For the 2025 U.S. model year, the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV are close but not identical. The Kona SEL and Limited have the higher EPA-estimated range at 261 miles, while the Niro EV is rated at 253 miles in both Wind and Wave trims. The Kona offers more cargo room with the rear seats upright; both vehicles list the same maximum cargo volume with the seats folded. Kia lists a fraction more rear legroom. Published charging estimates are nearly the same, although Hyundai and Kia use different charge windows in their specifications.

The right choice depends on the exact trim, how often you carry passengers or cargo, access to 240-volt home charging, and the public chargers available on your regular routes. The comparison below uses matched 2025 U.S. specifications wherever possible and identifies the separate 2026 Niro EV information.

At a glance: which EV is ahead?

  • Longest rated range: 2025 Kona Electric SEL and Limited, at 261 EPA-estimated miles. The Kona SE is rated at 200 miles and N Line at 230 miles, so the Kona nameplate does not guarantee more range than the Niro.
  • Most cargo space with seats up: Kona Electric, with 25.5 cubic feet versus 22.8 cubic feet for the Niro EV.
  • Maximum cargo space: A tie at 63.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.
  • Rear-seat legroom: Niro EV, at 36.9 inches versus 36.4 inches in the Kona. The half-inch difference is small enough that a personal seating check matters more than the specification alone.
  • Charging: The long-range Kona trims list about 43 minutes for a 10–80% DC fast charge on a 100-kW charger. Kia lists 45 minutes at 100 kW for an 80% DC charge. Both publish 6 hours 5 minutes for a full AC charge under their stated conditions, but the Hyundai and Kia figures use different starting and ending percentages or equipment descriptions.

These are manufacturer specifications and EPA estimates, not results from an independent head-to-head road test. Actual range and charging speed vary with temperature, battery state, charger performance, driving conditions, vehicle configuration, and battery age.

2025 range: Kona trim determines the result

Hyundai publishes four EPA-estimated range figures for the 2025 Kona Electric. Kia lists one range figure for each of its two 2025 Niro EV trims. That makes a trim-by-trim comparison essential.

Vehicle and trim EPA-estimated range How to interpret it
2025 Hyundai Kona Electric SE 200 miles Lowest-range Kona configuration
2025 Hyundai Kona Electric SEL 261 miles 8 miles higher than the Niro EV rating
2025 Hyundai Kona Electric N Line 230 miles 23 miles lower than the Niro EV rating
2025 Hyundai Kona Electric Limited 261 miles 8 miles higher than the Niro EV rating
2025 Kia Niro EV Wind 253 miles Same published rating as the Wave
2025 Kia Niro EV Wave 253 miles Same published rating as the Wind

Hyundai’s official 2025 specifications provide the Kona figures by trim: SE 200 miles, SEL 261 miles, N Line 230 miles, and Limited 261 miles (Hyundai 2025 Kona Electric specifications). Kia America’s 2025 model-year announcement and Kia’s specifications list 253 miles for both Niro EV trims (Kia 2025 Niro EV announcement; Kia 2025 Niro EV specifications).

What the numbers mean on a trip

The Kona SEL and Limited have an 8-mile EPA advantage over either Niro trim, a modest difference that may provide a little extra flexibility between charging stops. The Kona N Line gives up 23 rated miles to the Niro, while the SE gives up 53. A buyer comparing a Kona N Line or SE with a Niro should not assume that Hyundai has the longer-legged vehicle.

EPA estimates are standardized figures for comparing vehicles, not a promise of a particular trip distance. Hyundai and Kia both identify factors such as speed, weather, terrain, driving habits, battery age, vehicle condition, and equipment configuration as influences on achieved range. Cold temperatures, sustained highway speeds, heavy loads, roof accessories, and heating use can reduce the distance available in everyday driving. For a planned trip, check charging locations along the actual route and leave a buffer rather than planning to arrive at zero percent.

Cargo and passenger space

The Kona has an advantage when the rear seat is in use, while both vehicles publish the same maximum volume after folding the rear seats.

Measurement 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric 2025 Kia Niro EV Practical meaning
Cargo volume, rear seats upright 25.5 cu. ft. 22.8 cu. ft. Kona lists 2.7 cu. ft. more room for groceries, luggage, or a stroller without folding the second row.
Cargo volume, rear seats folded 63.7 cu. ft. 63.7 cu. ft. Published maximum cargo capacity is identical.
Rear legroom 36.4 in. 36.9 in. Niro lists 0.5 inch more rear legroom.

Hyundai reports the Kona measurements in its 2025 specification sheet (Hyundai 2025 Kona Electric specifications). Kia’s 2025 specifications list 22.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats, 63.7 cubic feet with them folded, and 36.9 inches of rear legroom (Kia 2025 Niro EV specifications).

Choosing between seats-up and seats-folded capacity

The seats-up figure is the more useful number for families or anyone who regularly carries four or five people. It describes the cargo space available without sacrificing a rear seating position. On those terms, the Kona’s published 25.5 cubic feet gives it the clearer advantage.

The folded figure matters when you carry long or bulky items and can use the vehicle as a two-person hauler. Because both list 63.7 cubic feet, neither has a specification-based advantage in maximum volume. Real-world loading can still differ because of the opening shape, floor height, seat-fold angle, and the size of the items you carry. Measure a frequently transported object or bring it to a dealer before purchase.

Rear-seat comfort is too close to call on paper

The Niro’s 36.9 inches of rear legroom is only half an inch more than the Kona’s 36.4 inches. That difference may be noticeable for a particular passenger or front-seat position, but it is not enough to establish a universal comfort winner. Sit in the second row behind the driver and front passenger positions you actually use. Check knee clearance, foot space under the front seat, door opening, cushion height, visibility, and how easily a child seat can be installed.

Charging times and what each figure measures

Both vehicles support home AC charging and public DC fast charging. The published estimates are close, but they are not perfectly apples-to-apples because Hyundai and Kia specify different charge windows.

Charging situation 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric 2025 Kia Niro EV
DC fast charging Approximately 43 minutes from 10–80% on a 100-kW charger for the cited long-range trims 45 minutes at 100 kW to reach 80%
AC charging 6 hours 5 minutes from 10–100% for the cited long-range trims; 11-kW onboard charger listed 6 hours 5 minutes at 11 kW for a full charge

Hyundai’s 2025 overview and specifications describe the long-range Kona charging estimate as approximately 43 minutes for 10–80% DC charging on a 100-kW charger and list a 6-hour-5-minute 10–100% Level II time for those trims (Hyundai 2025 Kona Electric overview; Hyundai 2025 Kona Electric specifications). Kia lists 45 minutes at 100 kW for an 80% DC charge and 6 hours 5 minutes at 11 kW for a full AC charge in its 2025 specifications (Kia 2025 Niro EV specifications).

Why a public fast-charge session may take longer

A charger rated at 100 kW does not force the car to accept 100 kW throughout the session. Charging power typically changes as the battery fills, and the vehicle may reduce power when the battery is cold or hot. The starting state of charge, battery temperature, charger sharing, station limits, and other vehicles using the site can all change the result. The Kona’s 10–80% estimate and the Niro’s 80%-target estimate also leave out the time needed to reach a completely full battery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For road trips, an 80% stop is often the relevant comparison because the final portion of a DC session can be slower. Plan the stop around the charger’s actual output and your route, not just the headline minutes. If a station is limited to 50 kW, the published 100-kW estimates do not apply.

Home AC charging: the equipment is separate

Hyundai says Level 2 home charging requires specialized equipment sold separately. In practical terms, that means a 240-volt Level 2 EVSE, an appropriate circuit, and installation that meets local electrical requirements. The vehicle’s 11-kW onboard charger sets an upper limit on how quickly it can convert AC power; installing a higher-rated EVSE does not make the Kona charge beyond the car’s onboard capability.

Before buying equipment, confirm the vehicle connector, the EVSE’s amperage, the available electrical capacity, cable reach, indoor or outdoor placement, and whether a licensed electrician or local permit is required. A standard household outlet can add range more slowly, but it may be sufficient for low daily mileage. Level 2 is more useful when the car must replenish a larger amount overnight.

DC fast charging, adapters, and battery-care guidance

Home AC and public DC charging serve different purposes. AC charging is usually the economical routine option when the car sits for hours. DC fast charging is intended for highway stops or situations where waiting several hours is impractical.

Kia America states on its 2026 Niro EV product page: “Frequent use of DC fast charging can negatively impact battery performance and durability, and Kia recommends minimizing use of DC fast charging.” That is Kia’s manufacturer guidance, not an independent finding that establishes a specific degradation rate for every vehicle or use pattern (Kia 2026 Niro EV product page).

The same 2026 Kia page says its NACS adapter is sold separately, subject to availability, and intended for compatible fast-charging stations and Kia EVs. Do not assume that an adapter works with every model year, every station, or every vehicle without checking the specific compatibility information. For a 2025 purchase, verify the connector and station access offered for the exact vehicle before relying on a particular network for a trip.

2025 versus 2026: avoid mixing model years

The directly comparable specifications above are for the 2025 Kona Electric and 2025 Niro EV. Kia’s current U.S. product page is for the 2026 Niro EV, which continues to list a 253-mile EPA-estimated range. It also lists a 43-minute 10–80% DC charge, 36.9 inches of rear legroom, and 63.7 cubic feet of folded cargo capacity (Kia 2026 Niro EV product page).

Those 2026 Niro figures should not be silently combined with the 2025 Kona data as though they were a matched-year test. A 2026 U.S. Kona Electric specification set is not established here. When shopping new or used, confirm the model year on the window sticker, vehicle identification number, inventory listing, and manufacturer specifications. Equipment, software, pricing, incentives, charging access, and availability can change by model year and region.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the Kona Electric SEL or Limited when range and seats-up cargo are priorities

The long-range Kona trims combine the highest published range in this comparison—261 miles—with the larger 25.5-cubic-foot cargo area behind the rear seats. That pairing suits drivers who make frequent longer trips and still need the second row available for passengers or child seats. The 8-mile range advantage over the Niro is useful but not transformative; it should be weighed against local inventory, price, equipment, and charging access.

Choose the Niro EV when rear-seat legroom or a single consistent range rating matters

Both 2025 Niro trims are rated at 253 miles, and the Niro lists 36.9 inches of rear legroom. Buyers who regularly carry taller rear passengers may prefer its seating position after an in-person check. The Niro does not give up maximum folded cargo volume, since both vehicles list 63.7 cubic feet.

Look carefully at the Kona SE and N Line

The SE’s 200-mile rating and N Line’s 230-mile rating are below the Niro’s 253 miles. These Kona trims may still fit a buyer whose daily driving is short and whose home charging is dependable, but they are not the range leaders in this comparison. Compare the actual sticker and trim rather than relying on a general statement that one model has more range.

For frequent highway travel, compare the route before the badge

Charging-station density and reliability can matter more than an 8-mile EPA difference. Map the routes you drive most often, identify the charging sites at realistic intervals, and check whether the stations offer the power level assumed by the published estimate. Include an alternate site for weather, congestion, or an occupied stall. A vehicle with slightly lower rated range may be easier to use if its regular route has better charging coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Write down the exact trim and model year. For the Kona, distinguish SE, SEL, N Line, and Limited. For the Niro, distinguish Wind and Wave. Do not compare a 2025 specification with a 2026 listing without labeling the difference.
  2. Match the range to your driving pattern. Use the EPA figure as a common benchmark, then account for winter temperatures, highway speed, hills, passengers, cargo, and a safety buffer.
  3. Measure your normal load. Test the cargo area with the seats up if you carry passengers, and fold the seats to confirm the opening can accept long or tall items.
  4. Put rear passengers in the car. Check seating position, knee clearance, child-seat fit, door access, and visibility rather than treating the half-inch published legroom difference as decisive.
  5. Audit home electrical capacity. Determine whether a 240-volt circuit is available, where the EVSE would be mounted, and what installation work and permits local rules require.
  6. Compare charging windows consistently. Note the starting percentage, target percentage, charger power, and whether the estimate is for AC or DC. A 10–80% figure is not the same measurement as 10–100%.
  7. Verify public-charging compatibility. Confirm connector requirements, station access, payment, route coverage, and any adapter limitations for the specific model year.
  8. Check the actual vehicle. Inventory, regional equipment, software, incentives, and delivery timing can change. Use the window sticker and current manufacturer information for the vehicle you can buy.

Bottom line

For matched 2025 U.S. figures, the Kona Electric SEL and Limited are the range leaders, and the Kona has more usable cargo volume with the rear seats upright. The Niro EV offers slightly more published rear legroom, while both tie for maximum folded cargo capacity. Charging estimates are close, but Hyundai’s 10–80% and Kia’s 80%-target figures should not be treated as identical tests. Select the exact trim that fits your range needs, confirm passenger and cargo fit in person, and make sure your home and route charging plans work before choosing between them.
