Hyundai Bayon vs. Kia Stonic: UK Space, Features and Running Costs Compared

The Hyundai Bayon has the larger published boot with the rear seats upright, while the Kia Stonic offers a stated 1,155-litre folded-seat capacity and a seven-year warranty. Here is how their UK trims, engines and running costs compare—and what still needs a dealer quote.

For a current UK-market comparison, the Hyundai Bayon is the stronger starting point if you need the larger boot with the rear seats in place. The Kia Stonic has a published maximum load volume with its rear seats folded, but the available specifications do not establish a universal winner for equipment, fuel use or total running cost.

Prices, trim contents, insurance groups and offers change, so compare the exact engine, gearbox and trim on the day you buy. The figures below are manufacturer-published specifications rather than an independent test, and they describe current listings rather than every model year sold under these names.

What the current UK data says

The two cars occupy a similar small-crossover role, but they make different claims on paper. Hyundai’s current UK Bayon pages emphasise passenger measurements and a larger luggage compartment with the rear seats upright. Kia’s Stonic specification page gives both upright and folded-seat luggage figures, plus service, warranty, insurance and laboratory fuel-consumption information for individual configurations.

That makes the buying decision depend on what you value most. A family that normally carries bags behind the second row should begin with the Bayon. Someone choosing on warranty length, a particular Stonic trim or a specific dealer quotation needs to compare the complete transaction rather than infer a winner from the badge or list price.

These figures should be read as a time-stamped UK snapshot. Hyundai Motor UK’s revised-Bayon announcement was issued in December 2025, while Kia’s online prices and specifications can change with stock, registration year and promotions. Save the specification sheet and quotation for the exact car you are considering.

Space and practicality

Luggage capacity

Measure Hyundai Bayon Kia Stonic How to use it
Boot with rear seats upright 411 litres 352 litres The Bayon has a 59-litre published advantage in the normal five-seat layout.
Maximum published luggage volume with rear seats folded Not stated on the cited current Hyundai pages 1,155 litres Do not treat the two maximum figures as a complete comparison when one manufacturer has not supplied the equivalent number in the material available here.
Front legroom 1,072 mm Not stated in the cited Kia specification Useful for checking driver and front-passenger space, but not a complete measure of cabin comfort.
Rear legroom 882 mm Not stated in the cited Kia specification Child-seat and adult fit still depend on seat position and the shape of the seat cushion.
Headroom 993 mm front; 977 mm rear Not stated; Stonic height varies by trim Check the exact roof and seat specification if tall occupants or a high seating position matter.
Body dimensions published in the cited material Not used here as a like-for-like exterior comparison 4,165 mm long; 1,760 mm wide; height varies by trim Overall length and width do not tell you the boot opening width or the usable floor shape.

The 59-litre difference is a manufacturer capacity comparison, not a promise that 59 litres of any particular luggage will fit. A litre measurement can include irregular spaces that are difficult to use, and it says nothing about the opening or loading sill. The Stonic’s 1,155-litre folded-seat figure is useful when you regularly carry long or bulky items, but the Bayon’s equivalent folded figure is not stated on the current Hyundai pages cited here.

These are manufacturer specifications. They do not show whether a particular pram, suitcase, dog crate or set of child seats will fit. Before ordering, measure the items you actually carry and inspect the cars together.

What to check at a dealer

  • Open the tailgate with the vehicle parked where you normally load it. The published litre figures do not describe the aperture height, sill height or the distance between the wheel arches.
  • Put your largest suitcase or pushchair into the Bayon and Stonic, rather than relying on litres alone.
  • Install your child seats in the positions you use. Front-seat travel is affected by the rear-facing seat’s length and the front passenger’s preferred position.
  • Fold and raise the rear seatbacks yourself. The cited pages do not compare the split arrangement, floor flatness or whether a step remains between the boot and folded seats.
  • Check the spare-wheel or repair-kit arrangement, under-floor storage and the space needed for charging cables or other equipment; these details are not established by the listed figures.
  • Measure access for bicycles, flat-pack furniture or work equipment if those are regular loads. A larger quoted volume does not necessarily mean a wider or squarer aperture.

Features, trims and what you get for the money

Hyundai’s current UK price page lists two Bayon trims. Kia’s UK Stonic page lists Pure, GT-Line and GT-Line S configurations. Names alone are not an equipment comparison: a trim can change with the model year, engine, gearbox or an option package.

The Hyundai prices are starting figures, not a guarantee of the amount payable for a particular colour, transmission, option or finance contract. Kia’s current price page gives on-the-road figures by trim and gearbox, but the exact Stonic amount needs to be retrieved for the vehicle you are considering.

For a fair value comparison, price the features you would otherwise add later. For example, a factory-fitted parking system, heated seats or a premium audio system may be worth more to you than a cosmetic package. Conversely, do not pay for a higher trim solely for equipment you will not use. Confirm whether a listed feature is standard on the exact stock vehicle, because manufacturers often show a model-level feature that is limited to one version.

How to compare equivalent equipment

  1. Choose the engine and gearbox first. A cheaper manual car and a more expensive dual-clutch car are not equivalent purchase propositions.
  2. List the safety, parking and driver-assistance equipment you actually need. Confirm whether each item is standard, optional or unavailable on the exact stock number.
  3. Compare the screen, navigation and phone-connectivity arrangements in the car, not only the brochure description. Check whether the system you want is built in or depends on a connected phone.
  4. Ask for the written vehicle specification and the final on-the-road price. Keep dealer-installed accessories and administration charges separate from the manufacturer list price.
  5. Compare the total finance payable as well as the monthly instalment. A low monthly figure can reflect a larger deposit, a final balloon payment or a longer term.

Engines and transmissions

Model Engine information published Gearboxes published What is not established
Hyundai Bayon 1.0-litre T-GDi, 90PS, in Hyundai Motor UK’s December 2025 revised-Bayon announcement Six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission No independent acceleration, refinement, towing or real-world economy result is established here.
Kia Stonic 1.0 T-GDi versions including 98bhp configurations Manual and dual-clutch configurations are listed, with pairing dependent on trim The available material does not provide a complete trim-by-trim engine and gearbox table or an independent performance comparison.

The quoted outputs use different units—90PS for the Bayon announcement and 98bhp for the Stonic listing—so they should not be presented as a controlled power comparison. Even a small published output difference would not establish which car feels quicker in every gear, because gearing, kerb weight, tyre choice and transmission calibration also matter.

Arrange a back-to-back drive in the exact cars you would buy. Test low-speed clutch or transmission behaviour, merging onto a faster road, reversing into a space and the visibility you need in daily use. Do not assume that two 1.0-litre turbocharged cars will have identical responses.

Running costs: what is known and what you still need to price

Published ownership information

Cost area Bayon Stonic Interpretation
Routine service interval Not stated in the cited material 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes sooner Use the exact service schedule and dealer labour price for the car you select.
Manufacturer warranty A directly comparable term is not established in the cited material 7 years or 100,000 miles, according to Kia’s UK price guide Read the exclusions, transfer rules, maintenance conditions and commercial-use limits before valuing the difference.
Insurance Exact group not stated in the cited material Groups are published for some configurations; other trim groups are shown as to be confirmed Your premium depends on driver, address, annual mileage, security and the exact registration, not only the group.
Fuel consumption An exact figure is not stated in the available material Kia publishes WLTP values by test phase for individual specifications WLTP is a laboratory comparison method, not a guaranteed household fuel bill.
Tax, tyres and repairs Buyer-specific figures not stated Buyer-specific figures not stated Obtain current quotes for the exact wheel, tyre, engine and registration configuration.

Kia explicitly warns that its laboratory MPG figures may not match results in real driving. Traffic, temperature, speed, passengers, tyre pressures and use of heating or air conditioning can all move consumption away from the test result. There is no substantiated like-for-like real-world fuel-economy test in the available evidence, so it would be misleading to declare either car cheaper to run on fuel.

The Kia warranty is stated as seven years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, in its UK price guide. Check what is covered, which parts have shorter limits, whether the warranty transfers to a subsequent owner and what maintenance records are required. Do not assume a headline warranty period automatically means every repair is covered for that entire time.

Build a like-for-like ownership calculation

  1. Set one ownership period, such as three or four years, and one annual mileage. Do not compare a cash price for one car with a finance payment for the other.
  2. Record the negotiated on-the-road price or the total amount payable under finance, including deposit, interest, fees and any final payment.
  3. Request an insurance quotation using the exact registration or vehicle details and the real driver profile. A published insurance group is only an input to that quote.
  4. Price scheduled servicing at the intervals required by each manufacturer. Include inspection items and consumables that are not covered by a service plan.
  5. Use a realistic fuel assumption. Treat WLTP as a comparison baseline and run a second calculation using your own expected consumption and local petrol price.
  6. Add tyres, road tax where applicable, breakdown cover, parking or charging-related costs, and a reserve for non-warranty repairs.
  7. Subtract any guaranteed future value only if the contract specifies it and you understand mileage, condition and return charges.

This method can produce a personal answer even when the published specifications cannot. It also exposes whether a higher purchase price is offset by finance terms, insurance, servicing or the way you drive.

A Hyundai page for an “All-new BAYON” describes a projected 440-litre boot and says technical data is pending final homologation. Keep that provisional material separate from the current UK Bayon pages, which state 411 litres. A projected figure is not a confirmed specification for a car already available to order.

A practical test-drive and quote checklist

  • Write down the full model description, engine, gearbox, trim and registration year for both cars.
  • Check the final on-the-road price, delivery timing, paint and option charges, and whether the advertised figure is cash or finance-dependent.
  • Obtain a written finance illustration showing deposit, term, annual mileage, interest rate, total amount payable and final payment.
  • Run insurance quotes before committing; do not substitute a generic comparison based on the model name.
  • Load your normal luggage and test the rear seats with the people or child seats who will use them.
  • Confirm the service schedule, roadside assistance, warranty exclusions and the location and cost of authorised servicing.
  • Drive both cars on the same route, including a cold start, urban manoeuvres, a faster road and parking.
  • Save the specification sheet and quotation. If the vehicle is delivered with different equipment, you have a record of what was agreed.

Bottom line for a UK buyer

Choose the Bayon as the first car to investigate when rear-seat-up luggage capacity is your decisive requirement. Choose the Stonic when its exact trim, gearbox, warranty terms or dealer quotation better fit your priorities. Neither the available equipment lists nor the published laboratory data prove a universal value or running-cost winner. The defensible choice comes from comparing two identically specified, currently priced cars and testing them with your own passengers, luggage and driving pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Kia Stonic have a longer warranty?

Kia’s UK price guide states a seven-year or 100,000-mile manufacturer warranty, subject to its conditions. A directly comparable Hyundai term is not established here, so check both warranty documents rather than relying on the headline period alone.

What are the Kia Stonic service intervals?

Kia lists servicing at 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes sooner. Confirm the schedule and local labour price for the engine, gearbox and model year you intend to buy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Both model lines are listed with dual-clutch transmission configurations, but the available pairing depends on engine and trim. Confirm the gearbox on the specific stock vehicle and test it in traffic and while parking.

Is the 440-litre Bayon boot figure current?

No. A Hyundai page describing an “All-new BAYON” gives a projected 440-litre figure and says technical data is pending final homologation. Current UK Bayon pages cited here state 411 litres, so verify the model year and final specification.

The Bottom Line

The Bayon leads on published boot space with the seats up; the Stonic offers a stated 1,155-litre folded-seat volume and a seven-year/100,000-mile warranty. Compare exact trims, prices, finance, insurance, servicing and real-world fuel use before choosing.
