The short answer: which one suits which buyer?
The Bayon is Hyundai’s smaller B-SUV choice. At 4,245 mm long and 1,810 mm wide, it is easier to place in narrow streets, compact parking bays and crowded residential areas. Its 2,600 mm wheelbase keeps the overall car relatively short, and its available 1.0 T-GDI engines are aimed at uncomplicated everyday use.

The Kona moves up in physical size and model breadth. The 2025 specification sheet lists a 4,350 mm length, 1,825 mm width and 2,660 mm wheelbase. That extra metal is used for a roomier second row and a larger published luggage area. Depending on country, the Kona can also be ordered with a 100 PS petrol engine, a 138 PS 1.6 turbo petrol, a 129 PS hybrid or an electric powertrain.

In practical terms, the choice is a trade-off rather than a ranking:
- Buy Bayon for the smaller exterior, straightforward city use and a lower step in Hyundai’s small-SUV range.
- Buy Kona for passengers who will use the rear seats often, frequent luggage carrying, more output, a hybrid or electric option, and advanced assistance features on upper trims.
- Check locally for price, availability and standard equipment. A Bayon or Kona nameplate does not guarantee the same engine or safety kit in every market.
Exterior dimensions and parking: how much smaller is the Bayon?
| Measure | Hyundai Bayon | Hyundai Kona | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 4,245 mm | 4,350 mm (2025 sheet) | The Bayon is 105 mm shorter, useful when parallel parking or manoeuvring in short bays. |
| Width | 1,810 mm | 1,825 mm (2025 sheet) | The 15 mm difference is modest, but the Bayon gives slightly more margin in tight lanes and garages. |
| Wheelbase | 2,600 mm | 2,660 mm (2025 sheet) | The Kona’s 60 mm longer wheelbase helps create more interior room and steadier proportions at speed. |
Those figures answer the common “which is smaller?” question directly: the Bayon is smaller in every cited exterior dimension. The difference is meaningful in urban use, but it does not make the Kona a large SUV. Both remain small crossovers; the Kona simply occupies more road and parking space.
What the numbers do not tell you
Published length and width do not establish turning circle, mirror-to-mirror width, ground clearance or the exact space required with a tailgate open. Those details can vary by wheel and trim. If your garage or usual car park is especially tight, measure the actual opening and ask the dealer for the local specification rather than relying on the body-width number alone.
Cabin room and boot capacity
The Kona’s longer wheelbase is intended to provide more second-row space, and Hyundai describes the model as wider and longer with increased rear-seat room. That makes it the safer choice for adults who regularly sit in the back or for families carrying child seats alongside luggage.
Boot figures need more care because Hyundai’s published Bayon numbers refer to different generations or powertrains:

| Vehicle and specification | Seats-up luggage figure | Seats-folded figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bayon, cited existing trim page | 411 L | Not stated | Applies to the specific trim page, not automatically to every Bayon. |
| All-new Bayon, ICE version in 2026 technical material | 440 L | Not stated | Generation and market must be confirmed before comparing with an older car. |
| All-new Bayon, hybrid figure in 2026 technical material | 397 L | Not stated | Powertrain packaging reduces the stated capacity; availability is future and market dependent. |
| Kona, 2025 technical sheet | 466 L | 1,300 L | Published seats-up and seats-folded capacities for that specification. |
On the clearest like-for-like published figure, the Kona offers 466 L with the rear seats in place, versus 411 L on the cited existing Bayon trim page: a 55-litre difference. The all-new Bayon ICE figure of 440 L narrows the gap to 26 L, while the stated 397 L hybrid figure reverses some of that advantage. Do not combine a 411-litre older Bayon figure with a 2026 all-new Bayon or a hybrid without labelling the generation and powertrain.
Which boot is better for real use?
- Weekly shopping and city errands: either model should be adequate, and the Bayon’s shorter body can be more convenient around town.
- Prams, suitcases or sports equipment: the Kona’s 466 L seats-up figure and 1,300 L seats-folded figure give it the stronger published case.
- Hybrid Bayon buyers: verify the local boot layout. The 397 L figure in the 2026 technical material is lower than the all-new ICE figure.
Ask to see the luggage floor with the rear seats upright and folded. A nominal litre advantage does not show whether the floor is flat, how wide the opening is or where charging cables and parcel shelves are stored.

Bayon: two 1.0 T-GDI petrol outputs today
Bayon technical data lists 1.0 T-GDI petrol engines rated at 90 PS and 115 PS. Those outputs suit buyers who want a compact crossover for commuting, school runs and normal motorway travel without moving to a larger engine. Exact transmissions, fuel-consumption figures and trim availability are market-specific and are not established by the figures above, so request the local data sheet.
Hyundai’s all-new Bayon launch material says a 138 PS hybrid is planned for 2027. “Planned” is important: the powertrain remains subject to homologation, production timing and local ordering. Do not pay a deposit on the assumption that the hybrid will be available in your country or in a particular trim until a local configurator or dealer confirms it.
Kona: petrol, hybrid and electric choices
The 2025 technical sheet lists three non-electric outputs: 100 PS petrol, 138 PS 1.6 turbo petrol and 129 PS hybrid. Hyundai also markets an electric Kona in Europe. Availability, battery specification, charging equipment, tax treatment and delivery timing depend on country and model year.

|---|---|---|---|
| Entry petrol | 1.0 T-GDI, 90 PS | 100 PS petrol | Urban and general-purpose driving where purchase simplicity matters. |
| Higher-output petrol | 1.0 T-GDI, 115 PS | 138 PS 1.6 turbo petrol | Drivers who carry passengers, use motorways or want more acceleration reserve. |
| Hybrid | 138 PS planned for 2027 all-new range; market dependent | 129 PS hybrid listed in the 2025 sheet | Buyers seeking electrification now should check Kona availability; Bayon timing is not yet universal. |
| Electric | Not stated in the cited Bayon data | Electric variant marketed in Europe | Drivers able to charge at home or work and whose market stocks the electric Kona. |
Is the Kona worth choosing for the hybrid?
If you want a Hyundai small SUV hybrid now, the Kona has the clearer documented route because the 129 PS hybrid appears in the 2025 technical sheet. The Bayon’s 138 PS hybrid is a future all-new-range plan, not a guarantee of current retail availability. Compare the actual delivery date, warranty terms, boot capacity and local tax or incentive rules, rather than choosing solely from the PS number.

Safety and technology: trim level matters more than the badge
Bayon equipment listings include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Lane Following Assist (LFA) and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA). Navigation and wireless phone charging are also listed by trim. That wording means the equipment cannot be assumed to be standard on every Bayon sold in every country.
Higher Kona trims add a broader set of assistance and camera functions, including Highway Driving Assist (HDA), Smart Cruise Control (SCC), blind-view monitoring and surround-view monitoring. The Kona comparison is therefore not simply “basic versus advanced”: a well-equipped Bayon may include useful active-safety functions, while the Kona’s upper grades can add motorway assistance and a more complete camera view.
| Feature cited in Hyundai equipment information | Bayon | Kona | How to evaluate it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forward collision assistance | FCA listed | FCA listed in Kona equipment information | Confirm whether it is standard or optional on the exact local grade. |
| Lane-centering or lane-following assistance | LFA listed | HDA on higher trims | Ask whether the system only follows a lane or also assists with motorway speed and steering. |
| Adaptive cruise | Not established in the cited Bayon information | SCC on higher trims | Check the trim sheet; ordinary cruise control is not the same as adaptive cruise. |
| Blind-area camera view | Not stated | Blind-view and surround-view monitoring on upper trims | Useful in multi-storey car parks, but not necessarily included in entry versions. |
| Navigation and wireless charging | Available by trim | Exact local fit not stated | Inspect the standard-equipment list rather than assuming a larger model has every feature. |
When comparing quotations, request the complete equipment list and identify each driver-assistance system by its name. “Safety pack” or “technology pack” is too vague to establish whether HDA, SCC, blind-view or surround-view monitoring is included.
Price: why there is no single Bayon-versus-Kona answer
Hyundai pricing is country-specific and can change with tax, registration charges, promotions, finance conditions, trim and model year. A Hyundai Ireland retail listing displayed €24,645 or €202.66 per month at the time of the cited page. That is a market-specific listing, not a Europe-wide recommended retail price; the monthly figure’s total cost and contract terms must be checked separately.

- Easy to Install: Car side seat gap filler is easy to install, simply insert it into the gap between the seat and the center console, gap seat filler for car can fit tightly without affecting the normal adjustment of the seat and the use of the seat belt

Use price as a final comparison after matching the following variables:
- the same country and currency;
- the same model year and generation;
- the same fuel type and output;
- equivalent safety, camera, navigation and charging equipment;
- cash price versus the complete finance amount, including any deposit, interest, fees, mileage limit and optional final payment.
If a dealer quotes an older Bayon beside a new-generation Kona, ask for the production year and the exact stock or order specification. A lower advertised price can reflect an outgoing model, a less powerful engine, fewer driver-assistance features or a finance promotion rather than a like-for-like saving.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make the comparison at a dealer
- Record the identity of both cars. Write down model year, generation, trim, engine output and whether the vehicle is petrol, hybrid or electric.
- Measure your constraints. Check garage width, parking-bay length, child-seat access and the height available for a tailgate. The Bayon’s 4,245 mm length is the useful starting point for a tight space; the Kona is 4,350 mm.
- Load your real luggage. Put a pram, cabin suitcase or weekly shopping boxes in each boot. Ask to see the seats-up and seats-folded positions.
- Sit in every seat. Have the tallest regular passenger sit behind the driver, then check knee room, door opening and access with a child seat fitted.
- Test the powertrain you will actually buy. A 90 PS Bayon, 115 PS Bayon, 100 PS Kona, 138 PS turbo Kona and 129 PS hybrid Kona are different propositions. Do not test one output and order another without checking its local specification.
- Audit the technology list. Confirm FCA, LFA, ISLA, HDA, SCC, blind-view and surround-view functions by exact trim. Ask which features are standard, optional or unavailable.
- Request a written, same-day quote. It should show vehicle price, options, delivery or registration charges, finance deposit, interest, total payable and the quote’s expiry date.
- Check delivery certainty. For the planned Bayon hybrid, obtain written confirmation that the vehicle is orderable in your market; a launch plan is not a delivery promise.
Common mistakes when comparing the two SUVs
Mixing Bayon generations
The 411 L figure belongs to a cited existing trim page, while 440 L and 397 L appear in 2026 all-new Bayon technical material for ICE and hybrid configurations. Presenting them as one universal Bayon boot size creates a false comparison.
Treating a planned hybrid as a current model
The 138 PS Bayon hybrid is described as planned for 2027. Until Hyundai confirms local homologation and ordering, use the currently listed Kona hybrid as the more definite electrified option in this comparison.

Assuming every safety feature is standard
Both Hyundai model lines distribute equipment by trim. A base Kona may not have the same camera or motorway-assistance hardware as an upper trim, and a Bayon listing that mentions FCA, LFA or ISLA does not prove that every grade includes all three.

Using an Irish price as a European benchmark
The €24,645 listing and €202.66 monthly figure are tied to Hyundai Ireland and can change. They should not be presented as a price for Germany, France, the United Kingdom or Europe as a whole.
Choosing by horsepower alone
Output is only one part of ownership. Boot volume, rear-seat space, charging access, annual tax, insurance, delivery timing and the equipment included at the quoted price can change which car is better value for your use.
Decision guide by driving pattern
| Your priority | More logical starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Tight streets, short parking bays and predominantly urban trips | Bayon | Its 4,245 mm length and 1,810 mm width reduce the physical footprint. |
| Adults in the rear or frequent family luggage | Kona | The longer 2,660 mm wheelbase and 466 L published seats-up boot favour passenger and cargo space. |
| Hybrid purchase needed now | Kona, subject to local stock | The 129 PS hybrid is listed in the 2025 technical sheet; the Bayon hybrid is planned for 2027. |
| Electric driving | Kona, where sold | An electric Kona is marketed in Europe; no electric Bayon is established in the cited data. |
| Motorway assistance and camera coverage | Higher-trim Kona | HDA, SCC, blind-view and surround-view monitoring are cited for upper Kona grades. |
| Lowest physical footprint within Hyundai’s small-SUV range | Bayon | It is shorter, narrower and has a shorter wheelbase than the cited Kona. |
Final buying verdict
The Hyundai Bayon is the sensible choice when the decisive requirement is compactness. Its 105 mm shorter body, 15 mm narrower width and 60 mm shorter wheelbase can make daily parking less stressful, while the 90 PS and 115 PS 1.0 T-GDI engines cover the straightforward petrol end of the range.
The Hyundai Kona earns its higher position when space and choice matter more than minimum dimensions. Its 466 L published boot, longer wheelbase, 138 PS turbo petrol, 129 PS hybrid and European electric version give it a broader brief. Upper trims also offer HDA, SCC, blind-view and surround-view monitoring that are not established for the Bayon.
Before signing, compare the exact local cars—not just the model names. Confirm generation, engine, boot specification, trim equipment, total finance cost and delivery date. That process will tell you whether the Kona’s extra size and equipment justify its local price, or whether the Bayon’s smaller footprint is the feature you will appreciate every day.
