To route a wire through a car dashboard, first trace a safe path from its starting point to its endpoint, then use a suitable factory firewall grommet if one is available. Guide the wire gently, protect it wherever it passes sheet metal, and secure it clear of pedals, sharp edges, heat, and moving parts. Exact access points vary by vehicle, so inspect both sides before committing to a route.
Plan the route before feeding the wire
Identify where the wire starts and where it needs to end. Inspect the route from inside the cabin and, if it crosses the firewall, from the engine bay as well. The location and available space around factory pass-throughs vary by make, model, and year; wire thickness and the components at each end also affect what route will work.
Before routing, make sure the wire will not enter the driver’s foot area or interfere with pedals, steering components, sharp edges, hot surfaces, or moving parts. If the proposed route passes near a pillar, airbag, or another safety system, follow the vehicle-specific service procedure rather than relying on a generic path.
Choose a firewall pass-through
Use a suitable factory grommet when possible
An existing factory grommet or pass-through is usually the first option to investigate. Check that it has room for the wire and that adding it will not compromise the seal or disturb the factory harness. Installation guidance from Banks Power treats a new firewall opening as a fallback when existing routes are not usable.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact, rugged design can be easily carried and stored
- 15 foot flat steel wire tape fishes under carpets, down walls and over ceilings
- Low-memory tape does not curl during extension - perfect for non-conduit situations
- Durable. High-impact housing resists breaking
A flexible pull aid can help guide the wire through an existing grommet. Banks describes using a wire coat hanger to pull a harness through an OEM gasket, while cautioning against damaging the gasket or harness. Crutchfield’s installation demonstration also shows using a coat hanger through a small opening in the rubber beside factory wires. Work gently, avoid cutting or scraping nearby wiring, and stop if the aid catches or the route resists. A purpose-made wire-pulling tool is another option; choose one that fits the opening and can reach without forcing its way through.
Make a new opening only if needed
If no suitable factory pass-through is available, verify the proposed spot from both sides before drilling. Check for wiring, electrical components, lines, and other obstructions; the visible cabin surface alone does not show what may be behind the sheet metal. If you cannot confirm clearance on both sides, do not drill there.

- Durable, high carbon 1/4-Inch wide spring steel fish tapes are firm yet flexible
- New protective coating reduces non-contact moisture and humidity but keeps the steel dry to touch
- Laser etched markings in 1-Foot (0.3 m) descending increments allow you to more accurately measure the length of conduit runs and determine the amount of tape left to pay out
- Slim-profile plastic tip navigates easily and reduces catching
- Optimized design of the tape housing decreases payout effort; compact size makes it a staple for your everyday tool bag
Use an opening sized for a correctly fitted automotive grommet, and deburr the edges on both sides before installing it. Bare or rough sheet metal can abrade wire insulation; a grommet keeps the wire from rubbing directly against the edge and helps reduce the risk of a short. See Crutchfield’s amplifier wiring guidance and Banks Power’s installation instructions.

- Disconnect the battery’s negative terminal when appropriate. For electrical installation work, this helps reduce the risk of shorts or shocks. Follow the vehicle and equipment instructions, since disconnecting a battery can affect vehicle systems.
- Feed the pull aid through the chosen pass-through. Guide it carefully beside, not through, factory wiring. Do not force it against the grommet or harness.
- Attach and draw the wire through gently. Keep the wire from snagging, kinking, or pulling the grommet out of place. Stop and reassess if it catches.
- Check the pass-through and wire. Confirm the grommet remains seated and the wire insulation has not been cut or scraped. Any wire crossing sheet metal must be protected from the edge.
- Secure the wire along the route. Use suitable retainers or cable ties to keep it away from pedals, the driver’s feet, sharp edges, hot surfaces, and moving parts. Do not leave loose slack in the footwell where it could catch a foot.
Crutchfield advises disconnecting the negative battery terminal for amplifier wiring, and ARB’s compressor guide likewise calls for disconnecting the negative terminal for wiring and securing loom wiring with cable ties. Apply the instructions for the specific vehicle and equipment.

Compare the practical options
| Option | When it may fit | Main checks and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Existing factory grommet | When it has sufficient room for the wire and the route reaches the endpoint. | Inspect both sides; preserve the seal and factory harness. Avoid forcing a wire or pull aid through a tight opening. |
| New firewall opening | Only when a suitable existing route is unavailable. | Verify clearance on both sides, deburr the hole, and fit a correctly sized grommet. Drilling adds risk if hidden components or lines are missed. |
| Pull aid | Useful considerations |
|---|---|
| Wire coat hanger | Can help guide or pull wire through a suitable opening, but its stiffness and exposed end can damage nearby wiring or the grommet if mishandled. |
| Purpose-made wire-pulling tool | May suit a particular opening, reach, and cable better; select a tool with appropriate flexibility and size. No tool is established as best for every vehicle or route. |
When the route is not clear
- The pull aid catches: Stop instead of pushing harder. Withdraw it carefully and inspect the route; it may be contacting the grommet, factory wiring, or an obstruction.
- The factory grommet has no safe spare space: Do not cut factory wires or enlarge the opening blindly. Look for another suitable factory route or have a qualified installer identify a safe pass-through.
- You cannot inspect both sides of a proposed hole: Do not drill based on the cabin view alone. Hidden wiring, lines, or components may be in the way.
- The route approaches an airbag or safety-system area: Use the service procedure for the exact vehicle. Generic routing instructions do not establish an airbag-safe path.
