Engine and automatic transmission
The SMAX uses a 155cc single-cylinder engine with liquid cooling, a SOHC four-valve head and electronic fuel injection. Its fully automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) and V-belt final drive require no manual gear changes, making the scooter suited to stop-and-go commuting. Yamaha’s published U.S. material does not provide a tested horsepower figure for this version.

Yamaha’s 2016 U.S. brochure lists 81 mpg as an estimate. It is not a guaranteed real-world result: rider weight, speed, traffic, temperature, tire pressure, maintenance and fuel quality all affect consumption. With a 2.0-gallon tank, multiplying the brochure estimate by tank capacity gives a theoretical figure of about 162 miles, but riders should refuel before that point rather than treat it as a dependable reserve range.

Size, seat height and practicality
At 31.3 inches, the seat is taller than some small urban scooters but manageable for many riders. The 328-pound wet weight includes operating fluids and a full fuel load as specified by Yamaha, so it is the relevant figure for moving or parking the scooter rather than a dry chassis weight.

Yamaha describes the under-seat compartment as large enough for a full-face helmet or groceries and more. That makes the SMAX useful for daily errands, although the exact items that fit depend on helmet shell size and how the compartment is shaped. Yamaha also markets it for two-up use; passenger comfort and legal equipment still depend on rider and passenger size and local requirements.
Can a 2016 Yamaha SMAX be ridden on the freeway?
Yamaha says the SMAX “may be operated on highways/freeways where permitted.” That wording is a legal qualification, not a universal approval. Check your state, province or municipality for minimum displacement, minimum speed, licensing, equipment and road-posting rules before entering a freeway. A 155cc scooter may be mechanically capable of keeping pace on some roads, but traffic speed, wind, grades and rider experience determine whether a particular route is appropriate.

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.’s 2015 release for the 2016 Majesty S XC155 lists 155 cm³, 11 kW (15 PS) at 7,500 rpm, 14 N·m at 6,000 rpm, 145 kg vehicle weight, a 7.4-liter tank and a 349,920-yen base MSRP. Those are Japan-market figures for the closely related Majesty S, not replacements for the U.S. SMAX specifications. Market-specific equipment, test cycles, currencies and weight conventions must be kept separate when comparing listings.
