Hyundai unveiled INITIUM on October 31, 2024, as a hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) concept and preview of a future production vehicle. Its announced range and output were concept targets, not certified or independently tested results. In April 2025, Hyundai introduced the all-new NEXO, a production FCEV it says is based on INITIUM.
What was Hyundai’s INITIUM?
INITIUM was a concept vehicle revealed at Hyundai’s “Clearly Committed” event at Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang in South Korea. Hyundai said the name means “beginning” or “first” in Latin, and presented the vehicle as a preview of a new production FCEV.
The concept introduced Hyundai’s “Art of Steel” design language. The company described its shape as more SUV-like, with design cues associated with HTWO. SangYup Lee, Hyundai Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design, said in the company’s release: “With INITIUM, we’ve crafted a more SUV-like design that is both solid and safe, reflecting our dedication to our customers through ‘customer-centric design’.” Hyundai’s October 31, 2024 reveal provides the company’s account of the concept.
What performance did Hyundai announce for INITIUM?
Hyundai announced a targeted driving range of more than 650 km and maximum motor output of 150 kW. The range was an estimate calculated using Hyundai’s target fuel economy and tested with an 18-inch tire. These are manufacturer-stated concept figures, not certification results or independent road-test measurements.

Hyundai also described a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function that could power or charge appliances and personal devices. The concept’s outdoor terminal was designed to connect directly to a 220V household outlet. Hyundai listed front multi-skeleton and side-body structures, along with nine airbags, as part of the concept’s safety approach; those design details are not crash-test ratings.
Is INITIUM going into production?
Hyundai’s production continuation is the all-new NEXO, not a retail model called INITIUM. At the Seoul Mobility Show on April 3, 2025, Hyundai introduced the all-new NEXO FCEV and explicitly said it was based on the INITIUM concept. In the cited announcements, INITIUM remains the concept’s name, while NEXO is the production vehicle.

How do the INITIUM and NEXO range figures compare?

The figures have different stated contexts: one is a concept estimate and the other is a target for a specific Korean-market production configuration under a named standard. They should not be read as a direct, like-for-like performance comparison. Hyundai’s NEXO announcement also lists up to 6.69 kg of usable hydrogen capacity and a five-minute refueling claim.
