The other $448 million was for a planned purchase of Aptiv’s existing stake. Since then, Hyundai has continued funding Motional, which is rebuilding its robotaxi effort and targeting a driverless Las Vegas service by the end of 2026. That date is a company-stated goal, not a confirmed launch.
What does “close to $1 billion” mean?
The headline refers to two separate parts of Hyundai Motor Group’s 2024 transaction. Motional said Hyundai invested $475 million directly in the company on May 2, 2024. TechCrunch reported that Hyundai also planned to pay $448 million to buy Aptiv’s 11% common-equity interest in Motional. Added together, those reported amounts equal $923 million. That sum is a calculation, not a separately reported investment figure, and the share purchase was not new operating capital for Motional.
| 2024 component | Amount | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Direct investment in Motional | $475 million | New funding for Motional, announced by the company in May 2024. |
| Planned purchase of Aptiv’s stake | $448 million | Reported price for Hyundai’s planned purchase of Aptiv’s existing 11% common-equity interest; money paid for shares, not directly into Motional. |
| Combined headline figure | Approximately $923 million | Arithmetic sum of the two reported components, not a standalone investment amount. |
Motional’s May 2024 announcement describes the $475 million investment. TechCrunch’s 2024 report gives the $448 million stake-purchase figure.
How much has Hyundai put into Motional since then?
Aptiv’s SEC filings record a further Hyundai investment of approximately $440 million on May 30, 2025. The filing says that investment reduced Aptiv’s common-equity interest in Motional from approximately 15% to approximately 13%. It also says the 2024 restructuring eliminated Aptiv’s future funding obligations.

These disclosed transactions show Hyundai continued to finance Motional after Aptiv reduced its role. They do not establish Motional’s current cash runway or a commitment by Hyundai to provide additional funding beyond the disclosed amounts. Aptiv describes autonomous-vehicle commercialization timing as extended and uncertain, with additional funding requirements for Motional.
Aptiv’s first-quarter 2026 SEC filing reports the 2025 investment, ownership change and funding uncertainty.
Does Hyundai own Motional now?
Aptiv’s filings show its common-equity interest fell from 50% before the 2024 transactions to approximately 15% after them, then to approximately 13% after Hyundai’s May 2025 investment. Those figures document Aptiv’s changing stake; they do not, by themselves, establish Hyundai’s complete ownership percentage or the current ownership of every class of Motional securities. The available filings therefore support saying Hyundai became the principal continuing funder as Aptiv’s stake declined, not assigning Hyundai an exact total ownership percentage.

Why did Motional pull back from commercial deployments?
In May 2024, Motional said it would concentrate resources on developing and generalizing its core driverless technology, de-emphasize near-term commercial deployments and reduce staff. The company said that “large-scale deployment of AVs remains a goal for the future, not the present.”
Motional also cited its operating experience: it reported more than 100,000 autonomous rides in Las Vegas and thousands of autonomous food deliveries in Los Angeles. Those are company-reported cumulative totals in its May 2024 statement, not independently audited figures in that announcement. The company’s strategic shift was a move away from near-term commercial expansion toward technology development, not evidence that large-scale driverless deployment had already been achieved.

In January 2026, Motional told TechCrunch it had adopted an AI-first approach and was targeting a commercial driverless service in Las Vegas by the end of 2026. The company described a path from a service with a human safety operator to a driverless commercial service. CEO Laura Major told TechCrunch: “And so we made the very hard decision to pause our commercial activities, to slow down in the near term so that we could speed up.”

What does Hyundai’s NVIDIA collaboration add?
In March 2026, Hyundai announced an expanded partnership framework with NVIDIA and said Hyundai Group would advance discussions with NVIDIA through Motional to support Level 4 robotaxi capabilities. Hyundai said the cooperation’s terms and timing remained subject to ongoing discussions and a future definitive agreement. The announcement is evidence of a proposed technology collaboration, not a completed agreement or proof of a Motional service launch.

Hyundai Motor Group executive vice president Heung-Soo Kim said the group would “strengthen our differentiated technological competitiveness — from Level 2 and above autonomous driving technology to Level 4 robotaxi services.” Hyundai’s March 16, 2026 announcement sets out the framework and its unresolved terms.
Quick Recap
What the funding says—and does not say
- It shows continued financial backing: Hyundai disclosed direct investments in Motional in 2024 and 2025, while Aptiv’s role and equity interest declined.
- It reflects a long-horizon technology bet: Motional shifted resources toward core driverless technology as it acknowledged large-scale deployment was not yet the near-term goal.
- It does not prove commercial success or failure: The filings describe an extended, uncertain commercialization timeline but do not establish Motional’s cash runway, solvency or eventual outcome.
- The Las Vegas date remains a target: Motional’s end-of-2026 ambition should not be read as a completed launch or guaranteed schedule.
