Choose the Dacia Spring if the lowest local purchase price and a generous, clearly stated boot are your priorities. That is a useful starting point, not a universal verdict. The two cars are sold in different countries, trims and model years, and the prices and equipment in this comparison are not a same-market head-to-head.
The Inster is offered with 42 kWh and 49 kWh batteries, with Hyundai quoting up to 370 km WLTP for the 49 kWh version. Dacia’s 2026 Spring announcement specifies a 24.3 kWh LFP battery, 70 hp and 100 hp versions, and 225 km WLTP combined on versions with 15-inch wheels. Actual range depends on weather, speed, load and accessories, so use these figures to compare the cars on paper and then check the exact local specification.

At a glance: what separates the Inster and Spring
Both cars target buyers who want a small, relatively affordable electric vehicle, but they make different compromises. Hyundai puts more emphasis on battery capacity, quoted WLTP distance and rapid charging. Dacia keeps the Spring’s battery and hardware simpler, supports a low entry price in the cited European markets, and publishes useful cargo figures.
| Item | Hyundai Inster | Dacia Spring |
|---|---|---|
| Battery choices | 42 kWh or 49 kWh | 24.3 kWh LFP in the 2026 announcement |
| Quoted maximum range | Up to 370 km WLTP with 49 kWh | 225 km WLTP combined with 15-inch wheels in the global 2026 announcement; UK Journey page quotes up to 155 miles WLTP |
| DC charging | About 30 minutes from 10% to 80% at a station rated at least 120 kW | Optional 40 kW system in some countries and trims; 20% to 80% in 29 minutes |
| AC charging | No exact published figure is stated in Hyundai’s cited specifications | 7 kW AC is standard; Dacia quotes 20% to 100% in 3 hours 20 minutes on a wallbox |
| Power versions | No exact output by trim is stated in Hyundai’s cited specifications | 70 hp and 100 hp versions in the 2026 global announcement |
| Boot space | No directly comparable published figure is stated | 308 litres, or 1,004 litres with rear seats folded, in global material; up to 337 litres for UK Journey |
| Seats | Hyundai describes four seats and fold-flat seating; a French page lists four- and five-seat configurations | Confirm the local version and seating specification before ordering |
| Example price | UK MY26 42 kWh 01: £22,995 on the road, guide effective 1 October 2026 | €16,900 recommended starting price in Dacia Germany’s 23 December 2025 announcement; the global announcement gives the same starting figure |
Those numbers are not all measured under identical conditions. In particular, the Spring’s 20–80% DC time and the Inster’s 10–80% time describe different charge windows, while the prices come from different markets and currencies.

Range: the Inster has the higher published ceiling
Hyundai Inster’s 42 kWh and 49 kWh choices
Hyundai offers the Inster with two battery capacities. The headline figure is up to 370 km WLTP for the 49 kWh version. WLTP is a standardized laboratory test intended to make cars comparable; it is not a promise that the car will travel 370 km on every trip. Motorway speed, cold temperatures, heating, strong headwinds, passengers and luggage can all reduce the distance available.
The 42 kWh model may be sufficient for a city commute and regular local driving, while the 49 kWh car gives more margin between charges. No single WLTP maximum for the 42 kWh version is stated in Hyundai’s published specifications, so do not substitute the 49 kWh figure when comparing a lower-battery trim.
Dacia Spring’s smaller battery and market-specific figures
Dacia’s model-year 2026 global announcement specifies a 24.3 kWh LFP battery. On versions with 15-inch wheels it quotes 225 km WLTP combined. Dacia’s UK page separately quotes up to 155 miles WLTP for the Journey version. Keep the market, trim and wheel size attached to each number: they are not interchangeable claims for every Spring sold worldwide.

The smaller battery can work well when most journeys are short and charging is available at home or at work. It leaves less reserve for an unplanned motorway detour, a cold-weather trip or several days without access to a charger. No independent real-world or winter range test for matching current versions is available in the cited sources, so neither car can be declared the real-world range winner from WLTP data alone.

How to translate the figures into your routine
- Write down your longest normal weekly journey, including the return distance and a realistic diversion.
- Check whether you can charge at home, at work, or only at public stations.
- Allow a buffer for winter, high-speed roads and a fully loaded car rather than planning to arrive at zero.
- Compare the exact battery and wheel configuration on the dealer’s quotation, not just the model name.
If your regular driving is urban and your annual mileage is modest, the Spring’s quoted range may cover your needs at a lower entry price. If you frequently leave town or want fewer charging stops, the Inster’s 49 kWh version is the stronger paper choice.
Charging: the Inster is quicker on a suitable DC charger
Inster DC charging
Hyundai says the Inster can charge from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes when connected to a DC station rated at least 120 kW. The station’s advertised power is a ceiling for the equipment, not a guarantee that the car will draw 120 kW throughout the session. The battery’s state of charge, temperature and the station’s sharing or power limits affect the result.
The quoted window starts at 10% and ends at 80%, so it should not be compared directly with a time measured from 20% to 80%. Charging slows as a battery fills, which is why drivers normally use a rapid charger for a useful partial top-up rather than waiting for 100% during a long trip.

Dacia says 7 kW AC charging is standard on the Spring. Its 40 kW DC charger is optional depending on country and trim. Dacia states 20% to 80% in 29 minutes for the DC system and 20% to 100% in 3 hours 20 minutes on a wallbox. Those are the manufacturer’s stated windows and conditions; confirm that the car you are ordering includes the DC option.

A Spring without the optional DC hardware is a different proposition for road trips from one equipped with it. A buyer who mostly charges overnight may value the standard AC capability more than rapid charging. A buyer who regularly drives between cities should check both the option price and the availability of compatible public chargers along usual routes.
Home charging checklist
- Confirm whether the quoted car includes the cable you need and which connector is fitted in your market.
- Check the electrical capacity and parking arrangement at your home before ordering a wallbox.
- Ask whether installation, inspection or electrical upgrades are included in any wallbox quotation.
- Compare the car’s standard AC equipment with the charging power your home supply can actually deliver.
Price: compare local, like-for-like offers
What the cited prices actually show
Dacia’s global model-year 2026 announcement gives a €16,900 starting price, and Dacia Germany states the same recommended starting price in an announcement dated 23 December 2025. That is a Germany-specific manufacturer price in the German announcement and should not be treated as a guaranteed price in every country.
Hyundai UK’s pricing guide, effective 1 October 2026, lists £22,995 on the road for the MY26 42 kWh 01 trim. The guide distinguishes MY26 stock from MY27 pricing and warns that features and options can vary. It directs buyers to check local retailer availability.

A fair quotation method
- Choose the same purchase method for both cars: cash, finance or lease.
- Match battery, seating, wheel and charging specifications as closely as the local ranges allow.
- Include delivery, registration, mandatory options and any battery-related charge in the displayed total.
- Apply only incentives for which you meet the local eligibility rules.
- Ask the dealer to state the model year and whether the quoted car is existing stock or a future build.
Hyundai France describes eligibility for a French 2026 social leasing scheme with income and work-use conditions. That incentive is specific to France and cannot be generalized to buyers elsewhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Practicality: Spring has published boot figures; Inster offers seating flexibility
Spring cargo capacity
Dacia’s global material lists 308 litres of boot volume and 1,004 litres with the rear seats folded. The Dacia UK page gives up to 337 litres for the Journey version. The difference reflects market and version context, not a contradiction that can be resolved by choosing one universal number.
Check whether the figure on your local specification sheet applies to the exact trim, wheel and seating arrangement you are considering. Take the items you carry most often—a pushchair, work cases, shopping crates or a pet carrier—to a dealer and test them in the actual boot.
Inster seating arrangements
Hyundai describes the Inster as a four-seat car with fold-flat seating, while Hyundai’s France page says four- and five-seat configurations are available. Availability depends on country and configuration. A four-seat layout may be useful when rear passengers need more space or when you regularly fold one side for cargo, but it is not equivalent to a five-seat registration and should be checked before purchase.

No directly comparable Inster boot measurement is stated in Hyundai’s cited specifications. Do not infer that its luggage space is larger or smaller than the Spring’s from exterior appearance alone.
Questions to ask about everyday use
- Is the car registered for four or five occupants?
- Can the rear seats fold individually, and do they fold flat enough for your equipment?
- Will a child seat, adult passenger and your usual luggage fit together?
- Does the quoted boot measurement include a particular floor position or removable shelf?
Performance, comfort and safety: what is—and is not—established
Dacia’s 2026 announcement identifies 70 hp and 100 hp Spring versions. Hyundai’s cited specifications do not provide matching output, acceleration or top-speed data for every Inster battery and trim, so a definitive performance ranking would overstate the evidence.
The cited sources do not provide independent crash-test results, measured motorway range, winter range, ride comfort or motorway performance for both exact current versions. WLTP figures are useful for a common reference, but they do not answer how either car feels on a rough road, how stable it is in crosswinds or how quickly the cabin heats in freezing weather.

Which car suits which buyer?
Choose the Hyundai Inster when…
- You want the highest published WLTP range available in this comparison and can choose the 49 kWh version.
- Frequent longer trips make a rapid DC charging capability important.
- You value the possibility of a four- or five-seat configuration, subject to local availability.
- You are willing to pay a higher local price for more battery capacity and charging capability.
Choose the Dacia Spring when…
- Your main requirement is a low local purchase price and the available €16,900 example is relevant to your market and trim.
- Most journeys are short enough for the 24.3 kWh battery’s quoted range.
- You need the published 308-litre boot, 1,004-litre folded-seat capacity or the UK Journey’s quoted 337 litres, subject to the local version.
- Standard 7 kW AC charging meets your routine, or the optional 40 kW DC system is available and worth selecting.
Look at both more closely when…
- You can charge only from public stations and need to know the real local cost and availability.
- Your household regularly carries four or five people, because seating configurations differ by market.
- You are comparing a discounted Spring with a full-price Inster, or vice versa; list every incentive and fee before deciding.
A buyer’s decision process
- Define the duty cycle. Separate daily commuting from occasional long journeys. Note the distance, speed and number of passengers for each.
- Set a minimum usable range. Use your longest routine journey plus a buffer instead of selecting solely by the headline WLTP number.
- Verify charging access. Price home installation, identify overnight parking and map reliable public chargers for trips that exceed your normal range.
- Match the specification. Confirm battery size, wheel size, seating count, DC option, included cable and model year on the written offer.
- Check practicality in person. Load your normal luggage and test rear-seat access, child-seat fit and driving position.
- Compare total cost in one currency. Include taxes, registration, delivery, finance charges, insurance estimates and incentives that you genuinely qualify for.
- Test-drive both. Drive the same route and record visibility, controls, noise, ride and confidence at the speeds you use.
- Recheck availability. Hyundai’s UK guide notes that stock and equipment can change, so confirm the exact vehicle can still be ordered on the quoted terms.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating WLTP as a guaranteed trip distance. It is a comparison cycle, not a promise for winter or motorway driving.
- Comparing unlike charging times. Inster’s 10–80% figure and Spring’s 20–80% figure start at different battery levels.
- Assuming every Spring has DC charging. The 40 kW system is optional in some countries and trims.
- Mixing market figures. The €16,900 German price, £22,995 UK Inster price, 225 km global Spring figure and 155-mile UK Journey figure each carry their own market and version context.
- Using one boot number for every Spring. Dacia publishes 308 litres globally and up to 337 litres for UK Journey.
- Assuming the seating layout. Inster four- and five-seat availability varies by country; verify the registration specification.
- Expecting a paper comparison to answer ride or safety questions. Arrange a test drive and consult current independent safety information for the exact versions available in your market.
Final verdict
The Hyundai Inster is the stronger on-paper all-rounder for buyers who travel farther, want the larger 49 kWh battery option or value quicker DC charging at a suitable station. Its quoted 370 km WLTP maximum gives it a clear range advantage over the Spring figures cited here, although real trips will vary.
The Dacia Spring remains compelling when the local price is the deciding factor, daily journeys are short and its cargo capacity fits your needs. Its standard 7 kW AC charging is adequate for many overnight routines, while the optional 40 kW DC system must be checked on the specific trim.
Make the final choice from two written, same-market quotations. Confirm the battery, seats, wheels, charging equipment, boot configuration, model year and incentives before treating either car as the better deal.
