On a supported Hyundai electric vehicle, open Home > Electric Vehicle > settings/gear > Battery Conditioning, then choose Activate or Active. For the vehicle to manage conditioning automatically, enter a DC fast-charging station as a destination or waypoint in Hyundai’s built-in navigation. The system then adjusts battery temperature for the expected arrival and DC-charging performance.
What Hyundai battery preconditioning does
Battery preconditioning changes the high-voltage battery’s temperature before a charging session so the pack is closer to the range in which DC fast charging works as expected. Hyundai describes the feature as useful in very cold climates and when preparing for Level 3 charging. The same function can also address a battery that is too hot.

Temperature matters because a battery that is outside its suitable charging range may accept power more slowly. Preconditioning does not add energy to the pack and it is not a general-purpose range mode. It spends energy to heat or otherwise adjust battery temperature, and that energy can reduce the distance available for driving.
Hyundai’s manuals describe the navigation-linked function as controlling battery temperature for DC charging while considering the estimated arrival time. In other words, the car is not simply running a heater for a fixed, universal number of minutes. It uses the route and expected arrival at the charger to decide how to prepare the battery.

How to turn on Battery Conditioning
Manual activation from the infotainment screen
- Turn the vehicle on and wait for the infotainment system to display the Home screen.
- Select Electric Vehicle.
- Open the settings or gear menu.
- Select Battery Conditioning.
- Choose Activate or Active, depending on the vehicle’s model year and market.
The wording is not identical on every Hyundai EV. “Activate” and “Active” are both used in Hyundai materials, so a different label does not necessarily indicate a different function. If Battery Conditioning is absent, check the owner’s manual for the exact vehicle rather than assuming that another Hyundai model’s menu path applies.
Navigation-linked automatic operation
- Open Hyundai’s built-in navigation.
- Search for the intended DC fast-charging station.
- Set that station as the route destination or add it as a waypoint.
- Drive the route with enough time remaining for the vehicle to prepare the battery before arrival.
Hyundai’s owner-manual instructions specifically tie automatic operation to selecting a DC charging station in the car’s native navigation. Entering a charger only in a phone app or another navigation system does not provide the vehicle with the route and estimated-arrival information described by Hyundai.
When the vehicle determines that conditioning is needed, it manages battery temperature on the way to the selected charger. The system may do nothing if the battery is already at a suitable temperature, because additional heating or cooling would provide no charging benefit.

Manual activation versus navigation-linked conditioning

Neither option is intended to be enabled solely to improve ordinary AC charging. Hyundai’s cited instructions focus Battery Conditioning on DC charging performance.

When you should use preconditioning
Before a DC fast-charge stop in very cold weather
Cold-soaked batteries can charge more slowly than they would at a suitable temperature. If a long trip includes a DC fast charger, enter that charger in the built-in navigation and leave enough driving time for the vehicle to prepare the pack. Hyundai USA describes Battery Conditioning Mode as a way to optimize battery temperature in very cold climates or when preparing for Level 3 charging.
There is no universal Hyundai preconditioning duration or temperature threshold that applies to every model, market, software version, and battery configuration. The car’s own decision and status messages take priority over a timetable copied from another model.
Before a DC fast-charge stop when the battery is too hot
Battery Conditioning can also adjust a battery that is too hot for the expected charging conditions. The same navigation procedure applies: select the DC station as a destination or waypoint so the vehicle can account for the route and arrival time.

When you are only using AC charging
Level 1 and Level 2 charging are ordinary AC charging methods. Hyundai’s manuals and USA guidance describe this feature primarily in relation to DC fast charging, so enabling it solely for an AC session is not an efficient use of the energy it consumes. Follow the charging guidance for your specific model if a manual gives a separate AC-related instruction.
Requirements that determine whether it will run
The vehicle must have the required battery-heating equipment
Hyundai states that Battery Conditioning operates only on a vehicle equipped with a battery heater. Two EVs with similar names can therefore have different capabilities if their equipment, market specification, or model year differs. A missing menu or an unavailable function can be an equipment difference rather than a software fault.
State of charge cannot be too low
Conditioning uses energy. Hyundai’s owner information says the function may not operate when state of charge is low because preserving driving distance takes priority. If the pack is near the vehicle’s low-charge protection point, the car can decline to spend energy on temperature adjustment even when a DC stop is selected.
The battery must actually need temperature adjustment
If battery temperature is already suitable for the planned charging conditions, the system may indicate that conditioning is unnecessary and perform no additional work. A lack of audible heating activity is not, by itself, evidence of a malfunction.

Model, market, software, and equipment differences apply
Menu labels, supported models, and availability vary by model year, region, software, and installed equipment. Use the manual for the exact vehicle when its screen does not match the steps above. Do not generalize a threshold, preconditioning time, or feature availability from one IONIQ 5, KONA Electric, or other Hyundai EV to another without checking its documentation.
What preconditioning costs in energy and range
Heating or otherwise adjusting the battery requires energy and takes time before the target temperature is reached. Hyundai warns that the energy used to adjust battery temperature may shorten driving distance. The amount is not a universal published figure: it depends on the starting temperature, ambient conditions, route, vehicle equipment, and the battery’s state of charge.
- Plan the route with enough charge to reach the selected station even if conditioning consumes some energy.
- Use the feature when the likely DC-charging benefit justifies that energy use.
- Do not expect a fixed range penalty that applies to every trip.
- Do not keep conditioning enabled as a default range strategy when no DC fast-charge stop is planned.
Because Hyundai does not provide one universal preconditioning time, temperature threshold, or range-loss number for all supported EVs, the vehicle’s status display and model-specific manual are the appropriate references for a particular trip.

- Identify the charger type. If the stop is a DC fast charger (also called Level 3), preconditioning may improve the chance of expected charging performance when the battery is too cold or hot. If it is only AC Level 1 or Level 2, Hyundai’s cited guidance does not make Battery Conditioning a routine requirement.
- Check the vehicle’s equipment and menu. Confirm that the EV has a battery heater and that Battery Conditioning appears under Home > Electric Vehicle > settings/gear.
- Enter the charger in native navigation. Set the DC station as the destination or a waypoint so the vehicle can use the route and estimated arrival time.
- Assess available charge. If state of charge is low, the vehicle may prioritize preserving range and decline to condition.
- Allow route time. Start the trip early enough for the car to adjust temperature before arrival; there is no single time value that is valid for every Hyundai EV.
- Read the vehicle’s status. If it says the battery is already suitable, additional conditioning is not required. If it is unavailable, use the troubleshooting checks below and consult the exact owner manual.
Why Battery Conditioning may be unavailable or appear not to work
The menu is missing
- Check whether the vehicle is equipped with a battery heater, which Hyundai lists as a requirement.
- Verify the exact model year and market manual; another Hyundai EV may use different equipment or software.
- Look under Electric Vehicle and its settings/gear menu rather than assuming the feature is in the general vehicle settings.
The option is present but does not activate
- The battery may already be within the suitable temperature range.
- State of charge may be too low, causing the vehicle to preserve driving distance instead.
- The selected route may not contain a DC station entered as a destination or waypoint in Hyundai’s built-in navigation.
- The vehicle may not have the battery-heater equipment required for the function, even if a related menu is visible on another model.
Charging is still slower than expected
Preconditioning prepares the battery; it does not guarantee a particular charging speed. Charging performance also depends on the station and the vehicle’s charging system. If the car reports that the battery is suitable, the remaining limitation is not necessarily a preconditioning failure. Check the exact vehicle manual and the charger’s operating status before treating the behavior as a fault.

You selected the charger in a phone app
Hyundai’s documented automatic method uses the car’s built-in navigation. Re-enter the DC station in that navigation and set it as the destination or a waypoint. A third-party route display does not provide the vehicle with the documented arrival-time input.
Examples of the right and wrong use cases
Long winter trip with one DC stop
Choose the DC station in Hyundai navigation before departure. If the battery is cold and the vehicle has a battery heater with sufficient state of charge, Battery Conditioning can prepare the pack during the route. Watch the vehicle’s status rather than assuming that a fixed number of minutes is required.
Short local drive followed by AC charging at home
There is no DC fast-charge stop to prepare for, so routine Battery Conditioning is not indicated by Hyundai’s cited guidance. Charging on an AC home supply does not create the same documented use case.

Low-charge trip to a DC station
Enter the station in the built-in navigation, but recognize that low state of charge can cause the vehicle to prioritize remaining driving distance and skip conditioning. Preserve enough charge to reach the station rather than relying on the feature to run.
Warm-weather arrival at a DC station
If the battery is too hot, the vehicle may adjust its temperature on the route. If it is already suitable, it may report that no conditioning is needed. Both outcomes are consistent with Hyundai’s operating rules.
What Hyundai does and does not promise
Hyundai’s official material establishes the operating purpose and prerequisites, but it does not provide one universal numeric preconditioning time, temperature threshold, or range-loss figure for all EVs. Those values should not be borrowed from a different model or market.
