Hyundai Security Incident: 2.7 Million Connected Cars, About 2,000 People Potentially Affected

Hyundai clarified that 2.7 million refers to connected vehicles in North America, while about 2,000 people may have had employment-related data affected. Recipients should check their own notice for exact data elements and any Epiq enrollment deadline.

Hyundai clarified that 2.7 million refers to connected vehicles in North America—not people affected by the security incident. Hyundai said approximately 2,000 people, primarily current and former employees of Hyundai AutoEver America (HAEA) and Hyundai Motor America, may have had employment-related data affected. That estimate was reported by HotHardware and is not a regulator-confirmed nationwide total. If you received a notice, your own letter is the best guide to which specific information was involved.

What Hyundai clarified about the incident

HAEA, Hyundai’s IT affiliate, disclosed a cyber incident involving its IT environment. In a clarification reported by HotHardware on November 13, 2025, Hyundai said the widely cited figure of 2.7 million described connected vehicles in North America, not affected people. Hyundai said approximately 2,000 individuals may have had employment-related data affected; they were primarily current and former HAEA and Hyundai Motor America employment-related individuals. The company’s approximate figure should not be read as a final national count confirmed by regulators. HotHardware’s report of Hyundai’s clarification

Early coverage referenced Social Security numbers (SSNs) and driver’s licenses, but the public sample notice does not establish that every recipient had those same details exposed. It identifies the recipient’s name and leaves the affected “Data Elements” individualized. Hyundai’s later clarification describes the affected information as employment-related data. Anyone who received a notice should use that letter—not the sample notice or broad headlines—to identify their own data elements. HAEA’s sample notice filed with California

Incident and notification timeline

Date What the record says
February 22, 2025 Maine’s Attorney General filing lists this as a breach date.
March 1, 2025 HAEA says it became aware of a cyber incident; Maine’s filing gives the same discovery date.
March 2, 2025 Maine’s filing lists this as another breach date. California’s listing also records February 22 and March 2 as event dates.
October 30, 2025 Maine’s filing lists consumer notification on this date. Hyundai’s clarification, as reported by HotHardware, says direct notices were mailed on or about October 30.
November 3, 2025 California’s Attorney General listing records HAEA’s filing/listing date. This state-record date is distinct from the reported mailing date.
November 13, 2025 HotHardware published Hyundai’s clarification about the 2.7 million vehicles and approximately 2,000 people.

The state records describe different things: Maine’s entry reports one affected Maine resident, while California’s listing date is not necessarily the date a recipient’s letter was mailed. Neither should be mistaken for a nationwide affected-person count. Maine Attorney General breach entry · California Attorney General breach listings

What to do if you received a notice

  1. Read the individual notice. Find the section listing your specific data elements, the letter date, the activation code, and the enrollment deadline. The sample notice’s “Data Elements” field is not a list of information exposed for every recipient.
  2. Consider the included Epiq service. HAEA’s notice offers recipients, at their option, complimentary Epiq Privacy Solutions for two years, including three-bureau credit monitoring and identity-protection services. The notice says activation is required within 90 days of the date on the recipient’s letter using a unique code. Check your own letter for eligibility and deadline; the window may have passed for some recipients. The Massachusetts filing also describes the two-year offer. Massachusetts notice filing
  3. Watch for unfamiliar activity. Review relevant financial accounts and credit files for transactions or accounts you do not recognize. Monitoring can help surface issues, but it does not establish that misuse has occurred or prevent every form of identity theft.
  4. Consider a fraud alert or credit freeze if appropriate. FTC guidance to businesses responding to breaches recommends considering support such as credit monitoring or identity-theft protection, particularly when financial information or SSNs were exposed. The FTC also advises people to consider a fraud alert if they do not place a credit freeze. These are general options, not Hyundai-specific findings or requirements. FTC data breach response guidance

The Epiq offer is the specific no-cost support identified in HAEA’s notice. The available records do not establish that a paid monitoring product is necessary, nor do they verify prices or support a comparison of commercial services.

What HAEA says it did

HAEA’s sample notice says the company began investigating after learning of the incident, took immediate steps to terminate the unauthorized party’s access to the affected part of its environment, engaged third-party cybersecurity specialists, analyzed available data and forensic information, and continued security enhancements. These are the response steps described in the notice; they do not, by themselves, identify what data any individual recipient had exposed. HAEA sample notice
