There is no universal winner between a used Hyundai Grand i10 (including the Grand i10 Nios) and a Maruti Suzuki Swift. Buy the individual car with the better condition, service history, correct variant for your needs, and a price that still leaves room for immediate repairs. A newer or better-equipped example can matter more than the badge.
Your shortlist must be model-year and trim specific. A 2014–2018 Grand i10 versus Swift comparison is not interchangeable with a 2019 Nios comparison or with specifications for the current models. Verify the engine, fuel type, transmission, safety equipment, child-seat anchors, and installed features on the exact registration and vehicle identification number (VIN).

What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
The Grand i10 and Swift have been sold in India across several generations, engines, fuels and trim levels. The available evidence supports a careful framework rather than a model-wide ranking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Evidence | What it describes | How to use it when shopping used |
|---|---|---|
| Hyundai current specifications | A displayed Grand i10 Nios petrol+CNG configuration | Use as a current reference only; do not apply its figures to every older Grand i10 or to petrol-only cars. |
| Maruti current specifications | The current Swift range with manual, AGS and CNG claims | Useful for understanding the latest model, not proof of equipment or economy on an older used Swift. |
| Autocar comparison | Selected current Nios Asta AMT and Swift ZXI+ AMT versions | Its power, cylinder and test-mileage figures belong to those two test cars. |
| CarWale historical comparison | Grand i10 Era 1.2 Kappa VTVT versus 2014–2018 Swift LXi (O), both manuals | Its mileage figures are historical page-listed values, not a current market guarantee. |
| CarDekho, August 26, 2019 | Then-current Nios and Swift petrol variants, with period equipment and prices | Use only when the car you are viewing matches the compared year and trim. |
Current specifications are especially easy to misuse. A brochure number can describe a new-generation car while your candidate is ten years old, has a different engine or has lost factory equipment during repairs. Treat every general claim as a prompt to inspect the listing, not as a substitute for doing so.

Dimensions and everyday packaging
Hyundai’s current Grand i10 Nios specification lists 3,815 mm length, 1,680 mm width, 1,520 mm height and a 2,450 mm wheelbase. Maruti’s current Swift lists 3,860 mm length, 1,735 mm width, 1,520 mm height and the same 2,450 mm wheelbase.
| Current-model measurement | Grand i10 Nios | Swift |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 3,815 mm | 3,860 mm |
| Width | 1,680 mm | 1,735 mm |
| Height | 1,520 mm | 1,520 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,450 mm | 2,450 mm |
The Swift is therefore 45 mm longer and 55 mm wider in the current specification, while the wheelbase and height match. Those are small differences on paper; seat adjustment, tyre condition, parking space, visibility and the actual generation can matter more in daily use. Do not transfer these dimensions to an older Grand i10 or Swift without checking that generation’s specification.
Engines, fuel types and transmissions
Grand i10 and Grand i10 Nios
Hyundai’s current page displays a petrol+CNG configuration with a 1,197 cc engine, 50.5 kW (69 PS) and 95.2 Nm on CNG, paired with a five-speed manual. The page identifies that as a CNG-specific configuration and warns that specifications and equipment may change. It is not a complete description of every current Nios powertrain and does not describe every used Grand i10.

For historical context, a CarDekho comparison published on August 26, 2019 described selected Nios petrol versions with a 1.2-litre engine producing 83 PS and 113 Nm, with manual and AMT choices. It also included period diesel information. Those numbers identify the 2019-era comparison cars; they should not be used to identify an arbitrary listing today.
Maruti Suzuki Swift
The current Swift page lists a five-speed manual and AGS (automated manual) transmission. Its manufacturer-stated economy claims are 24.80 km/l for petrol manual, 25.75 km/l for petrol AMT and 32.85 km/kg for CNG. These are current-model claims, and the CNG figure uses kg rather than litres, so it is not directly interchangeable with a petrol km/l number.

Confirm the fuel type on the registration certificate, inspect the fuel-system hardware and ask for installation or servicing records where applicable.
What the selected AMT test reveals
Autocar’s comparison used a Grand i10 Nios Asta AMT and a Swift ZXI+ AMT. The Nios is listed with a 1,197 cc four-cylinder engine making 83 hp and 113.8 Nm; the Swift is listed with a 1,197 cc three-cylinder engine making 81.58 hp and 111.7 Nm. The same comparison reports tested overall mileage of 15.19 km/l for the Nios and 15.9 km/l for the Swift.

Fuel economy: how to read the numbers
Economy claims answer different questions from a used-car buyer’s running-cost calculation.
- Manufacturer claim: the current Swift page’s 24.80 km/l, 25.75 km/l and 32.85 km/kg figures are stated for current configurations under the maker’s test regime.
- Publisher test: Autocar’s 15.19 km/l Nios and 15.9 km/l Swift figures are measured on its selected AMTs.
- Historical page figure: CarWale lists 19.77 km/l for the compared Grand i10 and 20.4 km/l for the compared 2014–2018 Swift. These are page-listed historical comparison figures, not a contemporary independent test or a guarantee.
- Your result: traffic, speed, tyre pressure, air-conditioning use, load, fuel quality, maintenance and driving style can change the outcome.
For a realistic estimate, record odometer and fuel quantities over several full tanks in the route you actually drive. Keep petrol km/l and CNG km/kg separate, then multiply your measured fuel consumption by the local pump price. A car that looks better on a brochure may not be cheaper for a short, congested commute if its condition is poor or if CNG is inconvenient on your route.

Equipment and safety: verify the exact trim
Features recorded on period comparisons
The 2019 comparison identified conveniences such as rear air-conditioning vents, a reversing camera and a touchscreen on particular Nios versions. It identified ISOFIX child-seat mounts on particular Swift versions. These are trim-specific observations, not equipment guarantees for every Nios or Swift.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When viewing a listing, operate every feature and look for evidence that it is factory-fitted rather than an aftermarket replacement. Check that the camera image is clear, the touchscreen boots, steering controls work, rear vents deliver air and the ISOFIX labels and anchor points are physically present. A seller’s description copied from a higher trim is not proof.
Current Swift safety equipment is not an older-car rating
Maruti’s current Swift page displays six airbags, ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, electronic stability program and hill-hold assist. Those current-model features cannot be assigned to an older used Swift without checking its year and variant. The available evidence does not provide a matched, model-year-specific crash-test comparison for the used Grand i10 and Swift generations.
Do not infer crashworthiness from airbag count, brand reputation or a rating from another market or model year. Confirm the exact restraint equipment, inspect the airbag warning lamp during the ignition self-check and investigate any prior deployment or dashboard replacement.
Which one fits your use?
| Your priority | What to favour in the listings | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest purchase risk | The better-documented, independently inspected car, regardless of badge | Condition and records can outweigh specification differences. |
| Current-model claimed economy | A current Swift configuration that matches your fuel and transmission needs | The maker publishes separate petrol-manual, petrol-AGS and CNG claims; verify that the used car is the same type. |
| Features for rear passengers | A Nios trim that demonstrably has rear AC vents and the equipment you need | The 2019 comparison lists these only on particular versions. |
| Child-seat installation | A car with confirmed ISOFIX anchors and compatible seat position | The cited Swift equipment was trim-specific; check the physical anchors. |
| Manual simplicity | Either model with a healthy manual gearbox and complete service records | There is no evidence here that one nameplate is universally cheaper or more reliable to maintain. |
| AMT convenience | The individual AMT that passes a cold-start and traffic test | Clutch take-up, creep and warning lights vary by car and maintenance history. |
This framework deliberately avoids declaring one badge the better used car. A clean, documented Grand i10 with the right features is a stronger purchase than a neglected Swift, and the reverse is equally true.

How to compare two actual listings
- Write down the identity: record registration year, manufacturing year if available, generation, variant name, fuel, transmission, odometer reading and VIN for both cars.
- Match the specification: use the manufacturer’s period brochure or an authorised dealer’s record to verify engine output, safety equipment, wheel and tyre size, airbags, ABS/ESP, camera, infotainment and ISOFIX. Do not rely on a generic current webpage.
- Request documentation: ask for registration and insurance history, service invoices, inspection reports, emissions certificates where applicable, spare-key status and any finance or ownership paperwork.
- Check accident and repair evidence: inspect panel gaps, paint texture, welds, underbody damage, windscreen dates, airbag covers and seat-belt pretensioners. A history check can support—not replace—a physical inspection.
- Inspect the mechanical condition cold: arrange to see the car before it has been warmed. Watch for warning lamps, smoke, uneven idle, fluid leaks, unusual belt or bearing noise and a cooling fan that behaves abnormally.
- Test every control: operate windows, locks, lights, horn, wipers, air-conditioning, rear vents, audio, camera, charging ports and seat adjustments. Confirm that the airbag and ABS lamps illuminate for the self-check and then go out normally.
- Drive a representative route: include stop-start traffic, a slope, a rough patch and an open road. Check steering pull, braking, clutch bite, gearbox engagement, AMT shifts, suspension noises, tyre vibration and temperature stability.
- Obtain an independent pre-purchase inspection: have a qualified technician scan control modules and assess engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, tyres, fluids, underbody and structural repairs. Neither model’s general reputation can replace this step.
- Price the car after catch-up work: compare similar year, variant, fuel, transmission and mileage listings in your local market. Subtract the cost of tyres, battery, fluids, scheduled service, missing keys or damaged trim from the amount you are prepared to pay.
- Check relevant recalls or service campaigns: ask an authorised service outlet to verify the VIN and record completed work. The available comparison does not establish a model-wide recall advantage.
Common mistakes that produce a bad choice
Comparing a current brochure with an old listing
Current dimensions, Swift safety equipment and current economy claims describe today’s model. They do not upgrade a 2014–2018 car. Ask for the exact year-and-variant specification.
Treating claimed economy as an ownership guarantee
The 2014–2018 page figures, the 2019-era claims and the current Swift figures come from different contexts. Use a measured fuel log from your route when running costs decide the purchase.
Assuming trim equipment
Rear AC vents, a camera, touchscreen and ISOFIX are not universal across the ranges. Inspect the actual car and test the equipment.
Ignoring condition because the asking price looks attractive
A low price can disappear into tyres, clutch or AMT work, suspension, air-conditioning repairs, accident rectification and overdue servicing. Get estimates before negotiating.
Using airbag count as a crash-safety ranking
Airbags and electronic aids are valuable equipment, but they do not establish a matched crash-test result for different used generations. Verify year-specific evidence and the condition of the restraint system.

A practical decision rule
Choose the Grand i10 when the available car has the condition, records, seating and confirmed equipment that fit your use better than the Swift alternative. A Nios trim with working rear AC vents, camera or touchscreen may be preferable if those features matter and the car passes inspection.
Choose the Swift when the specific car offers the fuel type, transmission, equipment and measured economy you need, especially if you are comparing a current-generation specification with a similar-condition alternative. Do not assume that a current Swift’s six airbags, stability program or claimed economy exist on an older example.
If the two cars are otherwise close, let documented service history, structural condition, tyre and brake life, completed VIN campaigns, inspection findings and the all-in local price decide. The nameplate is the tie-breaker only after the individual cars have been matched.
Bottom line for a used-car buyer
There is no evidence-based, all-years verdict that the Hyundai Grand i10 is always better than the Maruti Suzuki Swift, or vice versa. Compare the exact year and variant, then buy the cleaner and better-supported car. Use the published dimensions, power and economy figures to understand what you are looking at; use inspection, records and a local price comparison to decide whether that particular car is worth owning.
