Hyundai has unveiled the Boulder Concept, a rugged, SUV-shaped 4×4 design study, but it has not announced a production Boulder SUV or a confirmed Ford Bronco rival. The concept previews the styling and body-on-frame architecture of a future U.S. midsize pickup; Hyundai says the concept itself is not available for sale.
What is the Hyundai Boulder Concept?
Boulder is an SUV-shaped concept vehicle Hyundai revealed at the 2026 New York International Auto Show. Hyundai presents it as a design study for a rugged off-road vehicle, while its broader purpose is to preview the look and body-on-frame architecture of a future midsize pickup for the U.S. market. The announcement describes the pickup—not a production Boulder SUV—as the planned vehicle.
Hyundai’s reveal announcement calls Boulder a concept and design study. The official U.S. concept page explicitly says: “Concept vehicle shown. Not available for sale.”
What features did Hyundai show?
The announced details describe the concept as displayed; they are not confirmed specifications for a production vehicle.

- Utility details: The concept has safari windows and a double-hinged tailgate that opens from either side.
Hyundai has not established that these details will carry over to a production pickup or any future SUV. The announcement does not provide Boulder production powertrain, price, towing capacity, payload rating, or trim information.
Is Hyundai making a Ford Bronco rival?
Not on the evidence of this announcement. “Bronco-fighting” is a comparison in the headline, not a confirmed Hyundai product plan. Boulder is a concept SUV, and Hyundai has described the production-bound direction as a future midsize pickup. There is no announced production Boulder SUV or confirmed direct Bronco competitor.

The concept’s off-road styling makes the comparison understandable, but the available information does not support ranking it against the Bronco. A meaningful comparison would require confirmed production specifications such as price, powertrain, four-wheel-drive hardware, ground clearance, approach and departure angles, towing and payload ratings, tire fitment, and availability.
When is Hyundai’s future midsize pickup due?
Hyundai’s official U.S. concept page says the future midsize truck is due in 2029, while its reveal announcement says the pickup is due by 2030. Those sources give different timing descriptions, so neither should be treated as a single settled launch date. The dates refer to the future pickup, not to a production Boulder SUV.

What Hyundai says about the concept
SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design Center, described the idea behind Boulder this way: “Our body-on-frame Boulder Concept SUV is a four-wheeled love letter to the dynamic, off-road way of life that many customers have been asking us for in our future-focused research. We are confident that something like this ultra-capable Hyundai SUV concept could more than fulfill the needs of this exclusive group of adventure seekers.”
The statement expresses Hyundai’s design intent; it does not confirm that the SUV will enter production. The announcement’s production direction remains a future midsize pickup.
