The all-new Hyundai Bayon could be the better fit if its larger published dimensions, projected 440-litre boot and new-generation equipment match your priorities, but Hyundai has not yet published final homologated technical data, range or a confirmed price.
This is therefore a timing-sensitive comparison rather than a permanent verdict. Toyota has disclosed UK ordering, prices and delivery timing for the refreshed Yaris Cross. Hyundai is presenting the new Bayon in October 2026 and says combustion versions come first, with a hybrid planned for 2027. Check your country’s configurators and dealers before treating any specification, trim or delivery date as applicable to you.

What is actually being compared?
These are not simply two unchanged cars from the same model year. Hyundai is introducing an all-new Bayon in October 2026, while Toyota has announced a refresh of the Yaris Cross. Outgoing Bayon figures, old dealer stock and current Yaris Cross specifications can easily be mixed with the new versions, producing a misleading comparison.
Hyundai’s UK material identifies the new Bayon as a combustion-first launch. A new hybrid is planned to join in 2027, but Hyundai has not yet confirmed the final local powertrain specification. Toyota’s European information already describes two hybrid outputs, although the exact engine, grade and drivetrain mix varies by market.

Availability comes before a specification contest
Verify that a dealer is offering the all-new Bayon rather than remaining previous-generation inventory. Hyundai places the new model at the Paris Motor Show from 12 to 18 October 2026, but presentation does not automatically mean that orders, production slots or deliveries have opened in every country.
Toyota’s UK launch announcement, dated 26 August 2026, said the refreshed Yaris Cross was available to order with deliveries from September. Toyota also says European timing differs by market, so the UK schedule cannot be assumed elsewhere.
A launch date is not a delivery promise
Ask whether a quoted Bayon is a demonstrator, a dealer allocation or a factory order. A showroom display can precede retail registration by months, especially when final homologation is still pending. Request the written order status, expected build week and the conditions for a price change if certification or production slips. For the Yaris Cross, confirm that “from September” refers to your country and not only the UK announcement.

Dimensions, boot space and interior practicality
On the figures Hyundai has published, the new Bayon is the larger vehicle externally. Its stated dimensions are 4,245 mm long, 1,810 mm wide and 1,570 mm high when fitted with 18-inch wheels and roof rails, with a 2,600 mm wheelbase. Hyundai describes increased rear legroom and projects 440 litres of luggage capacity for combustion versions, with additional storage beneath the luggage-compartment floor.
Compared with Toyota Spain’s listed Yaris Cross dimensions, the Bayon is 73 mm longer and 45 mm wider, while its stated height is 25 mm lower. Those differences can help explain a roomier cabin or wider loading aperture, but they do not prove either advantage. Wheel and tyre packages, seat rails, roof rails and market-specific bumpers can alter the published measurements.
Those Bayon measurements and the 440-litre boot figure are not yet a final homologated comparison. Hyundai’s page explicitly says official technical data and range are pending final homologation. The boot capacity should therefore be treated as a projection until the production specification and measurement method are confirmed.
Toyota Spain lists the Yaris Cross at 4,172 × 1,765 × 1,595 mm and gives a starting price of €27,050 for that market. The Spanish page labels its figures as pending final homologation. Its dimensions show a shorter and narrower body than the published Bayon, but a slightly greater stated height. Exterior size alone does not establish rear-seat comfort or usable cargo volume; check the seat position, load-floor height and opening on the exact car you will buy.

An April 2026 Hyundai Finland comparison illustrates the risk. It paired a selected Bayon Cross 1.0 T-GDi 90 7DCT Comfort Edition with a Yaris Cross Hybrid 116 Active and listed 411 litres versus 397 litres of VDA boot space. Hyundai said those figures and the accompanying prices and equipment were collected from manufacturers’ websites on 10 April 2026. That snapshot concerns an earlier, selected configuration; it is not a current comparison of the all-new Bayon and refreshed Yaris Cross.
Powertrains: hybrid now or combustion first?
Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid 130
Toyota Europe lists Hybrid 130 as the standard powertrain across the refreshed Yaris Cross versions in the UK launch announcement. Its manufacturer figures are 130 DIN hp (96 kW), 185 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 10.7 seconds, combined WLTP consumption of 4.4–5.1 l/100 km and 100–116 g/km of CO₂. These are WLTP claims, not an independent real-world fuel-economy test; wheel size, trim, weather, traffic and driving style affect results.
Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid 115
Toyota Europe says Hybrid 115 remains available on the Mid grade with front-wheel drive. It lists 116 DIN hp, 141 Nm, 4.4–4.7 l/100 km and 100–107 g/km CO₂. Because this offering is grade- and drivetrain-specific, do not assume every market or trim has access to it.

Hyundai Bayon powertrain timing
Hyundai says the all-new Bayon launches initially with combustion engines and that a new hybrid is planned for 2027. Its UK page does not yet provide final official technical data or range. Regional pages show inconsistent “up to” power values, so quoting one figure as the confirmed output of the UK or European car would be premature.
This creates the clearest powertrain decision. If you need a disclosed hybrid now, the Yaris Cross is the more certain option. If you are comfortable buying a combustion Bayon or waiting for the planned 2027 hybrid, the Hyundai remains relevant—but its eventual fuel economy, output, price and delivery timing need confirmation.
Drivetrain and all-weather use
Toyota Europe describes both front-wheel drive and AWD-i versions of the Yaris Cross. In Toyota GB’s UK launch announcement, AWD was limited to the Excel grade. That is a UK example, not a universal European rule; check the drivetrain list for your country and the exact grade.
The available information does not establish an all-wheel-drive version of the all-new Bayon. Do not infer one from the SUV body style or from the presence of roof rails. If winter roads, steep driveways or loose surfaces are part of your routine, ask for the final drivetrain specification, tyre options, ground-clearance data and local traction-control equipment before placing an order.

| GR Sport | £35,095 | Hybrid 130 standard in the UK announcement |
These are UK prices from Toyota’s 26 August 2026 announcement. They include that market’s taxes, equipment and pricing structure and should not be used as a pan-European ranking.
Toyota Spain lists a starting price of €27,050, a 130 CV hybrid and claimed consumption of 4.4–5 l/100 km. The Spanish page labels its figures pending final homologation. A Spanish entry price and UK trim prices cannot be converted into a fair “which car is cheaper” claim because taxes, standard equipment, finance offers and delivery charges differ.
Hyundai’s reviewed new-Bayon material does not supply a confirmed price. Until a local price list appears, any statement that the Bayon is cheaper is an assumption based on older cars or expectations, not an established comparison.

- Write down the exact model year, engine, transmission, drivetrain and grade for each quote.
- Add mandatory registration, delivery, metallic-paint and technology-pack charges.
- Separate the cash price from monthly finance payments; record deposit, term, interest and final balloon payment.
- Apply the same ownership period and annual mileage to both cars when estimating fuel and servicing.
- Check whether the quoted vehicle is demonstrator, pre-registered or factory order stock.
- Confirm the written delivery date and what happens if homologation or production timing changes.
Safety and convenience equipment
The new Bayon page lists driver-assistance and visibility functions, but the exact combination depends on the final local specification and grade. Toyota describes its T-Mate/Safety Sense functions and says parking and blind-spot equipment vary by trim. Model-family marketing is not a substitute for the equipment list attached to your quotation.
Compare the following items line by line:
- Automatic emergency braking and the situations it covers.
- Adaptive cruise control and lane-centering capability.
- Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and exit warning.
- Front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera or a 360-degree view.
- LED headlamps, automatic high beam and windscreen visibility aids.
- Child-seat mounting points, rear-seat reminders and speed-limit recognition.
Ask the dealer to demonstrate the systems in the exact car, including how warnings are adjusted and whether a feature is standard, optional or bundled into a higher grade. A safety feature listed for a model range may not be fitted to the entry version you can afford.
Questions to put to a dealer before signing
Ask for the local specification sheet rather than relying on a global webpage. Confirm the homologated engine output, WLTP consumption and CO₂ figure for the exact wheel size. For the Bayon, ask when the 440-litre capacity, range and hybrid timetable will be certified. For the Yaris Cross, confirm whether the quote is Hybrid 130 or Hybrid 115, and whether AWD-i is actually available on that grade in your market.
Also request the warranty booklet, service intervals, roadside-assistance term, battery coverage where applicable and the price of scheduled maintenance. Insurance groups and tyre costs can differ significantly between entry wheels and larger sport grades. Finally, ask whether a quoted discount depends on finance, part exchange or a short-lived campaign, and obtain the cash price without those assumptions.
Which buyer should choose which SUV?
Choose the Yaris Cross when a hybrid is a current requirement
The Yaris Cross has a disclosed Hybrid 130 range and a continuing Hybrid 115 front-wheel-drive option on the Mid grade in Toyota Europe’s information. That makes it the clearer choice for a buyer who wants a manufacturer-published hybrid specification without waiting for a future Bayon variant.

The Yaris Cross is also the more straightforward choice if you specifically need AWD and your local catalogue offers it on a suitable grade. In the UK announcement, AWD is tied to Excel; other markets can differ.
Give the Bayon priority when published space and a new generation matter most
The Bayon deserves a close look if its 4,245 mm length, 2,600 mm wheelbase, projected 440-litre combustion boot and under-floor storage address your passenger or luggage needs. Hyundai also describes increased rear legroom and new-generation assistance and visibility functions.
Those advantages remain provisional until final homologation. Arrange a physical inspection of rear-seat knee room, the loading aperture and the floor configuration rather than relying on the projected number.
Wait if the decision depends on final Bayon data
Waiting is rational when you need a confirmed Bayon price, fuel economy, power output, official range, delivery date or hybrid availability. Hyundai has not published those final figures in the reviewed UK information. A dealer’s estimate can help with planning, but it is not the same as a final specification sheet.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ownership questions the current evidence cannot settle
Neither the available Bayon nor Yaris Cross information establishes that one car is more reliable, safer in independent testing, cheaper to run in practice or better value over time. Manufacturer WLTP results and sales totals do not answer those questions.
Toyota Europe reports 200,000 Yaris Cross units sold in Europe in 2025 and calls it the region’s best-selling Toyota model. That is a manufacturer-reported sales statistic, not a reliability rating or proof that every owner will have the same experience.
For a real ownership comparison, obtain local insurance quotes, service schedules, warranty terms, tyre sizes and replacement costs. Confirm whether a hybrid battery warranty has mileage or calendar limits and whether roadside assistance is included. These details are country- and contract-specific and should be read in the documents for the vehicle you are ordering.

- Check driving position: set the seat for the primary driver, then sit behind it and measure knee, foot and head room.
- Load your real items: use a child seat, pram, suitcase or work equipment; measure the opening, not just the advertised litres.

- Drive the powertrain you will buy: a Hybrid 130, Hybrid 115, combustion Bayon and any future hybrid are different propositions.

Bottom line for a 2026 purchase
There is no evidence-based universal winner. For a buyer who wants an already announced hybrid lineup and, where offered, AWD-i, the refreshed Toyota Yaris Cross is the more certain purchase today. Its UK launch prices and delivery timing are published, while European data identifies Hybrid 130 and Hybrid 115 outputs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Hyundai Bayon cheaper than the Toyota Yaris Cross?
There is no confirmed like-for-like answer yet. Hyundai has not published a final price for the all-new Bayon. Toyota’s announced UK prices run from £27,445 to £35,095, while Toyota Spain lists €27,050, but taxes, equipment, finance and fees differ by market.
Which SUV has a hybrid powertrain available now?
The Yaris Cross. Toyota lists Hybrid 130 across the refreshed UK range and Hybrid 115 on the Mid front-wheel-drive grade in European information. Hyundai says the new Bayon launches with combustion engines, with a hybrid planned for 2027.
Does the Yaris Cross have all-wheel drive?
Toyota describes front-wheel drive and AWD-i. In the UK launch announcement, AWD was available on Excel. Availability and grade names vary, so verify the local configurator rather than assuming every Yaris Cross can be ordered with AWD.
How big is the new Bayon’s boot?
Hyundai projects 440 litres for combustion versions and mentions storage beneath the luggage floor. That figure remains provisional until final homologation. An older April 2026 Finland comparison listed 411 litres for a selected Bayon and 397 litres for a selected Yaris Cross using VDA measurements.
Which car is larger externally?
Hyundai publishes the new Bayon at 4,245 mm long, 1,810 mm wide and 1,570 mm high with 18-inch wheels and roof rails. Toyota Spain lists the Yaris Cross at 4,172 × 1,765 × 1,595 mm. Equipment and measurement conventions can affect the comparison.
Should I buy an outgoing Bayon discount car or wait?
First establish which generation is being offered. A discounted outgoing car may suit you, but its dimensions, equipment and powertrains are not evidence for the all-new model. Compare the written price, warranty and specification with the expected timing and final data for the 2026 Bayon.
Recommended Free Tools
Are Toyota’s fuel-consumption figures realistic?
The published 4.4–5.1 l/100 km for Hybrid 130 and 4.4–4.7 l/100 km for Hybrid 115 are WLTP manufacturer claims. Traffic, temperature, speed, tyres, wheel size and driving style can produce different real-world results.
Does Toyota’s 200,000-unit sales figure prove reliability?
No. Toyota Europe says 200,000 Yaris Cross units were sold in Europe in 2025. That indicates sales volume, not independent reliability, safety-test performance or the running cost of an individual vehicle.
