A sensible used-car decision therefore combines the model year’s survey signal with the exact vehicle’s recall status, maintenance records, mileage, configuration and an independent inspection.
The practical takeaway is simple: do not choose a Tucson solely because it is newer, and do not reject one solely because of its year. Verify the 17-character VIN, confirm every recall repair, and judge the individual vehicle’s documented condition.

What the available reliability evidence actually shows
Consumer Reports describes its Tucson reliability assessment as based on its latest subscriber survey of owners. That is a relative, experience-based measure, not a laboratory failure rate or a guarantee for a particular used car. The surfaced model-year reports do not provide a complete ranking for every Tucson year, engine, trim or hybrid configuration, so a definitive “best years” or “years to avoid” list would overstate what is known.

Why model year alone is an incomplete buying filter
Age, mileage and use can outweigh the badge
A Tucson that has accumulated high mileage in stop-and-go traffic, spent winters in a salted region or gone long periods without documented servicing may be a poorer purchase than an older, lower-mileage example with complete records. Conversely, a low-mileage car that sat unused for extended periods can still need attention to its battery, tires, brakes, fluids and seals. Ask how and where the vehicle was used, not just when it was built.
Configuration changes the comparison
Compare like with like. Record the model year, generation, engine and whether the vehicle is a hybrid or PHEV before comparing prices or reliability impressions. The available evidence does not support treating every powertrain and trim as one statistically identical population. Equipment can also determine recall eligibility; the major ABS campaign discussed below excludes certain vehicles equipped with Smart Cruise Control.
Maintenance documentation is direct evidence
Look for dated invoices, inspection sheets and proof of routine service rather than relying on a seller’s verbal assurance. Consistent documentation cannot guarantee future reliability, but missing records increase uncertainty and should affect the price you are willing to pay and the depth of the pre-purchase inspection.

The major ABS-module recall affecting some 2016–2021 Tucsons
What recall 20V-543 covers
NHTSA recall 20V-543 concerns certain U.S.-market Hyundai Tucsons from the 2016 through 2021 model years that were not equipped with Smart Cruise Control. The filing defines vehicles produced from May 19, 2015 through November 16, 2020. It describes an internal electrical short in the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module that could cause an engine-compartment fire while the vehicle is parked or being driven.
NHTSA’s 2020 filing lists 652,024 potentially involved vehicles and an estimated defect rate of 1%. Those are campaign-level estimates for the defined population; they are not the percentage of all Tucsons that will catch fire and do not prove that any particular car is affected.
How to interpret the fire reports
In a Hyundai Motor America FAQ issued in the recall’s reporting context, the company said it knew of 12 related U.S. engine-compartment fires at that time. That is a dated manufacturer statement, not a current total or an incident rate. The same material reported no related U.S. fires among the affected 2016–2018 population at that time, while noting confirmed fires in other regional markets. Keep those geographic and time limits attached to the figures.

Why a year search is not enough
The campaign is conditional on production details and equipment. A generic search for “2018 Tucson recall,” for example, cannot tell you whether a specific vehicle is included or whether its repair has already been completed. The VIN result is the controlling information for a used-car purchase.
A separate ABS recall for some 2014–2015 Tucsons
NHTSA recall 22V-056 identifies a related ABS-module fire risk in certain 2014 and 2015 Tucsons. Hyundai’s owner notice states that the campaign remedy is performed at no charge. Do not buy an ABS replacement part or attempt a home repair to address a safety recall; contact an authorized Hyundai dealer and follow the manufacturer’s recall procedure.
How to check a Tucson before you buy it
- Get the complete VIN. Obtain the 17-character vehicle identification number from the dashboard, driver’s-door label and title or registration. Make sure the numbers agree.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. NHTSA distinguishes an individual VIN or plate result from a general year/make/model search. Review every open safety campaign, not just the ABS-related campaigns.
- Ask for completion records. Request dealer invoices or other documentation showing that each listed campaign was performed. If the seller cannot document the repair, treat the recall as unresolved until a dealer confirms otherwise.
- Call a Hyundai dealer before committing. Give the service department the VIN and ask whether a remedy is currently available, whether parts are in stock and whether the work can be scheduled. Recall remedies identified by the manufacturer are handled through that process.
- Obtain maintenance and repair records. Check for oil and filter services, brake work, tires, battery replacement, fluid services and any drivability or warning-light repairs. Match the mileage and dates to the odometer and vehicle history.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Use a qualified mechanic who is not financially involved in the sale. Ask for a written report covering the vehicle’s condition, signs of collision or water damage, leaks, brakes, tires, suspension, steering, cooling system, electrical operation and scan-tool fault codes. This is a general used-car inspection, not a substitute for the recall remedy.
- Recheck the VIN after purchase. NHTSA states, “Once a vehicle has been recalled, that recall never expires.” Keep the recall confirmation and dealer repair order with the vehicle’s records.
What to examine during the independent inspection
Warning lights, odors and smoke
A lit ABS, traction-control or check-engine warning lamp needs diagnosis before purchase. Burning electrical smells, smoke, heat damage or melted wiring are reasons to stop the inspection and have the vehicle evaluated immediately. Do not drive a vehicle that appears to be overheating or developing an electrical fire risk.

Cold start and road test
Ask the inspector to see the vehicle cold, before the seller has warmed it. Listen for abnormal noises, observe the instrument-panel self-test and verify that warning lamps illuminate briefly and then go out as expected. During a road test, check braking, steering, transmission behavior, acceleration, cruise-control operation and any vibration or pulling. A short drive cannot establish long-term reliability, but it can reveal defects that justify walking away or renegotiating.
Condition versus cosmetic preparation
Fresh detailing, new floor mats or recently applied undercoating can hide the clues you need. Inspect panel gaps, paint overspray, fasteners, underbody damage and fluid leaks in daylight. Compare tire brands and tread wear across axles; uneven wear can indicate alignment, suspension or accident-related problems.

Paying more for a newer year makes sense only when the individual car also has a clean history, completed recalls and sound inspection results. A lower price is not a bargain if it merely reflects deferred safety work or undocumented repairs.
Using the year-by-year signals without creating a “best year” list
The surfaced ratings are most useful as a starting order for your investigation. A 2017 or 2019 Tucson deserves closer scrutiny because the relative survey signal is unfavorable, but a well-maintained example with a clean VIN and inspection may still be reasonable. A 2021 result is favorable relative to peers, yet it does not excuse missing service records. The below-peer assessment for 2022 is a reminder that newness alone is not a reliability guarantee. The average 2023 result calls for ordinary due diligence, while the much-above-peer 2024 result should be tempered by its shorter ownership history and the possibility that long-term issues have not had as much time to appear.
For any year, rank candidates by evidence: first eliminate unresolved safety recalls and serious inspection findings, then compare maintenance quality, mileage, configuration and price. This approach uses the survey information without pretending it predicts the future of an individual vehicle.

The recall campaigns and survey references described here are primarily U.S.-market sources. Equipment, production ranges, recall rules and remedies can differ in Canada, Europe, Australia and other markets. If you are buying outside the United States, use the relevant national safety agency and Hyundai distributor, and verify the VIN under that market’s system.
No consistent, publicly comparable failure-rate statistic was established for every Tucson model year or powertrain in the available material. Complaint counts and recall-population figures should not be converted into a reliability percentage. Likewise, a Consumer Reports relative assessment is not an engineering test, a warranty-claim rate or an inspection of the vehicle sitting in front of you.
Bottom line for a used-Tucson buyer
Tucson reliability varies by model year in Consumer Reports’ owner-survey assessments, with 2017, 2019 and 2022 showing unfavorable relative signals, 2023 about average, and 2021 and 2024 favorable signals. Those labels help prioritize questions but do not determine a purchase by themselves. The decisive steps are VIN-specific recall verification, confirmation that the manufacturer remedy was completed, complete maintenance records and an independent inspection. Apply that process to every candidate, including a year that looks good on paper.
