There is no universally cheaper lease between the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Tesla Model Y. The winner depends on your state, trim, annual mileage, credit tier, incentives and the cash required at signing. Because no current, same-term offer pair is available, the reliable method is to obtain written quotes for both vehicles using identical lease terms and compare the complete contract—not the advertised monthly payment.
For a fair decision, compare the after-tax monthly payment, total due at signing, acquisition and dealer fees, disposition fee, mileage allowance and excess-mile charge, incentives and eligibility conditions, and the purchase option. Then weigh the vehicles’ different strengths: the IONIQ 5 offers conventional controls, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an 800-volt charging system; the Model Y offers more cargo capacity and Tesla’s integrated charging experience.

Which is cheaper to lease: the IONIQ 5 or Model Y?
Only matched, current offers can answer that question for an individual shopper. Lease pricing changes by region, inventory, model year, trim, term, mileage, credit approval and manufacturer programs. A payment advertised for one vehicle cannot be compared with another vehicle’s payment unless those variables match.
Ask each retailer for a written worksheet for the same term—such as 24, 36 or 39 months—and the same annual mileage, such as 10,000 or 12,000 miles. Request the exact trim and drivetrain, not merely “IONIQ 5” or “Model Y.” Have the quote show taxes, registration, acquisition and documentation fees, rebates, the residual value, money factor or equivalent finance charge, disposition fee and any purchase-option price.

The amount due at signing matters as much as the monthly figure. A large down payment can reduce the advertised payment while increasing the cash you risk if the vehicle is stolen or totaled early in the lease. Ask whether the quoted amount includes the first payment, security deposit, acquisition fee, registration, taxes and dealer add-ons.
What the available advertised example does—and does not—show
A Houston Hyundai search result displayed a September 2026 IONIQ 5 example at $319 per month for 24 months with $4,999 due at signing on a Standard Range RWD vehicle. The offer was subject to approval, excluded additional charges and ended September 30, 2026. It is not a live October price and cannot establish that the IONIQ 5 is cheaper than a Model Y. No comparable current Tesla lease payment was established.
Use expired advertisements only to learn how automakers present payment and drive-off figures. Do not reuse them as current offers or assume that a federal tax-credit statement appearing in an older comparison still applies to a new lease.

Put both dealers’ or manufacturers’ worksheets in one table. If a field is missing, ask for it in writing rather than inferring it from the payment.
| Item | What to request | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle | Model year, trim, drivetrain, options and stock number or vehicle identification number | Range, residual value, equipment and incentives can differ substantially. |
| Term and mileage | Months and total or annual miles | A 24-month/10,000-mile quote is not comparable with a 36-month/12,000-mile quote. |
| Monthly payment | Payment including all applicable taxes | Some advertisements show a pre-tax payment. |
| Amount due at signing | Itemized cash required on delivery | Reveals whether the low payment is being purchased with a large upfront contribution. |
| Capitalized-cost reduction | Any down payment or rebate applied to reduce the amount financed | Upfront money can be at risk if the lease ends early. |
| Acquisition and dealer fees | Each fee and whether it is paid upfront or financed | These charges can add materially to total cost. |
| Disposition fee | Amount due when returning the vehicle, if any | It may apply even when the vehicle is returned in acceptable condition. |
| Excess-mile charge | Per-mile rate and the included allowance | Driving beyond the allowance can cost more than expected. |
| Residual or purchase option | End-of-lease purchase price and purchase-option fee | Needed if you might keep the vehicle. |
| Incentives | Rebate name, amount, expiration and eligibility | Loyalty, conquest, military and credit-tier conditions may remove an advertised discount. |
Calculating a useful total
For a simple comparison, add the scheduled payments to the amount due at signing and any required end-of-lease fee. If the due-at-signing amount includes the first payment, do not add that first payment again. Include taxes and mandatory fees, but separate refundable security deposits from nonrefundable charges. Divide the resulting cash outlay by the lease term to see the effective monthly cost.

- COVERED TRASH & STORAGE BIN: Provides a dedicated place for tissues, wrappers, receipts and other small everyday trash. It can also be used to organize charging cables, sunglasses and other small belongings when needed.
- FLIP-TOP LID FOR EVERYDAY USE: The covered design keeps small trash contained inside the bin while maintaining a clean center console appearance. Press the designated lid area gently to open or close; avoid forcing or prying the latch mechanism.
- USES THE LOWER CONSOLE SPACE: Fits into the matching space between the center console areas while maintaining access around the surrounding USB port. The vehicle-specific shape adds useful storage without adhesive or permanent modification.
- DROP-IN & REMOVABLE DESIGN: No drilling, screws, tape or clips required. Align the bin with the matching console position and place it directly into the vehicle. Remove the entire bin whenever emptying or cleaning is needed.
Also calculate the cost per allowed mile when the mileage allowances differ. A lower payment with 10,000 miles per year may be a poor fit for someone who drives 15,000 miles. Ask whether extra miles can be purchased in advance at a lower rate and whether unused miles receive any credit; the contract controls.
2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5: price, range and charging context
Hyundai Motor America lists an estimated $35,000 starting MSRP for the 2026 IONIQ 5. That manufacturer estimate excludes freight, tax, title and license, and Hyundai describes displayed pricing as nonbinding. MSRP is not a lease payment: the lease depends on the negotiated capitalized cost, residual value, finance charge, fees and incentives.
| 2026 IONIQ 5 detail | Published figure or qualification |
|---|---|
| Estimated starting MSRP | $35,000, excluding freight, tax, title and license; manufacturer estimate |
| EPA-estimated range | 245 miles for SE Standard Range RWD to 318 miles for several long-range RWD trims |
| Other configurations | AWD and XRT range estimates differ from the listed RWD figures |
| DC fast charging | About 20 minutes from 10% to 80% on a 350-kW, 800-volt DC charger, subject to conditions |
| Supercharger access | Hyundai says the 2026 vehicle includes a CCS adapter for access to compatible Tesla Superchargers |
The range figures are EPA estimates for specific trims, not a guarantee of real-world distance. Cold weather, speed, payload, terrain, tire choice and climate control can reduce driving range. Verify the exact trim on the lease worksheet because Standard Range, long-range RWD, AWD and XRT versions do not have identical estimates.
Why the IONIQ 5’s charging specification matters
The IONIQ 5’s 800-volt architecture can support a rapid 10–80% session when the vehicle, charger and battery conditions align. Hyundai’s approximately 20-minute estimate assumes a 350-kW DC charger; a lower-power station, a cold or hot battery, a busy site or charging limits can make the stop longer.
Hyundai says the 2026 IONIQ 5 includes a CCS adapter for Supercharger access. Confirm that the specific leased vehicle includes the adapter, that the station is open to the vehicle, and that the route-planning or payment process works in your area. Public-network access is not the same as guaranteed availability at every location.

2026 Tesla Model Y: what is comparable and what is not
The most useful published comparison is not a matched current lineup test. Edmunds’ May 2025 comparison, distributed by The Associated Press, examined a 2026 Model Y Long Range AWD alongside a 2025 IONIQ 5. Its 327-mile EPA estimate applies to that reviewed Model Y trim, not every Model Y version or future configuration.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not place the 327-mile figure beside the entire 2026 IONIQ 5 range and call it a definitive model-versus-model result. The IONIQ 5 figures discussed in the comparison span 245 to 318 miles depending on variant, while Hyundai’s 2026 specifications identify the trim-specific estimates listed above.
Tesla’s lease quote should identify the exact Model Y version, drivetrain, wheels, software or equipment included, mileage allowance and residual. A Model Y Long Range AWD quote and an entry-level rear-drive quote represent different vehicles even if both are labeled Model Y.
Cargo, passenger utility and daily usability
In the Edmunds comparison, the reviewed Model Y carried more cargo: 29 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 71.4 cubic feet with the seats folded, plus a 4.1-cubic-foot front trunk. The compared IONIQ 5 measured 26.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 58.5 cubic feet with them folded, with a smaller front trunk.
| Measured in the Edmunds comparison | Model Y reviewed | IONIQ 5 reviewed |
|---|---|---|
| Cargo behind rear seats | 29 cubic feet | 26.3 cubic feet |
| Cargo with rear seats folded | 71.4 cubic feet | 58.5 cubic feet |
| Front trunk | 4.1 cubic feet | Smaller; exact figure not stated in the comparison |
Those measurements come from a dated comparison of specific vehicles. Check the current vehicle’s published dimensions and, if possible, place your stroller, luggage, sports equipment or work gear in the actual vehicle before signing.

Edmunds also highlighted standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the IONIQ 5 and controls that feel more conventional and easier to learn. The Model Y emphasizes a touchscreen-centered interface and integrated technology. Drivers who prefer physical buttons and familiar phone projection may adapt faster to the Hyundai; drivers who prefer a minimalist screen-led cabin may prefer the Tesla.

Home charging
Check whether your home has a suitable electrical circuit, parking access and permission for installation before choosing either lease. Obtain an electrician’s estimate separately from the vehicle quote. Ask the lessor whether installed equipment must remain with the property, whether modifications are permitted and how removal is handled at lease return.
Public charging
Map the stations you actually use for commuting, road trips and overnight stays. Compare connector compatibility, charging speed, payment requirements, idle fees and reliability. The IONIQ 5’s adapter can broaden access to compatible Superchargers, but the exact vehicle and site still need verification. Tesla’s charging ecosystem may be simpler for a driver whose regular routes already use those stations.
Leased-vehicle return
Keep charging cables, adapters and included equipment. Missing equipment can create end-of-lease charges. Photograph the vehicle and accessories at delivery and again before return, and follow the lessor’s inspection process rather than relying on a dealer’s informal estimate.
How to obtain truly comparable quotes
- Choose the use case. Set the required drivetrain, minimum range, annual mileage and lease term before requesting prices.
- Identify the exact vehicles. Record model year, trim, wheels, options and whether the IONIQ 5 is Standard Range, long-range RWD, AWD or XRT, and whether the Model Y is rear-drive, Long Range or another configuration.
- Request itemized worksheets. Ask for selling price, residual, finance charge, taxes, acquisition fee, dealer fee, registration, rebates, due at signing and end-of-lease terms.
- State your credit and eligibility accurately. Ask which credit tier is assumed and whether loyalty, conquest, military, employer or other conditions affect the quote.
- Normalize the cash structure. Request one quote with minimal upfront cash and compare total outlay, not just the payment. If you choose to put money down, show that amount separately.
- Verify mileage terms. Confirm included miles, overage rate, pre-purchase options and whether the contract charges for excess wear or disposition.
- Check the contract before delivery. The signed lease controls. Make sure the vehicle identification number, payment, term, mileage, fees and due-at-signing amount match the worksheet.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing headline payments: A payment may omit tax, registration, dealer fees or a substantial upfront contribution. Compare the complete due-at-signing amount.
- Mixing terms: Different months or mileage allowances can make one payment look artificially low. Match both.
- Assuming a rebate is universal: Conditional incentives may depend on credit tier, loyalty, conquest, military status or another qualification. Have the dealer identify each condition.
- Using MSRP as lease cost: MSRP is only a starting reference. Negotiated price, residual and finance charge determine the lease.
- Ignoring trim-specific range: The 245-mile Standard Range estimate and a 318-mile long-range RWD estimate are not interchangeable. AWD and XRT differ too.
- Treating a dated test as a current specification: The Edmunds figures describe a 2026 Model Y Long Range AWD and 2025 IONIQ 5 comparison, not every current trim.
- Overlooking charging conditions: The IONIQ 5’s approximately 20-minute estimate requires a 350-kW, 800-volt charger and favorable conditions. Real sessions vary.
- Planning to buy without checking the option price: A lease purchase price is set by the contract and may not equal market value at the end of the term.
Which driver should choose each vehicle?
The IONIQ 5 is the better fit when
- You value conventional controls and standard Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Your routes benefit from the vehicle’s 800-volt DC-fast-charging capability and you can verify suitable 350-kW stations.
- You prefer Hyundai’s included CCS-to-Supercharger compatibility for the exact 2026 vehicle you are leasing.
- The matched quote offers a lower total outlay after taxes, fees and upfront cash.
The Model Y is the better fit when
- You regularly carry bulky cargo and the measured vehicle’s larger storage areas are useful.
- Tesla’s touchscreen-centered interface and charging ecosystem suit your habits.
- The exact Model Y quote has a stronger residual, lower fees or better incentives for your location and credit profile.
- You prefer the range and drivetrain of the specific Model Y trim being offered, rather than a generic model label.
Neither preference is a universal verdict. Edmunds described its comparison as a draw, noting that both electric SUVs are strong choices and that the decision comes down to personal preference. That conclusion applies to the tested vehicles and their context; your lease worksheet and charging routine should decide your purchase.
Bottom line for a U.S. lease shopper
Do not declare the IONIQ 5 or Model Y cheaper from an advertisement, MSRP or an older article. Get current written offers for identical term, mileage, trim class and drive-off structure in your state. Compare total scheduled payments plus nonrefundable upfront costs, then account for range, charging access, cargo, controls and the mileage you actually drive. The IONIQ 5 is compelling for conventional usability and fast-charge architecture; the Model Y is compelling for cargo space and Tesla’s integrated technology and charging experience. The lower-cost choice is the one with the better complete contract for your circumstances.
