said the design allows both refueling and charging while providing more than 900 km when fully charged.
Total range is different from electric range
Hyundai has not stated the Santa Fe EREV’s battery-only range, battery capacity, fuel-tank size or generator output. Until those figures are released, the 600-plus-mile statement should be read as the combined distance available from the charged battery and onboard fuel.

Will you still need to stop and charge on a long trip?
For a trip that fits within the vehicle’s eventual battery-only range, you could charge as you would with any EV. On a longer journey, the generator is intended to supply electricity after the battery’s usable energy is depleted, so charging does not have to be the only way to continue.
You would still need energy stops. Those could be brief gasoline refueling stops rather than a lengthy high-power charging session, depending on the vehicle’s operating strategy and the driver’s route. Owners may also choose to charge during meals, overnight stays or destination visits to minimize fuel use. Hyundai has not yet published charging time, fuel economy or a battery-only range for the Santa Fe EREV.

How the planned EREV compares with Hyundai’s current EVs
| Vehicle or plan | Published range figure | What the figure means | Availability status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5 | Up to 318 miles | Hyundai USA EPA-estimated maximum | Current model |
| 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9 | Up to 335 miles | Hyundai USA EPA-estimated maximum | Current model |
| Planned Hyundai EREV family | More than 600 miles (960 km) | Hyundai roadmap target for total range; not an EPA certification | Planned for 2027 |
| 2024 EREV concept target | More than 900 km (about 559 miles) | Earlier Hyundai development target that produced the rounded 560-mile headline | Development announcement |
The comparison shows why the target would be significant if certified: it would nearly double the listed range of Hyundai’s longest-range current EVs, while using a smaller battery than a comparable long-range battery EV according to Hyundai’s roadmap.

Hyundai’s latest stated window is the first half of 2027 for its first EREV models. The company identifies the Santa Fe EREV as an expected U.S.-built vehicle at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama.
Hyundai has not finalized the U.S. launch date, trim lineup, pricing, order process, charging specifications, fuel economy or EPA range. Production plans and specifications can change before sales begin.
What range-anxiety trade-offs should buyers expect?
Potential advantages
- Electric-motor propulsion without requiring a battery large enough for a 600-mile battery-only trip.
- Gasoline refueling as a fallback when charging is unavailable or inconvenient.
- Less dependence on finding a fast charger during long-distance travel.
- A battery strategy Hyundai says is intended to improve price competitiveness through capacity optimization.
Open questions and compromises
- The vehicle will still carry an engine, generator hardware and fuel, unlike a pure battery EV.
- Running costs will depend on electricity prices, gasoline prices, maintenance and the final fuel economy; Hyundai has not supplied those figures.
- Actual battery-only distance, charging speed, cargo impact, towing capability and cold-weather performance remain unknown.
- The advertised range is a company target until an official certification and production specification are released.
What the 560-mile headline means for shoppers
Hyundai is pursuing an EREV that could make long trips less dependent on charging infrastructure, but the original 560-mile wording should not be treated as a current EPA-rated EV range. The more recent plan is a 600-plus-mile total-range target for a first-half-2027 EREV launch, with the Santa Fe named as the expected U.S. model. Its usefulness will ultimately depend on the certified range, battery-only distance, fuel economy, charging performance and price Hyundai publishes closer to production.
