The work fits Hyundai’s established Racing Midship (RM) program, which has used prototypes to test performance technologies rather than announce retail models.
What Hyundai’s reported engine development means
On October 17, 2025, Autoblog reported that an engineer discussed development of a dedicated RM engine alongside a new Genesis engine, with attention to emissions reduction, efficient combustion, and lightweight design. The report is secondary: the original interview video and the engineer’s exact role and context are not established here. It does not identify the engine’s configuration or specifications, name a vehicle for it, or say that a production decision has been made. Read Autoblog’s report.
That distinction matters: development of an engine or test program is not the same as approval to sell a car. The cited report does not provide a launch date, price, or confirmed destination for the powertrain.
What the RM program is
RM stands for Racing Midship. Hyundai says Project RM began in 2012 to develop high-performance technologies for future N cars. Its prototypes were road-tested to validate technologies, and the program explored a midship-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. What Hyundai’s prototypes show
RM19: a combustion-powered testbed
Hyundai introduced the RM19 in 2019 as a two-seat, mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive prototype and development platform. The company described its TCR-derived 2.0-liter turbo engine as producing approximately 390 horsepower. That figure belongs to the RM19 prototype; it is not a specification for the newly reported engine. Hyundai said the RM19 signaled future potential, including a potential brand-halo car, but did not announce a production commitment. Hyundai’s RM19 announcement.
RM electrification: the program is not combustion-only
Hyundai’s rolling labs have also explored electric powertrains. The RM20e was the first electrified RM prototype with midship electric technology, while Hyundai describes RN22e as based on its E-GMP platform. Is Hyundai making a mid-engine sports car?
There is no confirmed production car in the cited material. Hyundai has made and tested mid-engine prototypes, and the 2025 report describes engine-development work, but neither establishes a retail model, timing, or final powertrain. It is reasonable to see a possible future performance application as speculation; it is not accurate to present a Genesis mid-engine car or an N-badged road car as Hyundai’s announced plan.
Hyundai’s description of the RM platform helps explain why prototype work does not automatically imply a showroom model. At the RM19 announcement, then-head of global research and development Albert Biermann called it “a versatile engineering testbed,” used to evaluate different powertrains and performance levels on normal roads and in normal environments. A testbed can develop technologies without committing the company to a particular production vehicle.
