The key point is to identify whether your Hyundai IONIQ 3 agreement is Personal Contract Hire (PCH) or Personal Contract Purchase (PCP/PML). PCH is a lease: you pay for an agreed term and mileage, then return the car without owning it. The currently visible IONIQ 3 promotion is labelled PCP/PML, so its figures must not be described as a PCH quotation. Your signed Hyundai or finance-provider agreement, rather than an advert, determines the deposit, mileage, insurance responsibility and any end-of-contract charges.
Which IONIQ 3 finance product are you looking at?
Personal Contract Hire (PCH)
Hyundai defines Personal Contract Hire as taking a vehicle for a fixed term and an agreed mileage allowance, making the contracted payments and returning the vehicle at the end. You do not normally acquire ownership through the agreement. The contract sets the initial rental, monthly rentals, duration, annual or total mileage, maintenance arrangements, return procedure and the rate for miles driven above the allowance.

PCH is the product people usually mean when they say they want to “lease” a car. A quoted monthly payment is therefore inseparable from the mileage and term used to calculate it. A low payment based on 6,000 miles a year is not directly comparable with a payment calculated at 10,000 or 12,000 miles.

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP/PML)
The currently visible IONIQ 3 offer is labelled PCP/PML rather than PCH. PCP is a purchase-finance structure with a deposit, scheduled monthly payments and a final optional payment (often called a balloon or optional final payment) if you want to own the car. Returning the vehicle instead of paying that final amount can be possible, but the conditions are those of the PCP agreement, not PCH.

That distinction affects how you interpret mileage, excess-mileage wording, end-of-term choices and ownership. Do not copy a PCP figure into a PCH budget simply because both adverts show a monthly payment and an initial contribution.
What figures are currently shown?
Hyundai Motor UK’s 2026 examples illustrate why the product label matters. They are promotional examples and can change; the agreement you sign is controlling.

The first row is not a PCH quote. The second row is a separate representative PCP example, not evidence of the rate that would apply to a PCH contract. Neither example should be treated as a guaranteed price for every derivative, order date or customer.

There is no single IONIQ 3 lease deposit. The amount is agreement-specific and may be described as an initial rental for PCH or a customer deposit for PCP. Ask the provider to identify the product in writing before comparing the amount.

What to check on the quotation
- Whether the product is PCH, PCP or another finance type.
- Whether the first payment is one rental, several rentals paid in advance or a customer deposit.
- How many monthly payments follow the initial amount.
- Whether administration, delivery, registration or optional-service fees are separate.
- Whether the quoted amount is a temporary promotion tied to an order or registration deadline.
For example, the IONIQ 3 Advance 61kWh promotion shows a £365 customer deposit alongside £365 monthly payments, but that pairing does not turn the offer into PCH. The representative PCP example shows a £355 deposit and £354.72 monthly payments over 49 months. Use those numbers only as the dated examples they are; request a fresh, written calculation for your vehicle derivative and circumstances.
How many miles are included?
The cited IONIQ 3 examples use 6,000 miles per year. Your contract can use a different allowance, and the total permitted mileage depends on the contract length. A four-year agreement at 6,000 miles annually would ordinarily describe 24,000 contracted miles, but your paperwork is the authority if it expresses the allowance differently.
Hyundai’s Contract Hire guidance states: “When you sign a Contract Hire agreement, you agree to a mileage allowance for the length of your contract.” Check whether your document states an annual figure, a total figure or both, and whether the mileage is measured at return.
Can the allowance be changed?
Hyundai says Contract Hire customers with at least six monthly rentals remaining can ask to increase or decrease the allowance. The monthly payment is then recalculated. Approval and the revised price are not automatic, so make the request before you are close to returning the vehicle and obtain the adjustment in writing.

Choosing a realistic allowance
- Add commuting, school runs, regular family visits and routine leisure trips.
- Include expected long journeys, airport trips and seasonal travel rather than relying on your recent average.
- Keep evidence of the mileage estimate you used; an unrealistically low allowance can create a larger final bill than a modestly higher monthly rental.
- Ask how an allowance change affects the payment, the total contract cost and any maintenance package.
What happens if you exceed the mileage?
Excess mileage is normally calculated as the miles above the allowance multiplied by the per-mile rate in your agreement. Hyundai’s cited representative PCP example lists 9.0p per excess mile. That rate must not be assumed for PCH: Hyundai Contract Hire says the applicable per-mile rate is the one written in the customer’s contract.
For illustration, 1,000 miles above an allowance at 9.0p per mile would produce £90. This is arithmetic using the cited PCP rate, not a promise that a PCH customer would receive the same rate. Confirm whether the contract applies VAT, how partial miles are rounded and whether the charge is invoiced at return.
Before accepting a mileage charge
- Read the contracted allowance and excess-mile rate on the signed schedule.
- Record the odometer reading when the vehicle is collected.
- Ask the finance provider for its mileage calculation if the invoice is unclear.
- Compare the invoice with any allowance change you agreed during the contract.
Is insurance included?
Do not assume that insurance is included in an ordinary IONIQ 3 PCH payment. The public IONIQ 3 PCH material cited here does not confirm insurance inclusion, so the quote must state who arranges the policy and who pays for it.
Hyundai’s insurance information lists annual-cover options that can include a courtesy-car benefit, 24-hour accident recovery, comprehensive cover in the European Union, personal-injury cover and windscreen cover, subject to eligibility and the policy wording. Those are insurance features, not proof that your lease payment includes a policy.

Questions for the quote provider and insurer
- Is insurance included, or must I arrange a separate policy?
- What driver ages, occupations, addresses and licence histories are eligible?
- What compulsory and voluntary excesses apply?
- Are commuting, business use, additional drivers and travel outside the UK covered?
- What happens to the lease payment and replacement-car arrangements after an accident or total loss?
Motability’s all-inclusive insurance wording belongs to that separate scheme and should not be generalised to a standard Hyundai PCH agreement.

Returning a leased vehicle does not automatically mean that every final cost is zero. Hyundai Contract Hire identifies several possible charges, depending on the agreement and package.

Damage and fair wear
Hyundai says an independent inspector assesses damage against BVRLA industry-standard guidelines. Damage beyond acceptable limits can be charged. The charge is compensation for the loss rather than a supply of goods or services, and Hyundai states that damage charges are exempt from VAT.

Normal wear is not the same as neglect. Before collection, clean the car, remove personal items, check wheels, glass, lights, paint, upholstery and charging equipment, and photograph each area in good light. Keep service records and receipts for work that the agreement required. Do not commission cosmetic repairs without checking whether the provider specifies an approved repairer; a poor repair can still be charged.

Collection and continuing payments
The customer must arrange collection. Payments continue until the vehicle is returned, so an unattended car or a missed collection appointment does not necessarily end the agreement. Confirm the collection date, location, keys, documents, charging cables and accessories required by the handover instructions.
How should you compare two IONIQ 3 offers?
Compare the complete contract rather than the headline monthly figure. Use the following checklist for every written quote.

What is known about IONIQ 3 specifications?
Technical data and driving range remain subject to final homologation and may vary by trim. Treat preliminary range, equipment and efficiency claims as provisional until Hyundai publishes the final specification for the vehicle you are ordering. A change in trim or battery specification can alter the finance calculation, insurance group, standard equipment and residual-value assumptions used by the provider.

A practical handover checklist
- Keep a copy of the signed agreement, payment schedule and mileage clause.
- Confirm the exact odometer allowance and the excess-mile rate before the first payment.
- Ask in writing whether maintenance, tyres, servicing and roadside assistance are included.
- Arrange compliant insurance and check the policy excess before taking delivery.
- Record every service and retain invoices.
- Six or more rentals before the scheduled end, contact Hyundai Contract Hire if your mileage forecast has changed and request a recalculation.
- Several weeks before collection, inspect the car against the BVRLA condition standard, photograph it and repair only through an approved route.
- At collection, record the mileage, keys, cables, accessories and the date the vehicle was accepted.
- Review the final statement for mileage, damage, administration and early-return items, and query any figure that does not match the contract.
Questions to resolve before signing
- Is this definitely PCH, or is it PCP/PML?
- What is the total amount payable, including the initial payment and every scheduled rental?
- What mileage is contracted and what is the exact excess-mile rate?
- Can the mileage be changed, and what notice is required?
- Who provides insurance, and what excess and eligibility conditions apply?
- Which maintenance and repair items are included?
- What is the early-termination calculation?
- How will collection and independent inspection be arranged?
- Which damage standard applies, and how can an inspection decision be challenged?
- Are the quoted price, APR and vehicle specification tied to a promotional order or registration date?
Once those answers are written into the quote or agreement, you can compare the IONIQ 3 on its actual total commitment rather than on an isolated monthly payment.
