Hyundai’s Boulder is an off-road-styled SUV concept, not a production truck. It previews the design direction for Hyundai’s planned first U.S. body-on-frame vehicle: a midsize pickup intended to enter a segment dominated by established rivals. The concept makes an ambitious statement, but it does not yet establish how the eventual truck will perform or compete.
What is the Hyundai Boulder Concept?
The Boulder is an SUV-shaped design study for a future Hyundai midsize pickup. Hyundai says the pickup will be its first U.S. body-on-frame vehicle, and that the concept explores the look and rugged character of that planned truck. The Boulder itself is not available for sale.
Hyundai describes the design as an upright, two-box shape built around its “Art of Steel” design language. Its U.S. concept page lists a body-on-frame structure, 37-inch mud-terrain tires, aggressive approach, departure and breakover angles, safari windows, and a double-hinged tailgate that opens from either side. Those are details of the concept, not confirmed specifications or equipment for the production pickup. Hyundai’s Boulder concept page
How does Boulder preview Hyundai’s future pickup?
Hyundai says the planned production vehicles will be designed, developed and built in America, using Hyundai-produced U.S. steel. The company’s North American chief, Randy Parker, called the project a growth opportunity: “Developing a robust midsize pickup is a significant growth opportunity for Hyundai in the United States.” Hyundai’s announcement

The concept offers a visual preview, but Hyundai has not provided the production truck’s final dimensions, powertrain, towing or payload ratings, pricing, or sales forecast in the cited materials. The concept’s tires and off-road design cues therefore cannot be taken as evidence of the production model’s capability.
When is Hyundai’s midsize truck expected?
Hyundai’s timing statements differ: its U.S. Boulder page says the midsize truck is due in 2029, while the company’s press release says the production pickup is due by 2030. Both are targets rather than a firm on-sale date. The safest reading is that Hyundai is aiming for the end of the decade, with the precise timing still unclear. U.S. concept page · Press release

Does Boulder really challenge Detroit?
“Challenges Detroit” is a competitive headline frame, not a proven result. A New Atlas article compares the concept’s rugged styling with the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler, but that comparison does not demonstrate production performance parity, direct rivalry, or future market-share gains. New Atlas’s Boulder coverage
A meaningful comparison will have to wait for production information and should use like-for-like data: price, powertrain, off-road equipment, capability ratings, towing and payload, availability, and warranty. Comparing the Boulder’s concept styling promises with measured specifications from vehicles already on sale would mix different kinds of evidence.

What prospective truck buyers can conclude now
- Hyundai has put a distinctive off-road-oriented design study on the table and says it previews a planned midsize body-on-frame pickup.
- The 37-inch tires, tailgate arrangement, safari windows and other Boulder features are concept details, not a confirmed production equipment list.
- Hyundai’s stated U.S. design, development and manufacturing intent is clear, but the truck’s technical specifications and market impact are not yet established.
- The company gives two different timing targets—2029 on its U.S. concept page and by 2030 in its press release—so shoppers should not treat either as a confirmed launch date.
