The Hyundai Bayon is the better fit if you want a compact, city-friendly crossover and are prepared to confirm the all-new model’s final local specification, price and delivery date. The Hyundai Kona is the safer choice if you want a currently listed choice of petrol, hybrid and electric powertrains, a cabin Hyundai positions as roomier in the second row, or a published UK price list. There is no universal winner. Country, trim, powertrain, budget and delivery timing change the answer.
This comparison uses Hyundai’s European information for the all-new Bayon introduced in October 2026 and the current European and UK Kona information available at the same time. Bayon launch figures remain preliminary where Hyundai says homologation is still pending.

At a glance: Bayon or Kona?
- Pick the Bayon if its smaller-crossover character, design and footprint suit your daily driving, and you can wait for your market’s confirmed 2026 specification.
- Pick the Kona if you want the broadest confirmed powertrain choice, including Kona Electric in Europe, or need to price a car from an already published local list.
- Do not choose on boot size alone. Hyundai projects 440 litres for internal-combustion versions of the new Bayon and lists 397 litres for its hybrid, but the Kona overview used for this comparison does not provide a directly comparable current-generation luggage figure.
- Do not treat the old UK Bayon price sheet as current. The available April 2026 document predates the all-new Bayon’s October launch.
The most important distinction is timing. The new Bayon is a fresh European launch with preliminary specifications that can vary by market. The Kona is already presented by Hyundai Europe in petrol, hybrid and electric forms, with a current UK price list effective 1 October 2026.

Hyundai introduced the all-new Bayon in Europe in October 2026. The company describes it as more than a visual update, with a stronger SUV design, improved passenger comfort, more digital equipment and technology normally associated with larger vehicles. Equipment and specifications can vary by version and country.

Xavier Martinet, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Europe, said: “The all-new BAYON is much more than an update. We have strengthened its SUV character with a bolder design, more space, more comfort and technologies that customers would normally expect from larger vehicles. In one of Europe’s most important segments, BAYON gives us a stronger opportunity to attract new customers. With a hybrid powertrain joining the lineup in 2027, BAYON will build on this momentum.”
That statement matters to buyers comparing it with the Kona: the Bayon’s range is still being rolled out, while the Kona’s European powertrain and trim information is already established. Hyundai says final Bayon energy-consumption and performance figures are subject to homologation, so figures quoted at launch should not be treated as final real-world results.
Dimensions, manoeuvrability and the “which is bigger?” question
Hyundai gives the new Bayon a length of 4,245 mm, a width of 1,810 mm and a 2,600 mm wheelbase. Its height is listed as 1,565 to 1,570 mm for internal-combustion versions, depending on wheel and roof-rail configuration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Those dimensions place the Bayon firmly in the compact-crossover category. A 4.245-metre body should be easier to place in tight urban streets, smaller parking bays and older multi-storey car parks than a larger SUV, although mirror width, turning circle and camera equipment still matter in practice. Ask the dealer for the exact turning circle and equipped width of the version you intend to buy if your parking space is narrow.
Hyundai’s Kona overview emphasises increased cabin room compared with the previous generation and a more spacious second row, but the extracted European information does not provide a matching current-generation dimension table. That means a numerical “which is bigger, the Bayon or Kona?” answer cannot be made responsibly from these figures alone. The Kona may feel roomier in the back, but that is a positioning claim, not a substitute for same-generation measurements.
When comparing cars in person, measure the access points that affect your routine:
- Can the driver open the door fully beside your usual parking-wall or neighbouring-car clearance?
- Can a rear-facing child seat be fitted without forcing the front passenger seat too far forward?
- Does the tailgate clear your garage or low car-park roof?
- Can you see the corners of the car without relying entirely on sensors and cameras?
Rear-seat space and luggage capacity
Hyundai positions the new Bayon as more comfortable and more spacious than before. Its published luggage figures are manufacturer figures: 440 litres is a projection for internal-combustion versions, while a detailed Bayon table lists 397 litres for the hybrid. Hyundai does not present the 440-litre number as a confirmed figure for every version.

The Kona’s European overview highlights increased cabin room, particularly for passengers, but it does not give an equivalent current-generation boot number in the material used here. Older Bayon-versus-Kona figures should not be mixed with the all-new Bayon because generation changes can alter body dimensions, rear-seat packaging and under-floor storage.
For a family decision, test both vehicles with the equipment you actually carry. A nominal litre figure cannot show whether a pushchair fits upright, whether the loading lip is awkward, or how much space remains when a parcel shelf is installed. Check:
- child-seat installation access and front-seat legroom;
- the width and shape of the boot opening;
- the height of the loading floor;
- rear-seat split-fold arrangements;
- where charging cables are stored on an electric or hybrid version.
Until Hyundai publishes directly comparable, same-generation figures for both cars in your market, the practical verdict is to inspect and load them rather than declare one the larger family vehicle.
Powertrains: petrol, hybrid and electric
The biggest mechanical difference is availability. Hyundai’s launch information gives the Bayon petrol engines at introduction and says a hybrid will follow. Hyundai Europe’s Kona pages list petrol, hybrid and electric versions now.
| Model and version | Output or range information | Transmission or charging detail | What is confirmed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bayon 1.0 T-GDI petrol | 90 PS | Six-speed manual | Listed for the all-new European Bayon at launch; final market equipment remains subject to local specification. |
| Bayon 1.0 T-GDI petrol | 115 PS | Six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission | Listed for the all-new European Bayon at launch. |
| Bayon 1.6 hybrid | 138 PS | Six-speed dual-clutch transmission | Planned for a later stage, with Hyundai referring to a 2027 arrival; final performance, consumption and emissions remain subject to homologation. |
| Kona petrol | Exact output depends on market and trim | Hyundai Europe lists petrol versions; consult the local specification | Currently listed in Hyundai Europe’s Kona range. |
| Kona hybrid | Exact output depends on market and trim | Hybrid system details depend on the local version | Currently listed in Hyundai Europe’s Kona range. |
| Kona Electric | Up to 514 km on one charge, as advertised on Hyundai Europe’s trims page | Requires access to suitable charging; exact battery, trim and local WLTP range must be confirmed | Electric version is currently listed in Europe; the 514-km figure is a maximum advertised value, not a promise for every configuration. |
Choose Bayon petrol when simplicity and availability matter
The 90 PS and 115 PS 1.0 T-GDI versions give Bayon buyers a straightforward petrol choice. The 115 PS model is the one to investigate if you regularly carry passengers, use motorways or prefer the option of a dual-clutch gearbox. Hyundai lists front-wheel drive for the Bayon launch range.
Do not compare the provisional Bayon outputs with a Kona specification from another country and assume the equipment, gearbox or emissions rating will match. Engine availability, taxation and transmission combinations can change by market.
Choose the Bayon hybrid only if you can wait for the rollout
The planned 138 PS 1.6 hybrid broadens the Bayon’s appeal for urban drivers who want petrol flexibility with electrified assistance. It is not an immediately available launch substitute for the Kona hybrid: Hyundai says the Bayon hybrid joins at a later stage, with a 2027 timeframe referenced in the launch statement. Confirm ordering and delivery dates rather than relying on a general model-year announcement.

Choose Kona Electric when home or workplace charging fits your routine
Kona Electric is the only explicitly listed full-electric option in this comparison. Hyundai Europe advertises up to 514 km on one charge, but the usable range for a particular car depends on battery, wheel, trim, weather, speed and driving conditions. Ask for the exact WLTP value and battery size on the vehicle you are buying, then check whether you can charge at home, at work or on dependable public routes.

The all-new Bayon announcement highlights digital features, driver-assistance technology and comfort improvements, but Hyundai states that features vary by version and market. A base car in one country may not carry the same screen, camera, safety or connectivity equipment as a similarly named trim elsewhere.
The Kona overview also highlights driver-assistance systems, over-the-air software updates and a more spacious cabin. OTA capability can reduce visits for certain software updates, but it does not make every feature standard on every trim. Read the local equipment list line by line.
Before signing an order, confirm these items on the exact vehicle identification or build sheet:
- adaptive or conventional cruise control;
- front and rear parking sensors and the type of camera view;
- blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts;
- phone integration and the number of USB charging ports;
- navigation, connected services and whether subscriptions apply;
- heated seats, heated steering wheel and climate-control configuration;
- the wheel and tyre size, because it can affect ride comfort, efficiency and the advertised range of an electric car.
Prices and availability: what UK buyers can actually compare
Hyundai Motor UK’s Kona on-the-road price list effective 1 October 2026 starts at £25,950 for petrol and £30,270 for hybrid. These are UK list prices, not Europe-wide prices, and they apply to the trims and specifications in that document.

| UK figure | Published value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Kona petrol starting on-the-road price | £25,950 | Hyundai Motor UK list effective 1 October 2026. |
| Kona hybrid starting on-the-road price | £30,270 | Hyundai Motor UK list effective 1 October 2026. |
| All-new Bayon UK price | Not stated in the current launch information | The April 2026 UK Bayon PDF predates the October 2026 all-new model and should not be used as its current price list. |
That leaves UK shoppers without a valid same-generation Bayon-versus-Kona price comparison in the available material. Do not infer that the Bayon is cheaper simply because it is positioned as the more compact vehicle. Obtain a written quote for the all-new Bayon in the same country, then compare like for like:
- Choose the same fuel type where possible.
- Match transmission and safety equipment.
- Include paint, delivery, registration and any mandatory fees.
- Compare the cash on-the-road total, not a monthly payment with a different deposit or term.
- Check whether the quoted car is physically available, factory allocated or subject to an unconfirmed delivery date.
In other European countries, taxes, incentives, registration charges and trim names can make a UK price irrelevant. Use the local Hyundai importer’s price list and ask when the all-new Bayon can actually be delivered.

Warranty, insurance and ownership costs
Hyundai Europe’s Kona trims page advertises a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty. Treat that as a European headline claim and verify the warranty document that applies in your country, including exclusions, servicing requirements and any separate battery coverage for Kona Electric.
The available UK Kona specification document lists insurance groups by trim and warns that WLTP consumption figures may not reflect real-world results. An insurance group is not your personal premium: age, address, driving history, annual mileage, security and insurer pricing all affect what you pay.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Is the Hyundai Kona worth the extra money?
That question cannot be answered until the all-new Bayon’s local price is published. The Kona’s UK starting prices show the cost of entering its petrol or hybrid range, but they do not establish how much more a similarly equipped Bayon will cost.
The Kona may justify a higher quote for a buyer who values a choice of electric, hybrid and petrol powertrains, wants Hyundai’s stated emphasis on second-row room, or needs a car that can be ordered from an already documented local range. It may not justify the difference for a driver who mainly makes short urban trips, prefers the Bayon’s dimensions and does not need electric capability or additional rear-seat space.
Compare total usefulness rather than the badge or monthly payment. A cheaper car that needs an inconvenient powertrain compromise, cannot fit your child seats or arrives months later may be poor value; a more expensive car that solves those problems may be the rational purchase.

Which Hyundai small SUV is best for a family?
Start with access and packaging, not the catalogue litre figure. The Bayon’s projected 440-litre ICE boot may suit a family, but the Kona’s published overview stresses rear-passenger room and does not supply a matching boot number. Families should physically test both with child seats, a folded pushchair and the luggage they normally carry.

The Kona becomes the stronger candidate if you want the option of an electric powertrain, need the current hybrid choice, or regularly use the second row with adult passengers. The Bayon deserves consideration if its compact exterior makes school runs, street parking and narrow garages easier and its confirmed local trim supplies the safety and comfort equipment you need.
A buying checklist for either model
- Identify the market. Use the price, warranty and equipment documents for the country where the vehicle will be registered.
- Confirm generation and build date. Do not use an earlier Bayon price sheet to represent the all-new 2026 model.
- Choose the powertrain around your driving. Consider annual mileage, motorway use, urban trips, charging access and local taxes.
- Check the exact trim equipment. Model names do not guarantee identical features across countries.
- Measure the practical fit. Test child seats, rear legroom, boot loading and your regular parking space.
- Ask for final figures. For Bayon, confirm homologated consumption, emissions, performance, price and delivery; for Kona Electric, confirm battery, trim and local range.
- Compare written on-the-road quotes. Include all fees and use the same assumptions for deposit, finance and servicing.
- Read the warranty and insurance terms. Verify the documents that apply to your registration country rather than relying on a pan-European headline.
Decision guide by buyer type
City driver who wants the smallest-feeling Hyundai crossover
The Bayon is the logical first test drive. Its 4,245 mm length and compact-crossover positioning may make daily manoeuvring easier. Wait for the local launch specification before deciding that it is cheaper or better equipped.
Driver who wants maximum powertrain choice
The Kona has the advantage in the currently listed European range because it is offered with petrol, hybrid and electric versions. The Bayon launches with petrol engines and adds its 138 PS hybrid later.
Electric-car shopper
Start with Kona Electric. It is the explicitly listed EV here, with Hyundai advertising up to 514 km on one charge depending on configuration. Confirm the exact range and charging arrangements for the car you can buy.
Family that carries adults in the back
Give the Kona a close inspection because Hyundai specifically highlights increased second-row room. Still test both cars with your own passengers and child seats; the available figures do not support a definitive numerical winner.
UK buyer focused on a firm price today
The Kona is easier to budget from the published UK list: £25,950 for petrol or £30,270 for hybrid at the stated starting points. Obtain a current all-new Bayon quote before treating it as a cheaper alternative.
Verdict
Choose the Bayon when its compact dimensions and new SUV design fit your daily use, and you are comfortable checking final 2026 local details during the model’s rollout. Choose the Kona when powertrain choice, electric capability, published local pricing or Hyundai’s roomier-second-row positioning matters more. The correct comparison is a same-country, same-trim, same-powertrain quote backed by a physical test of the seats and boot—not an old Bayon price list or an unsupported claim about which vehicle is bigger.
