Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are different connections
“My Sonata won’t connect” can describe three different functions. Identifying the function first prevents you from repeating the wrong setup.

Bluetooth pairing does not automatically turn on CarPlay or Android Auto. A phone can be paired for calls while projection remains disabled, or projection can be available through a separate USB or wireless connection. Hyundai’s general instructions and its vehicle manuals use different menu names on different systems, so treat the paths below as a reliable starting point rather than a universal screen layout.
Check compatibility before changing settings
Sonata infotainment hardware changed across model years and trims. Hyundai’s device-specific pairing resource lets you select the vehicle year and model and then the phone make and model. Use that selector, or the owner’s or navigation manual for the exact car, when a menu item in this guide is missing.

- Confirm the Sonata model year, trim and infotainment system.
- Install available operating-system updates on the phone. Hyundai advises keeping the phone software current for optimal compatibility.
- Have the phone unlocked and its Bluetooth setting available before beginning.
- Perform setup while parked. The Hyundai navigation manual warns against changing phone settings while driving and against interacting with the phone during projection use.
- For wired projection, have a data-capable USB cable approved by the phone manufacturer and a connector that fits both the phone and the Sonata’s designated port.
Do not assume that a feature documented for one year is present on every Sonata. For example, the 2020 Sonata material documents USB-connected phone integration, while Hyundai’s current U.S. Sonata page presents wireless CarPlay and Android Auto as an equipment- and compatibility-dependent feature. Those statements do not create a complete year-by-year or trim-by-trim compatibility chart.
How to pair a phone with Sonata Bluetooth
Hyundai’s general Bluetooth procedure follows this sequence. The labels can differ on an individual head unit.
- With the vehicle safely parked, press Setup on the infotainment system.
- Open Bluetooth.
- Select Bluetooth Connection.
- Choose Add New. The Sonata enters its device-discovery or pairing state and displays the vehicle name.
- On the phone, turn Bluetooth on and open the list of available devices.
- Select the car name shown on the Sonata screen.
- Compare the passkey shown by the car and phone. Enter or approve it if either device asks. Hyundai’s general guide allows for a passkey but does not establish one universal code for every Sonata.
- Accept the phone’s request to share contacts if you want the vehicle to download them. Some phones require a second confirmation before contact transfer begins.
- Wait for the vehicle to confirm that the connection is complete. If the system offers a priority or preferred-device option, select this phone when you want it to connect automatically ahead of other paired phones.
The first pairing may take a few minutes while contacts are transferred. Keep the phone close to the vehicle and leave both Bluetooth screens undisturbed until the confirmation appears.

If the menu does not match
Some Sonata systems place Bluetooth under a different top-level menu or use a different name for adding a device. Do not guess at a passkey or repeatedly select unrelated settings. Choose the Sonata year and model plus the phone make and model in Hyundai’s Bluetooth pairing and compatibility resource, then follow the displayed vehicle-specific instructions. The corresponding owner or navigation manual is the authoritative reference for that head unit.
How to connect Apple CarPlay
CarPlay needs its own authorization even when the iPhone is already paired over Bluetooth. The following wired sequence is documented in Hyundai’s 2020 Sonata Hybrid navigation manual; later or different systems may show different screens.
- On the iPhone, turn on CarPlay and make sure Siri is enabled.
- On the Sonata, open All Menus → Setup → Device Connections → Apple CarPlay.
- Enable Apple CarPlay in that menu.
- Connect the unlocked iPhone to the Sonata’s compatible USB port with a data-capable cable approved by the phone manufacturer.
- Read the first-use notification on the vehicle and unlock the iPhone when prompted.
- Approve the authorization request on the phone. After recognition, the CarPlay interface should become available on the vehicle display.
The 2020 Sonata model information describes connecting a compatible phone to the USB jack under the floating console. That is a model-year example, not a guarantee that every Sonata has the same port location or wired-only behavior. Hyundai’s current U.S. Sonata page advertises wireless CarPlay on appropriately equipped vehicles, subject to equipment and compatibility. If the exact car supports wireless projection, its manual will describe the wireless enrollment process; do not infer wireless capability from Bluetooth pairing alone.

How to connect Android Auto
Android Auto is also separate from ordinary Bluetooth pairing. In the 2020 Sonata Hybrid navigation manual, the documented wired setup is:

- Enable Android Auto.
- Connect the Android phone to the compatible USB port using a data-capable, phone-manufacturer-approved cable.
- Unlock the phone and review the notification that appears.
- Consent to the requested permissions. After the vehicle recognizes the phone, the Android Auto menu activates.
Android Auto’s available functions depend on the phone, its software and the apps installed. A phone can remain usable for Bluetooth calls even if Android Auto authorization is declined, but app projection will not start until the required consent is granted.
Choosing and checking a USB cable
Bluetooth calls and Bluetooth music do not need a cable. Wired CarPlay or Android Auto does. Match the cable’s phone connector to the phone and its other connector to the Sonata’s projection-capable USB port; a charging-only lead is not sufficient for data projection.

Hyundai’s 2020 Sonata Hybrid navigation manual states: “Using unapproved USB cables may cause a phone projection error or a system malfunction.” Use a cable approved by the phone manufacturer, check both plugs for damage or debris, and connect directly to the vehicle rather than through an unverified adapter or hub. The manual does not specify one cable type for every Sonata, so the vehicle’s port and the phone’s connector determine the correct choice.
Fix common Hyundai Sonata connection problems

Why contacts may not appear even though Bluetooth works
Pairing creates a communication link, but contact transfer is a separate permission and synchronization step. Some phones show a notification asking whether the car may access contacts; others require the owner to confirm the request in Bluetooth settings after pairing. If the prompt is dismissed, calls may still work while the address book remains empty.

- Look for a contacts or phonebook-sharing permission and enable it.
- Return to the vehicle and allow time for synchronization.
- If the list is still incomplete, check the Hyundai compatibility selector for that phone model and consult the vehicle manual for its contact-download controls.
Contact names, special characters and phonebook fields can display differently by phone and head unit. Do not treat a missing contact field as proof that the entire Bluetooth connection failed.

Wired versus wireless projection: what the evidence supports

The 2020 Sonata technical-features material lists Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and USB connection for that model year. It mentions iOS 7 or Android 5.0 or newer in that historical model-year context. Those old minimums should not be presented as current platform requirements; use the phone maker’s current requirements and Hyundai’s vehicle-specific compatibility information instead.
How to avoid setup and safety mistakes
- Pair or authorize devices before driving, not while moving.
- Use the phone’s normal Bluetooth and projection prompts rather than entering an unverified code.
- Do not assume that a successful Bluetooth connection means CarPlay or Android Auto is enabled.
- Use the correct USB port and a data cable approved by the phone manufacturer for wired projection.
- If more than one phone is stored, set the intended phone as the priority device where the head unit provides that control.
- Keep the phone’s operating system current, but check compatibility for the exact vehicle before concluding that a software update will add a feature.
- Stop troubleshooting if the vehicle is moving; Hyundai’s manual specifically cautions against changing phone settings or interacting with the phone during projection use.
When the exact Sonata manual matters
There is no single connection procedure that covers every Sonata. A 2020 Sonata Hybrid navigation system documents the All Menus → Setup → Device Connections path for wired projection, while a newer, suitably equipped Sonata may offer wireless projection. A different trim can also have a different head unit, USB layout or available menu.
Use the exact owner’s or navigation manual when:
- Setup, Bluetooth or Device Connections is absent or renamed.
- The car has multiple USB ports and you are unsure which one supports projection.
- The phone model is not listed or behaves differently from the general instructions.
- Wireless CarPlay or Android Auto is advertised for the vehicle but no enrollment prompt appears.
- You need to remove a stored device, change priority order or manage contact synchronization.
Hyundai’s vehicle-and-phone pairing selector is the best next reference because it narrows the instructions to the selected year, model and handset. If the selector and the in-car manual disagree with a generic web instruction, follow the vehicle-specific documentation.

Bottom line for a Sonata that will not connect
Start with the function you actually need: pair Bluetooth for calls and audio, or separately enable CarPlay or Android Auto for app projection. Put the car in its add-device mode, accept passkey and contact prompts, and use the exact vehicle/phone compatibility guidance when labels differ. For wired projection, use the correct USB port and an approved data cable. If those checks do not resolve the problem, the Sonata’s model-year manual—not a universal reset or a code borrowed from another car—is the appropriate next step.
